Favorite on field memory of 2023?

You stole mine - Blake flashing Zak's number after the TD.  Chills.

On field moment that angered you of 2023?

Pick a time when Sherrone abandoned the run in the CFP, especially in short yardage situations.

Biggest surprise player of 2023?

I didn't expect Kenneth Grant to be the goliath gazelle he turned into this year.  Such a Dude.

Favorite feature of MgoBlog?

Gotta be Oppo Watch!  Eternal gratitude to Bryan for his labor of love.

I'm too old to know how much…

I'm too old to know how much this stuff matters to kids, but after going through all of those in order, by comparison UM's was actually sort of embarrassing.  Like... wedding slideshow basic.  They couldn't even be bothered to find pictures that didn't hide the first highlight.

Hopefully it doesn't matter much to future recruits, because that one particular bit of media is definitely a step (or five) behind.

This is exactly it. …

This is exactly it.  Harbaugh is a fantastic coach and has proven this at every stop.  We just happen to be in a division with a historical superpower in a time where the system is set up to allow them to sustain their reign.  He's recruiting very well considering things other posters have already mentioned.  He's throwing top money at top assistants.  He's consistently beating everyone we should beat.  I don't know what more you could ask for at this point besides literally stealing a game from OSU a couple times a decade.

A rebuild will not help.  There is no one on the planet better suited to sell Michigan the university, and Harbaugh is already showing that he's willing to change his system to match the contemporary game by giving Gattis the keys towards the end of the year with good results.  I don't see how a regime change has any chance to close the talent gap with OSU, so I'm happy with dominating State and hopefully overtaking PSU to become a perennial 2nd in the East.  There is no better alternative until some systematic changes happen in the NCAA that brings some more parity to recruiting.

I don't always learn new…

I don't always learn new words when reading about college football.

But when I do, it's from Opponent Watch.

I remember that and my…

I remember that and my stomach dropped when he made the first down arm shape, thinking that it was another flaggable arm shape.

Fully agree.  I couldn't…

Fully agree.  I couldn't care less what offense we run as long as it works.

I think you (and others)…

I think you (and others) missed my last sentence.  I think he was correct, but the way he made the point was very Debbie Downer like, "well sure they scored a lot and moved it when and how they wanted... BUT it wasn't true spread!  They tried earlier and failed!"

I fully agree that we are not a true spread, and he was correct, but he seemed unable to give credit for how well the offense is running, rather focusing on the fact that we had to change course from what we said we were going to be during the offseason.

Maybe that was because he has no fondness of UM, or maybe that's just what I took from it based on his tone, which indicated that he was miserable. He doesn't seem to enjoy being in front of a camera and was very uncomfortable.

It was interesting listening…

It was interesting listening to Urban try to be impartial.  I don't remember if it was halftime or post-game, but he was pretty dismissive about the offense's progress saying repeatedly that it isn't a true spread yet.  He tried to frame it like we had to go back to some older things because we weren't good enough to run Gattis' offense.

Also on his side.  When you…

Also on his side.  When you make a career move, you don't stick around to finish projects you're on.  You give you two week notice, and if you're nice try to help transition your open work to others.  You aren't required or expected to do anything else.  If he's leaving school to pursue employment, why would anyone look down on him for this?

I searched for a long time…

I searched for a long time to find a 350Z in Daytona Blue, but ultimately had to resort to a Magnetic Black Pearl.  It's got a nice shine in the sun, but man is it impossible to keep clean.  I made sure with my latest daily driver to find some color - a Mazda 6 in Lapis Blue Metallic.

Color is awesome and it's sad to see so much blah on the roads.

I remember walking across…

I remember walking across the backyard to my older neighbor kid's house to dig through his game collection for games to borrow during summer break.  I was probably 8, he was a teen.  I'd always grab Link's Awakening and my parents finally bought it for me one year for my birthday.  I've played that thing more times than I can count and can't wait for it to be on a current console!

