If the rule is no in-person…

If the rule is no in-person scouting/recording, then each team can prepare to the level of keeping their signals obfuscated during a single game.  No need to put any more time towards signals under this scenario.

If the rule is changed so that every team knows their signals can be scouted and recorded, then each team can take the measures (and time) they see necessary to counteract this.  Under this scenario it is a minimal to nil advantage and why a committee would consider it as such.

However, when the rule is no in-person scouting/recording and a team does scout/record this provides an obvious advantage.  Opposing teams are not aware to the extent their signals have already been studied/decoded and are not extensively prepared to counteract.  The advantage in this scenario is obvious and significant, particularly for conference match-ups with limited time to react.

Compost what you can - if…

Compost what you can - if you have horse manure available, then get some.

Don't be afraid to try anything, experiment.   Over the years my dad grew sugar cane (for molasses), grapes (for wine), and popcorn.  We had a peach tree for a few years (it didn't really pan out).

Find some things that don't take as much hand holding to produce.

1. Strawberry plants - generally 3 years to full maturity.  At year 3, thin the patch and rotate some of them to new ground.  Do this every fall after the 3rd year.

2. Jade Green Beans - the steak of Green Beans.  There are *no* substitutes.  I will literally eat them, and only them, for dinner.  My neighbor thought I was kidding so I gave him some seed.  He plants more every year now.  If the bunny don't eat them as the grow they are very low maintenance.

3. Rhubarb - takes 3 years to mature and really produce.  Goes nice with your strawberry.  Once it produces, you pretty much just harvest every year.

4. Chives - No work at all - just plant once and harvest every year.  I have some by my back porch so I can grab them in the morning and add into eggs, etc.

5. Cucumbers - nice to make pickles, great in salads, add to your water, and a number of summer pool drinks.  Pretty much just plant and harvest.

6. Mint - once you plant you can pretty much just harvest (generally the difficulty is keeping it in one area).

My family had nearly 2 acres in garden when I was growing up.  As kids, it was work, but we had an appreciation for it.  Strawberry, cherry, apple, raspberry, and blackberry pies helped with that.

If you have kids/grand kids then sunflowers, watermelon, and pumpkins are a generally a hit.  Plant a few flowers around your garden.

If you are looking to have that much of your food from the garden you will need to learn how to preserve and can.

Good luck!

Smoked meatloaf

I've made…

Smoked meatloaf

I've made dozens and dozens of variations of this one.  Make your first to recipe and then experiment with spicier, etc. I make 3-4 of these at at time with variations.  I like to have 3 days for this.  Day 1, mix up your loafs and put in the fridge under saran wrap overnight. (I have colored toothpicks I put in them to differentiate (Red=spicy, green=pickled, etc.) Cook day 2, into the fridge overnight, reheat day 3 and serve.   You can cook the same day you mix, but do not serve the same day you cook.

Thoroughly mix in bowl:
1 LB      Ground Beef (raw)
1 (one)  Bratwurst - Johnsonville fine, just need some fat (remove casing, mixed into ground beef)
1 (one)   Egg
½ Cup    Uncooked Oats
½ Cup    Milk  (if you can save pickle juice, this is a flavorful substitute that kids really like)
1 TBSP   Minced Onions
1 TBSP   Dried Celery Flakes (optional)
1 TBSP   Worcestershire Sauce
1 TBSP   Ketchup
1 TBSP   BBQ Sauce (Famous Dave’s Rich & Sassy)
1 TBSP   A1 Steak Sauce
1 tsp       Salt
1 tsp       Famous Dave’s Rib Rub (sub your own favorite rub to add spice, etc.)
½ tsp      Black Pepper
1/4 cup chopped onion & 1/4 cup chopped bell peppers (sub hotter peppers to taste)

Preheat smoker to 235 degrees F, get smoke rolling (hickory) - cannot over smoke - ashtray it, the smokier the better.  If you have a shag bark hickory tree nearby and can get some of the bark - this is fantastic for this recipe as it just rolls the smoke.

