Rod Allen's single greatest…

Rod Allen's single greatest moment is "second deck," and nothing will ever change my mind.

I want to add that most of…

I want to add that most of their classmates have been incredibly cautious. All my roommates and the few people I hang out with outside my house have limited their contact to a handful of people, have always worn masks and distanced, and only eat outdoors at restaurants. I would guess most of the cases are coming from 1) Greek Life and 2) idiots lining up to go to Jug (these groups are not mutually exclusive).

It is terrifying to think…

It is terrifying to think that Michigan is recruiting people who won't set foot on campus until two years after I graduate. And they all still look older than me.

I think we all get …

I think we all get (rightfully) excited about innovations in the modern passing game like RPOs and that Mike Leach stuff, but a lot of people miss on the same innovations in the run game. OSU killed us a couple years ago running inverted veer, and we had a lot of success running that arc read package with Shea.

I don't think the article is…

I don't think the article is trying to pitch it as "Harbaugh Bad," they're just reporting that Harbaugh knew of the allegations and met with Muhammad about them.

I took that class with Bacon…

I took that class with Bacon last year. Enjoyed it, but kind of regretting it because now I can't repeat it with Professor Beilein.

Bacon did take us to Ashley's though, so Beilein has a lot to live up to.

"What you need be concerned…

"What you need be concerned about is what's seated in the chamber now: a copper-jacketed, hollow-point, 120-grain hot street load of my own creation. So you need to think for a just a moment and ask yourself: 'What do I have to do before this man raise up his gun again?' "

In a show full of elite actors, he still manages to stand out.

The serial killer storyline…

The serial killer storyline in the last season of The Wire was sus but the newspaper stuff balanced it out well IMO.

On the flip side, could…

On the flip side, could there be anything more quintessentially Big Ten than a 13-10 conference championship game with miserable weather and awful field conditions? Feels like a great way to end the season to me!

I have a very cheap Wilson…

I have a very cheap Wilson set that I bought from Meijer a couple years ago. I'm not good enough to spend real money on a good set. Includes a driver that I don't use, a wood simply labeled as "Fairway Wood" which is surprisingly strong off the tee, a 4 Hybrid that I somehow lost, 5-9 Irons, a Gap Wedge, and a Putter. All Wilson Ultra. In the future I want to add another hybrid or two and a pitching wedge to fill the distances between my 9 Iron and Gap Wedge.

My advice for keeping golf affordable: book through Golf Now or other online booking sites. And instead of buying expensive boxes of brand new balls, pick up one of those tubs of 100 recycled golf balls to last a year or two. Unless you're really good, it won't make much of a difference in your game, and sometimes you'll find some interesting balls in the tub.

As with many other things in…

As with many other things in this administration, the cruelty was the point.

That first point is the…

That first point is the number one thing that Don Brown critics tend to miss. Yes, Ohio State hangs a lot of points on us, and we obviously need to get better, but they do the same thing to pretty much everyone, and it's all the more difficult to stop them when they spend the whole year preparing for The Game. Not an excuse, but a recognition that "fire Don Brown" isn't a real solution unless you can pluck one of the few (if any) better coordinators that exist.

If you point out that Don Brown consistently fields top ten defenses, the response is "but that's mostly against inferior competition!" as if every other elite defense isn't also playing against cupcakes for half the season.

It'll be interesting to see…

It'll be interesting to see how the dining halls work. During lunchtime at South Quad, there's usually a shoulder-to-shoulder line all the way to the front door, and almost every table is usually full. For social distancing to work, they'll probably have to use some sort of carry-out system, or add tables outside the dining hall itself.

EDIT: apparently they're doing reservations for dine-in, which is certainly, uh, a plan.

Parties are already a…

Parties are already a problem and will continue to be a problem throughout the fall semester. But let's not pretend it's just a case of "kids these days" not recognizing consequences. If you look at the people refusing to wear a mask at stores and restaurants, you'll see that the problem isn't a generational thing where only young people are shortsighted with the virus.

College kids are gonna party. There would have been the same issue if there was a pandemic in the 70s, 80s, or 90s.

Some of my thoughts as an…

Some of my thoughts as an econ undergrad at umich:

We're in very uncharted territory with just about everything right now. Modern economic theory is still very new, especially compared to other sciences, and this is the first time in modern economic history that we've experienced a shock like this. Future economists are gonna learn a lot from this era.

When we entered this crisis, interest rates were already at near-zero levels (I could go into why, but it basically boils down to political pressure and Powell being a hack). Because of this, the Fed couldn't turn to its more traditional expansionary tools and had to jump right into quantitative easing — basically buying financial assets and doing some other black-magic voodoo — whose long-term consequences are not very well understood because it's been fully employed only once.