I think the smart move would…

I think the smart move would still be to go second.  As you said, scoring on a 50 yard play would be rare.  Going first would mean you need to score to guarantee a victory, going second would mean you only need to gain 1 more yard than your opponent to win, since you will know exactly how many yards you need on your last play.  And since teams alternate plays, as the second team you would only need to aim for enough yards to sort of mirror the first team so that your last play is manageable.

I saw an interesting option on a Ringer article of this nature though - a blind auction for field position.  Each coach would provide the furthest back on their own side of the field that they'd be willing to take the ball.  Whoever bid the closest to their endzone gets it.  No coin toss, no randomness.  You want to go first?  Better have confidence in your offense.  It would be interesting to say the least.

This site got blocked for me…

This site got blocked for me yesterday as well on my work's network.  Something about a security issue with the URL, nothing about the site itself.  Something must have changed this morning though as I'm able to get to it now.

According to who?  And what…

According to who?  And what are the qualifications of the person who made this definition to determine what is or is not a sport based on the level of physical activity performed?

The IOC recognizes chess and golf as sports.  Golf is mainly a game played solo, not against someone else directly, but does have physical requirements.  Chess is directly played against an opponent, but has zero physical requirements.

The games being discussed here have more physical requirements (hand-eye coordination, muscle memory, finger dexterity) than chess and share a myriad of similarities with team sports that golf does not have.  You can take a pedantic stance that there is not enough of a physical element to the games to call them a sport if you'd like I suppose.  I see enough qualities in them that they are sports to me.  Not athletics, but sports.

These games have rosters,…

These games have rosters, coaches, scouts, practices, etc.  The matches are live, real-time competitions with other humans.  The games require insane reflexes, instant decision-making, and play-calling/coordination with your teammates.  There are specific objectives and scoring with rules which govern how you can play.

I'm not sure how you can get much more "sport" than that.  But, I will agree that they are in no way "athletics", which then would seem odd for them to come under the wing of the NCAA, which is an "athletic association".

He most definitely did get …

He most definitely did get "let go" by all of the insider accounts I've read and heard.  It has been said that he was not formally fired as a kind gesture.

Yeah. OP said he wasn't…

Kind of. OP said he wasn't fully on board with the notion of Higdon sitting out this game.  He even qualified his thoughts with the quality of the defense in this particular bowl game and the amount of film Higdon had may not show what he can do against good defenses.

BeatOSU52 did construct a straw man by himself though, although not directly in reference to OP.  No one said anything about any round of a draft pick; 4th round was mentioned.  No one said anything about the type of bowl game; an SEC defense was mentioned without even mentioning a specific bowl game or level of bowl game.  He took the OP's questioning of the decision and turned it into an incredibly hard line that the OP never took.

I'm not sure if you missed…

I'm not sure if you missed it, but we steamrolled three of those six teams this past year. Those three teams appear to be set up for stagnation or decline, so may very well be less scary than they seemed this year.

We lost to one by one score in the first game under a new QB on the road.  They ended up going to the CFP.

We lost lost to another in a bad game on the road to a rival top 5 team, even if they did not play that way all year.

The last remaining team we did not play was very unimpressive.

You may have to explain why we should be afraid of next year.  This year the team did absolutely everything they could be expected to do outside of laying the usual egg against OSU.  I don't see why next year will be any different based on the returning talent.

I'd say it's much harder to…

I'd say it's much harder to win 12 out of 13 games to with the football NC than to make a run in March.  With how the CFP is set up, the entire season is basically March Madness.  Lose two (or even one - ask OSU) and you're not even given a shot.

Basketball you can have a rough early season, make a run in your conference tourney, and then bring it all together in March.  Football demands perfection from start to finish.

Agreed.  I almost typed as…

Agreed.  I almost typed as much but didn't want to diminish the courage of the kids who are the ones dealing with it first-hand.  My wife was about ready to crumple like a burnt leaf waiting for results.  I can't imagine what others are going through.

After reading these two…

After reading these two articles, I'm glad I have a nasty cold that took my voice the past day and some change.  Now if someone stops by I can act like I can't talk because of that instead of because I'm holding back tears.  We had a cancer scare with our oldest, now 6, and I don't even know what I'd do if the results had been flipped.  These kids are strong as heck.