Cook appox 2.5 Hours (165 degrees in center)
* Smoke one hour in disposable pan, remove and place loaf on foiled rack (can start on foil if preferred, hand-form the loaf- will shed a lot of moisture, so be prepare to catch it)

Do *not*, do *not*, do *not* serve this the day you smoke it.  There is a good deal of moisture in this recipe.  Smoke the day before and put in the fridge overnight.  This will seal in all the juices and smoke flavor will be 10x better the next day.  Next day slice and either reheat in the oven @200, roaster, or even mircowave.  Will be much better than you can image.  You can experiment with sauce on top, etc., but most people seem to like this best without topping.

I rarely smoke one think at a time. I will add a meat loaf in with other items like pork shoulder or brisket and I will often smoke sausage, brats, kielbasa, chicken, and/or turkey at the same time then chop it up, put it in a freezer bag, and add it to Jambalaya/Gumbo.

Nope.  Day was addressing…

Nope.  Day was addressing the team after the Big10 conference call.   Was said only to the team.

This was my immediate…

This was my immediate thought as well. Its extremely hard to beat a team that "knows" it will beat you.  Not thinks, not false bravado, but knows, even when they are down.  It is pretty much impossible to beat that same team if you don't think you can win either.

That 2020 game was set up to be a massacre.  Had it occurred, there is a pretty decent chance that Harbaugh is let go.  But it didn't happen.  Instead, there was a pause that gave Mich a chance to reset.   From there, dominoes toppled.  Hutchinson comes back on a mission and provides a much needed leadership boost.  Staff changes.  Michigan established an identity.  The grow confidence on how they can win "The Game", then do it.

My perspective as an OSU fan…

My perspective as an OSU fan:

The OSU defense *is* significantly improved over last season.  Is it enough?  Literally *any* offense could do whatever they wanted against them last season. This season they have been able to contain the mid to low powered teams on the schedule and get a stop here and there against teams with a pulse.  This OSU defense will give up some points to be sure ... but they gamble this year and that leads to TFL which throws teams off schedule and the occasional stop and/or turnover.

If Corum is healthy, this is a much more interesting (scary) aspect of the game to me.  He sheds tackles very well.  If he gets hit in the backfield and sheds ... perhaps no TFL or a decent gain out of that and not off schedule.  If the RB gets dropped for -2 leading to 2nd and 12 or 3rd and 6 its likely the pass will come into play more for Blue and that plays into OSU's favor IMO.

Lots of different pre/post snap looks this year on defense - that is new.  Have seen some vapor lock with opposing QBs this year, which is nice.  They make adjustments in game and at half where last year they just took the same punches to the face again and again.

Eichenberg has injuries to both his hands - he is still a force, but not the sure tackler he was earlier in the season.  Lathan Ransom has been instrumental from the Safety position. He is all over the field.  Unfortunately, he broke his thumb this week - likely to be wearing a club on Saturday.  Two of the top 3 tacklers with bad hands is not a good formula for success against Corum.

DL is ok.  They hold contain significantly better than past teams, but don't rush the QB with as much vigor.   Have been more aggressive these last few games so not sure if that is opponent drive or ramping up towards the Game.

CBs has been dinged up all year - have true freshman getting significant time.   They have not shown all that well, but I don't see that as something Blue will be able to take advantage of on the regular.  The Safety position is much improved.

The offense really, really, really misses JSN.  JSN could get open in a phone booth and Stroud could thread it that tight space to him.  JSN missing keeps the offense from being a fully operational death star.  JSN was a cheat code on short yard situations, which helped cover the faults of the run game.  The offense can still score, score quickly, and in bunches ... but not the same as the last 2 season IMO. They can be stopped.

Harrison Jr is a complete stud.  After him there is a cadre of good players, but not yet great.  If you can match up with the rest of the good players, then the offense can be slowed.  If OSU can score quickly, that is trouble.  If they have to drive methodically down the field, they will eventually get stuffed on a run or commit a penalty.

RBs:  If Williams is 100% healthy, no worries.  He runs with a purpose.  He has not been healthy most of the season.  If Henderson is healthy he is a home run threat, but not the guy to get you a 3rd and 2.  He has not been healthy most of the season.   The clear 3rd string RB was Evan Pryor who had a season ending knee injury in August.  Hayden is the 4th string RB ... and he has looked pretty good when given the chance.  Most OSU fans would prefer he start next week over a dinged up Williams and/or Henderson.