In theory, QE should lead to higher inflation, but we don't really know to what extent. Some reasons why we're not seeing it right now could be that the current CPI basket doesn't accurately reflect costs of living, the massive deflation from the virus is too strong (probably this), or that it's just too early to see these effects. Our economy is also acting weird as fuck right now (see: the stock market somehow soaring, that last jobs report somehow being not as terrible as we thought), so who knows!

I live in a house with seven…

I live in a house with seven other guys about a block from campus. We pay about $700/month each, which is an absolute steal, even though we don't have A/C, pay all utilities, and sleep on some mattresses we found in the basement. Our landlord is cool and only raised our rent $20 each for next year.

Most of those highrises cost $1200/month at least. I would say the average student pays about $850-900, and the cheapest apartment I found when looking last year was $600, and it's not getting better. I imagine that when I graduate, my house will go for $1000/month.

I've probably had a dozen…

I've probably had a dozen meetings, office hours, class projects, and interviews at Espresso Royale over the past couple years. When you needed to meet with people, it was the place to do it.

I hope something with that same college-town feel replaces it.

South U Pizza is still there…

South U Pizza is still there I think, but people don't really go to it unless they're really high, in my experience.

And yeah, even as a student just entering my junior year, I'm worried about the direction the area is headed. Joe's Pizza is nice, and the new highrise apartments look good, but everything just feels so expensive and...preppy. A lot of campus is headed that direction, and I hope that the more middle-class, in-state students don't start to feel more out of place than we already do.

My faith in the police has…

My faith in the police has been shaken as well. Thought for a while it was just a few bad eggs, but now — although I think most cops are still decent people — it's clear that the problem is more widespread in our police departments than we thought.

"Non-partisan head of state"…

"Non-partisan head of state" is an interesting way to say "king."

And given everything that's gone on with Brexit, I wouldn't say we should be modeling ourselves after the UK.

Interesting to me that in…

Interesting to me that in France they awarded PSG the title. They were obviously going to win it, but it sets a precedent for what they'd do in the future if this happens again. Would they do the same if the league race was closer?

Also curious about how they'll handle it in the Premier League. Liverpool should absolutely be awarded the title if they can't finish the season, but there's still some hesitancy because they technically haven't clinched it yet (and, frankly, because people don't like Liverpool).

This is exactly correct, and…

This is exactly correct, and it's the approach that the Fed always took up until the, *ahem,* current administration.

Economic policy from legislators and the president will usually have the goal of short-term success to improve chances of reelection. Even with low unemployment, they'll try to keep juicing it so they can repeat bigger, sexier numbers come November.

That's why the Federal Reserve was designed to be apolitical and FOMC board members serve 14 year terms — they shouldn't have to worry about reelection and can always act in the best interest of the people.

Jerome Powell, though unqualified to head the Fed from the beginning, tried to uphold that legacy at first, but the board ultimately folded under pressure from the president and started cutting rates last July. Now, cutting rates is less effective because they're already negative with inflation, and negative rates are  w e i r d .  The Fed's only tool to combat the upcoming recession will be quantitative easing, which is unconventional, regressive, and also  w e i r d .

tl;dr: interest rates are negative because Fed cut rates under political pressure, now they can't cut them more which is bad.

I mean, if there's one thing I don't doubt from the last few years, it's Don Brown's ability to evaluate and develop linebackers. Cautiously optimistic about this one.

In my experience as a student, there are two types of people at Michigan: douchey frat boys, and people who want all frats shut down. There is no in between.

It goes to the school papers. You gotta remember that they don't receive any funding from the university, and the different beats traveling to games can really drain the budget because of rental cars, gas, hotels (if it's a tournament), etc. These donations can help fund smaller beats going to Big Ten and NCAA Tournament games — the baseball beat going to Omaha, for example, probably drained a lot of money.

It just looks too cluttered on the chest. Either the Jumpman or the B1G needs to go, and the 150 patch needs to be way smaller.

If it's a 65 inch TV, is it safe to assume you will be keeping it for a long time? If so, I would definitely recommend getting 4K so you know you'll be getting the best possible quality for years to come, especially with a TV that large. I honestly don't know how close we are to 4K being the standard, but it will come eventually, so you might as well spend the extra buck now so you don't feel the need to spring for a new TV when it does become standard.

The YouTube HD post included…

The YouTube HD post included stuff about a New York Times rundown of D1 football teams. We were #57, just behind Western Michigan at 56. Those were some painful years.

1. Four playoff teams are…

1. Four playoff teams are selected after the traditional bowl games are played. This forces contending teams to play a quality opponent and settles the "should UCF get in?" debate. Also can help cut down on players skipping bowl games.

2. Kickoff is replaced with a 4th and 15 from your own 40. Punts are more exciting and less dangerous, plus eliminates the randomness of onside kicks.

3. Overtime stays the same, except drives start at the 50 instead of the 25, so you can't always get an easy FG.