After the first few drives…

After the first few drives of the second half, I texted my dad.

Me: "I do not recognize this team."

Him: "Sure you do.  It's the same team that plays OSU every year."

That is why I was expecting a loss regardless of each team's body of work.  And why I will expect a loss each year.  Something is out to get us.

I think I read that one four…

I think I read that one four times.  Each one getting a more vivid picture in my mind.  The last time around I saw a CEO type in a suit along with a white-coated scientist hunched over in a tree watching red baboon things slamming their fists into cars trying to make them move.

" You can say all you want…

" You can say all you want about, ‘Boy the film looked good.’ And, ‘Boy you’re really doing good. You mentioned how Carlo, he really improved.’ Do you understand what that means if you don't go and get better in this next game? That doesn’t mean anything."

My favorite quote of the presser.  I don't want to hear "weeeellll, I thought we had a great week of practice..."  It's awesome that these kids are buying into the idea that you have to show up every game like it's the most important game yet - because it is.

According to this reddit…

According to this reddit thread, that wasn't a vertical boat, but rather the Arkansas remained horizontal and prevented the water from spouting up, resulting in a dark spot.

https://www.reddit.com/r/shockwaveporn/comments/5zrpfh/best_version_of_this_photo_ive_seen_uss_arkansas/

The National Park Service did a very detailed survey of the site. Here's the relevant chapter, ctrl-f "Arkansas".

The most famous photograph of Baker. The dark spot in the column marks the position of the capsizing Arkansas. Crossroads mythology mistakenly insists this photo shows the upended form of the battleship.

Further down,

The Navy determined that the upsurging blast water "acted on Arkansas from below and to starboard at a point approximately one-third of her length from the bow." [46] This mass of upsurging water capsized the ship to port. The Navy concluded, "The many holes and rivets seams which were opened throughout the entire length of the shell plating by the underwater explosion were the probable sources of flooding. A water wave which smashed over the Arkansas...may have partially aided in swamping the ship."

Is there any chance he stays…

Is there any chance he stays though, assuming his numbers and play stays at the level he's been at so far?  I have yet to see him be a first round pick in any mock draft, unless I've missed something.  I'm not familiar with what next year's QB class will look like, but he definitely projects behind 4-5 other QBs for the '19 draft.

This is a good idea Ace.  I…

This is a good idea Ace.  I'm not able to contribute due to my own family's medical bills at the moment, but I hope that you'll able to get back to some semblance of "normal" with dedicated time off and community support.  It won't (and hasn't) been the same around here without you.

PS - did a doctor tell you that 5'10"/130-135 is dangerous?  I'm 5'11" and have weighed between 130-140 since I was 15 (I'm 32 now).  I inherited my body type and insane metabolism from my mom's dad, and while I'm very thin, have never been told I look unhealthy or felt that way.  I've played team athletics my entire life and also practiced a martial art for several years after college at this weight... so hopefully you'll be ok there for a while!

Then I suppose I need to…

Then I suppose I need to balance that out with a future Gertrude, Francine, and Bertha.

To many people, cars are a significant part of their life.  For some they are just transportation, for some just a fun hobby, but for others, car culture is their way of life outside of work.  Before I got married, much of my spare time was spent hanging out with friends from various car clubs, going to shows, wrenching, driving, detailing, etc.  Met a whole ton of awesome people from diverse backgrounds.  Took a lot of awesome trips and drove beautiful roads I'd never have seen otherwise.

Sure do.  My cars over the years:

  • '91 Cutlass Supreme SL: Trista.
  • '00 Grand Prix GT: Chloe
  • '05 Legacy GT: Syndey
  • '06 Mazda 6 S: Ocean
  • '06 Nissan 350Z Enthusiast: Jade
  • '07 Mazda CX-9 Grand Touring: Pearl

Still in love with Jade! (hope the picture works... I hit the picture button on the edit bar, "uploaded" a picture from my PC, then "selected" that picture after it finished uploading.)