IMO - biggest factor for both teams is the health of their lead RBs (Williams and Corum).

OSU Wild cards:

* Xavier Johnson - former walk-on (now on scholarship) - WR, RB, and recent kick returner

* Mike Hall Jr. - push up the middle from the defensive interior when he can stay on the field - which is not often.

The question was - "Who do…

The question was - "Who do you think will be in the top six or ten in tonight's release?"  I think this is the order the committee will slot them, not where I would slot them.

But since you asked specifically about OSU and Mich ... Best win for both is Penn State.  I'd say the 2nd best win is ND.  Slight edge to OSU.  OSU is ahead of Michigan in the human polls.  OSU is ahead of Michigan in any metric driven ranking I have seen.

But mostly, OSU is quite a bit ahead of Michigan in the simulated BCS polls.  I believe the committee uses a ranking method very similar to the old BCS in their rankings and then tries to fit a narrative around those rankings.  This is why they don't seem to have much consistency year to year.

An early season match-up is…

An early season match-up is easily the best solution for OSU, Mich, and the Big10 in general.   OSU and Mich will most often be highly ranked early in the season so TV can have their big match-up.  This means the winner of the game has a top win and the loser doesn't drop too much.   The teams both get a chance to grow during the season and if they both do well the meet again at the Big10 championship.  If both teams have one loss to each other and both games were close they both have a good chance to seed well in the playoffs.

The SEC has figured out chicken-shit Saturday games so teams have a chance to heal before their big games and post-season.   Big10 has willingly put themselves at a disadvantage this last decade or so.

I park at Martha Morehouse Outpatient Care: Enter at 2050 Kenny Road Columbus, OH, 43221

Last year it was $20.  As recently as a few years ago all parking funds went to help patients, etc. but I haven't re-verified this recently.

Out of this lot, short-cut through the grass behind the OSU Police Dept building leads to Woody Hayes Dr.  Follow the people or look for an outdoor hockey rink.  If you GPS the address above you will get a good feel for your path to the stadium. It is an easy 10 minute walk to the stadium.   You will walk by a number of tailgate spots on Woody Hayes Dr. and some public porta-potties are available along this route.

Generally pretty easy in and not too bad getting out after the games as you have a 10-15 minute walk to get back to the lot.

This parking and walking route avoids frat boys, bars, etc.  There will likely be several cops on the street at a few locations directing traffic, etc.  The tailgates on that end of campus tend to be older/more family oriented.  Last week there were 1000s of ND fans intermingled in this area and I didn't hear or see anything but people having a good time.  If you wear Toledo gear and don't instigate anything I would be stunned if anyone even noticed you.

Stay for the half-time show, the band is seriously entertaining.

Hope you get good weather and enjoy the game.

I put the world on hold for "The Game" ... but it is obvious that if your goal is playoffs/National Championship that it should not be the last regular game of the regular season.

Rankings favor blue-bloods that are playing each other early.  They are both over-ranked to foster excitement/ratings/tv audience.  Winner gets a boost, loser doesn't drop much.  OSU vs. Mich earlier doesn't knock one of them out from the playoffs.

Win the rest of your games and the hold the rematch for the title.   The SEC is two decades in front of the BIG on this.  Have a chicken-shit Saturday late in the schedule to allow your teams to heal-up and be ready for rivalry, conference championship, and playoffs.

If the BIG wants to claim smarty-pants bonafides, etc. - perhaps they should apply this to football scheduling.  The hayseeds down south are running circles around the Yankees.

My neighborhood has…

My neighborhood has chartered a bus for several of the Big10 championship games and it has been glorious.  The bus picked us up in our neighborhood (I had to walk a block).  Ride over was comfortable and we had some adult beverages along the way.  The bus arrived a few hours before the game. One year we just stayed on the bus (cold as hell) and another year we walked around until game time.  The bus was parked close to the gates so it was a short walk back to the bus after the game.   Commiserate/Celebrate on the ride back to the neighborhood and enjoy a few more adult beverages.

