OT: Nick Ward is done with school

This was trending yesterday, but didn't see it posted anywhere on the board, and thought it's too good not to have posted here.

Kind of funny if you ask me ...at least he's not one of those group project people that are trying to get credit for not ever doing any work.

Will embed tweet in next post.

Honestly, I'd probably do the same thing.

Very few people would actually do what Andrew Luck did and finish out his classes before jumping.

So, because he's an athlete, he should have called everyone to a meeting to formally tell them that he is dropping the class and not doing the project with them?

I've had plenty of regular students just stop showing up to classes randomly without having to have an in person meeting to inform everyone of their departure.

I'm going to bet these guys tell their professors. This looks like he was just telling the group members separately.

Definitely does stink getting left out to dry, but that's life. I'd rather a person tell me to take their name off and that they're done than somebody make me do the work and expect their name on the project.

More formally? What is the proper etiquette for delivering this type of message? Invite them all to coffee and tell them it's not them, it's him?

Also, there's no indication he didn't tell his professor.

This was a pretty thoughtful courtesy to let his team know and text is a perfectly acceptable way to deliver it.  Young people don't listen to voicemails (they rarely even set them up), and barely read emails so this was probably the best way to deliver the message.

For a minute Ward read that text and the request that he help with "analysis" wrong and said, "Anal tits? They want me to help with anal tits??? Well, I might be down for that before I leave campus....OHHHH, analysis. Got it. Nah, that's ok..."

I'm guessing most students assume any D-1 athlete on their group projects with borderline NBA level talent aren't going to be providing much useful input for class projects. They're probably glad he quit removing any questions that the rest of the group did all the work by themselves.

For a guy that is AT BEST a marginal NBA prospect, and more likely a long-term starter for the Kyrgyzstan Fighting Kyrgys, you think he'd at least finish up the semester.

I can somewhat understand them in undergrad, though I still didn't like them. Alot of people live on campus, so it's not that hard to get together and work on things. But when I did my MSW and was still having to do group projects, I was losing my mind. Half the people in my program (myself included) were still working fulltime while in the program and nobody lived around/on campus. Ridiculous expectations from professors IMO. Luckily Google Drive exists.

Absolutely. I had a group project where participation points for the group didn't add up to an A for everyone if split evenly. Everyone had to submit their own document about what they and others did. So basically if you wanted an A for participation you had to talk shit about your group mates, which we found out after it was done. One guy did most of the work but that's because he tried to own the whole thing from the very beginning. So I ended up arguing we should split the participation points, which would give us each a B plus for that component. Great way to build teamwork, professor.

I am surprised he even gave his group a heads up. I am more surprised he isn't finishing the semester, considering it's maybe a week away? At most, when he announced his decision there was 2 weeks of winter semester remaining. Smart guy.........

not to flip this sideways, but we're talking about someone who is thinking (justifiably or not) about maybe going to the nba someday.

counting on him to be a fully equal partner in your group is either a) not the smartest way to approach the project, or b) a pretty good sign that you wanted him in your group so you could someday tell people that you "worked on a group project with NICK WARD!"

also, i'm pretty sure nick ward "finished school" the moment he signed with msu.

Unless I want to tell people I was in a group project with a big time college basketball player, I'm not seeking one out to be in my group during March/April lol especially at Michigan or MSU.

"Dude where TF were you all last month???"

I am with Nick Ward there...not sure why anyone would expect a basketball player to put in any more effort than required to stay eligible, which is a moot point once you declare.

I also “lol” at anyone who thinks Michigan players are somehow more educationally engaged than those at other schools..

Also on his side.  When you make a career move, you don't stick around to finish projects you're on.  You give you two week notice, and if you're nice try to help transition your open work to others.  You aren't required or expected to do anything else.  If he's leaving school to pursue employment, why would anyone look down on him for this?