I'm not sure if you've heard…

I'm not sure if you've heard what Larry Nassar did to hundreds of young girls, but this situation is magnitudes larger than the school he worked at while he did what he did.  There are quite a few people who care how this plays out including people who didn't even know MSU existed before this scandal.

I took it as hyperbole.  But…

I took it as hyperbole.  But still odd because the franchise is less than 15 years removed from a ring and close to a second.  That's a lot more recent success than the majority of the teams in the NBA and I don't know if it warrants such an exaggeration.  They aren't the Lions.

Battletech

Battletech certainly scratches the giant robot itch for now.  It reminds me a lot of the original MechCommander, which is a GOOD thing.  Only issues is it's very buggy right now.

Hopefully MW5 also hits the right notes.

Bobby made 28.6m last year...

...so I think he can bankroll these for quite a while if he wants to:

Putting so much into a money pit

of a Subaru.  Had an awesome daily for a few years, an 05 Legacy GT.  Replaced exhaust parts as they failed with age and had it conservatively tuned.  Very quick car, fun to drive, decent interior and could fit the kids in the back.

Belt jumped timing one day due to a gear bearing failing, and bent a bunch of valves and messed up both heads. I asked around and a few people promised me that it was worth getting the car running agian even if only to sell it.  Well the repairs ended up being more extensive than I thought once they opened it up, but I was already in for a penny, so...

Finished it up.  Drove it for a few weeks, and then the turbo started it's death squeal.  I threw in the towel and sold it as-is for a HUGE loss.  I only got half out of the work I put into it, much less what I could have got just by selling it as-is before the fix.  It still makes my stomach turn.  I vowed never again to mod my daily driver... but we'll see how that goes :)

Finding an affordable WRX

in the Pacific NW?  Good luck!  I hear they're like gold up there.  Also good luck getting the wife to approve the purchase of a fun car... I was fortunate to get mine in before I got married.

If he's doing this out of spite...

then I'm guessing he doesn't exactly care if everyone leaves and the site dies.

Brady takes a pay cut

willingly so may not be the best example.  But agree with your point.  In a league with so many teams without a even passable QB, Stafford being a dependable "very good" is worth the money.

Someone with a five game sample set?  Probably not.

As a current FW Resident...

...who vacations in Charlevoix (near TC), you DEFINITELY traded up.  And I hate you for getting out.

Contained but horrific...

is a good way to describe it.  It doesn't sound like a pattern like with Dantonio, but at least from what we know now, it seems like those few isolated incidents may be more damning in that Izzo was intimately involved, whereas Dantonio might have just been knowingly turning a blind eye.

They're both done either way.

Oh man the comments...

"There's not a coach in football or basketball with the moral standards and sound ethics that Izzo and Dantonio have."

It's one thing to try and rationalize questionable things those two coaches have done.  It's something else to dimiss the accusations entirely.  But to go a step further and put these two on a moral pedestal?  I don't even have words for that.

A CLASSY move?

Did you read her resignation letter?  Her first paragraph is absolutely embarassing to read.

She first shrinks the entire situation down to only the last couple of years "The last year and a half has been very difficult..."

And then heavily implies that MSU and herself are both victims "...for the victims of Larry Nassar, for the university community, and for me personally..."

before finally giving the ultimate non-apology: "I am so sorry that a trusted, renowned physician was really such an evil, evil person..."

She then goes on to say in effect that "well, I was going to resign anyway", and "I'm just doing it to not be in the spotlight anymore", reinforcing that this is not her taking responsibility for anything, it's just what she was going to do anyway and was sick of the heat.

She's a reprehensible person and CLASSY is the absolute last adjective I would use to describe her or anyone else involved on the MSU side.

Buy the cheapest.

Get generic blank rotors (if needed) and generic pads.  Unless you're going to be doing some serious weekend driving on twisties or at a track, anything more than that is overkill.

Rotors only need to be addressed when you feel pulsing when you brake - this is due to the rotors warping from heat and uneven pad wear.  The rotors only really need replaced if they are too worn down to be "turned" (flattened out) again.  Your shop will let you know if that's the case.  However, blank rotors are so cheap that you shouldn't feel bad doing them if you'd like.

