Exactly.

Dude has a dream job, he's not gonna step on anyone's toes as it pertains to the athletic department.

He is a people pleaser, he will kiss the ass of those who have more or equal access/knowledge to U of M sports, but will try and flex with those who don't.

There is a stark difference between 'unwilling', and 'not able to, in order to maintain my sources'. I get that it may not matter to us, but to a guy that makes his living in a realm where sources are crucial, I think Sam is just fine. Especially when it comes to a kid not even on the roster yet. If the kid was getting processed, it would be a pretty awful look for the program, to have an 'insider' breaking the news that a recruit was getting processed.

The recruiting cycle is weird…teams been playing lights out and seems not much positive news the past few weeks.  I know they had the DT commits but losing Eugenio leaves a big hole at edge in the class.  What’s the take on this one?

1. Probably takes more than beating a 1-2 Wisky team, a terrible Wash team, and Rutgers to get noticed.

2. Beat MSU OSU and PSU and people will be intrigued.

3. Do #2 a few times in a row, and we'll be recruiting at a new level.

I'm not complaining about the results, but to expect recruits to think... ah ha! Michigan is a perennial top 10 team because we beat the softest part of the schedule isn't realistic. OSU lost and is still ahead of us. There's a road back to relevancy and if we are on it, we're just getting started.

It wouldn't be MGoBlog if we fans didn't think everything is bad.

I mean, people forget this but there were fans loudly claiming they wanted to fire John Beilein even after they went to the national title game, and there will be people calling for Howard's head the minute the team has a down year.  It's the nature of the fanbase.

tesla,

guessing you need to go back to the garage and re-charge.   we are ranked in the top 10, play on national TV regularly, have a fairly highly ranked recruiting class despite this and, candidly, are looking pretty solid to get to 7-0.  we might not be 'bama or ohio, but come on, there aren't many schools that wouldn't change their level of 'relevancy' for ours in a heart beat.  very few.

Ok, clearly I was misinterpreted. I was just responding to the comment about why after winning our first five games, we didn't have a flood of amazing recruiting news. Recruiting is about relationships and that takes time. And I'm ecstatic that we're 5-0 and the games are enjoyable to watch, not a slog. I ONLY bright up the other points to say that recruiting doesn't just improve because you start 5-0 with all your goals ahead of you.

I'd be curious to know more context as to what lead to the change of heart.  It's hard to think our success, coaches, or development potential at his position would be reasons.

On the surface this seems bad, but i think it's the opposite and that higher rates guys on our board are coming...Sounds to me he is playing chicken with the Josephs decision, and is being prideful, as if, ok, I'm gonna decommit before i get slow played if I think he's coming.  Dax hill did same thing when he thought a coach was leaving.   And if hes not I'll re commit.

I think we might begin to see a few more de commits and upticks in recruits that are coming.  This staff is crushing it on the trail.

There's usually something weird when a player who seems fully committed jumps off the bandwagon.  Mario was not a waffler; by all previous accounts he seemed extremely excited to be part of the class.  Some reasons these things happen:

  • Player sours on coach/coaches through a bad experience (related to him or someone else)
  • Player sours on school/program (does not seem likely based on this season)
  • Player has trouble with grades
  • Player has off-field issue(s)
  • Coach/coaches sour on player's on-field performance

These may seem obvious, but they are far from the Aubrey Solomon/Dax Hill/Najee Harris roller coasters where an elite player seems genuinely unsure about where they want to go.

I hope Mario and his family are okay and wish him the best, wherever he lands.

I kind of get the feeling that the Kenneth Grant commitment (in combination with Mason Graham) took the spot away from his teammate Tawfiq Thomas and it didn't sit well with him. I remember Thomas was all set to commit to Michigan and then was probably told by the staff to hold off.

Hopefully this doesn't affect the Deone Walker recruitment, whom I seem to remember Eugenio was also close with.

Kenneth Grant, Tawfiq Thomas and Deon Walker are all 350 pound plus.  That is some major beef. I remember when Michigan as the first school to have an O-line [all over / average?]  300 pounds plus.   How have people gotten so big in such a short period of time?  Good luck running through an athletic 1700 pound D-line....

Wish him luck.  I assume we're going to see a lot more guys across the country move around as guys play more games and coaches/recruits see how their classes shake out.

none of us know why this happened.

M could be they have better options and downgraded him, Could be he has a better offer closer to home, could have family issues that are changing his mind.

good luck to him unless he plays against Michigan

This really just proves how pathetic the state of our current recruiting is:  we now have low, marginal four star players who don’t want to come here.