I've always done brakes/pads on all of my vehicles FWIW since it's so easy to swap in new rotors while you've already got the calipers off for the pads.  If you have a set of sockets, a breaker bar, and a mallet, it's a pretty easy DIY job with an afternoon and a few beers for 200 bucks.

From a Car Nut

and backyard mechanic... I've never taken a trans apart, but I'd tell you right now to drive that thing to Carmax today, return it, and never look back.  Dodge/Chrysler cars are and have been notorious for poor transmissions (and quality in general), even before you consider that CVTs are terrible for reliability just by design.  The more recent CVTs are getting better, but the paltry mpg gains aren't worth it IMO.

What's your budget and "need"?  Just something for commuting that gets decent milage?  Avengers are the bottom of the barrel in their segment and there was a reason FCA dropped it completely for the Dart... which also failed spectacularly.  If you just want an A to B compact, get a Civic, Corolla, or Cruze IMO.  Parts and labor will be cheaper if they do break, and reliability is leaps and bounds above FCA cars.

To be fair

To be fair, DB has likely made more money during his short time at TRU than most of us will make over the course of our lives.  Even if he somehow was forced out today and in such a way that the probable golden parachute in his contract wasn't given to him, he would still be ridiculously wealthy.

So no, I don't feel bad being happy that he's sad.

PS - bankruptcy =/= closing all stores.

I'd guarantee the opposite

I'd guarantee the opposite at UM.  These guys are either JH recruits or have been in his system for long enough to know that competition is part of being on a JH team.  I can't see why any of them would be frustrated with what they willingly signed up for.

Skimmed as well

I did the same when I read this earlier today... my kids are nowhere near this one's age, but I couldn't bear to read it through.  I started skimming once I got to the football game.  I just about lost it in the office when I got to the "he's gone" part.  I think I read that five times over it hit so hard.

The worst part of this though was that the injury wasn't head-related.  I had a symptomless mono like this kid had several years ago, with only a sore throat leading me to a walk-in clinic to get diagnosed.  I could have very easily ruptured it playing rec soccer or something had I ignored it like he did.

LP was Highschool

Hybrid Theory was one of the first few albums I ever bought.  I can't remember how many times I had to re-burn a copy because my CD got scratched from bringing it to every car I rode in in the early 2000's.

Seeing them at DTE as headliners of the Projekt Revolution Tour was still my best concert experience.  Thousands of exhausted, hot, buzzed folks singing along with every word of every song through 3 encores after having to suffer through MCR (ugh).  I got to see them a second time about 5 years ago as well.  Not quite as good of a venue, but Chester and Mike still brought it.

I know they weren't everyone's cup of tea, but for those of us who grew up on late 90's alt, they were one of the pillars of your music collection.

I think I'd go by

Tim.  Or Timmy.  Or Timbo.  Or anything besides Timothy.

It's a great looking car, but...

Don't get me wrong, I love the Z34.  I own a Z33 (previous gen 350Z), and ran a club in my mid 20's for Z/G cars.  It's just the fact that the Z34 in 2017 is basically the exact same car you could buy in 2009.  Meanwhile the Mustang, a commonly cross-shopped car, has gone through multiple revisions.  The VQ is a great motor but it's long in the tooth.  The gas milage is not great, it drinks premium fuel, and the motor is high compression from the factory and very hard to make more power with.  The platform is heavy for a 2-seater and resale value is very low.

If you have 10k, my advice is to take another year and save 5k more.  You should be able to get one with low milage for cash, and not lose anything in regards to performance... because again, the car is the same as it was 8 years ago except a different front bumper.

Again, sexy car.  My Z33 is black like your picutres (though heavily modified), and people still stop me and ask what it is and can't believe it's 10 years old.  I saved cash after college and purchased it for 15k, and I've had it in the repair shop a grand total of maybe 3 times in 50,000 miles for consumables like wheel bearings.  No reason to pay a car payment for one.