If you can find some like-minded folks in your circle you might consider it as an option.   Personally, I much preferred the bus to driving/parking on my own and/or trying to find a hotel within walking distance.

I think the bus ride was ~$100-$120 per person.   For reference: I live about a 2 hour car drive from Indy, you are probably closer to 4 hours so might be a bit more.

Good luck either way and enjoy the game.  I am 50+ so it was a nice change of pace to watch a college game in a climate controlled environment.

I had a foul ball from AAA (Louisville) so I gave that to him and over they years we also got one from A ball (Dayton), and AA (Chattanooga) so he has a pretty neat set on the shelf in his bedroom.

Well dang.  This struck a…

Well dang.  This struck a chord with me today.  My advice would be to remember.  Talk about those memories with your family.  Tell stories to your kids.

Forgive my ramblings, its more for me than for you.

I don't think I will ever "get over" Dad not being around. I lost my Dad a 7 years back after a 10 year fight with cancer.  He went in for some dental work and they sent him for a routine check-up before they would perform the work. Turns out he had late stage prostate cancer.  When he got the news at 70 he was still very active, strong, flexible, and required no medications.  We all thought he would be around into his 90's.

He was OK with checking out, but went through Chemo, etc. so he could stick around for Mom.  Once he was too far gone he volunteered for every trial he could get into.  He wanted to support the medical community learning as much as they could. Most of these trials would stall the cancer for 3-4 months, and then not work anymore, however, you still had to take the medications in perpetuity.  Towards the end he was taking fistfuls of meds a few times a day.  No why me, never a complaint, just thanks for helping out, good to see you.

It would not be possible to forget him.  He passed along standards for work (hard and honest), family (always comes first), and passions for leisure (outdoors, fishing, and gardening).   If someone needs help, you give it.

It would be pretty cool to be known for one thing after you are gone.  Dad was well known for at least three.

Dad was a talented and particular brick, block, and stone mason.  His stone fireplace work was always in high demand.  He never advertised, just word of mouth. All the kids, including my older sister, carried hod, mixed mud, and set up scaffolding at some point.  The job wasn't done until there was no trace we had been there.  I live 30 miles from my hometown, but I look a lot like my Dad.  I will have people stop me out of the blue and ask if I am related to my Dad and then tell me he built their house, fireplace, etc. and what an amazing job he did, etc.

From 8-16 years old I went fishing every weekend Ohio would allow across 3/4 of the seasons (Ice fishing never took with me).  Dad was very well known in our area as an expert Crappie fisherman.  When I was a little older I noticed that we would see some of the same folks as we moved from location to location. It took me a bit to realize they were following us.  Dad didn't care.  He could drop into a hole after they had fished it and pull out the ones they could not.  He took us kids out.  He took his father and father-in-law out.  He took a number of local kids out.   He took out multiple kids with disabilities and put them on fish.  It was hard to tell who was happier about the whole deal, the kids, their parents, or Dad.  He had a regular route of widows he would drop off fish for.

If you came to my Dad's house, you got a grand tour of the garden. This was not negotiable, there were no exceptions. You didn't realize you were on a tour until it was too late.  This could be a bit awkward if you were just out to read the gas meter. :-)  Our "garden" was approx 2 acres when I was a kid.  At 70 he still kept about 1/4 acre.  At one time or another we grew about everything; potatoes, sweet potatoes, radish, horseradish, beets, turnips, green beans, peas, carrots, squash, pumpkins, melon, watermelon, zucchini, strawberry, blackberry, raspberry, peppers, tomatoes, onions, cucumbers, cabbage, cauliflower, asparagus, broccoli, lettuce, endive, arugula, spinach, sweet corn, herbs of all sorts, and I am not joking at all ... sugar cane (molasses) and popcorn.  We had a few apple trees, pears, cherry tree, and elderberry.  I will have to ask Mom, but I swear he tried to grow a peach tree at one time.  Needless to say, people stopped by to ask him gardening questions.  He had a regular route of widows he would drop off produce for.  My neighbor gets a kick out of noticing myself and my wife each taking at least one trip a day to inspect our garden (rain or shine).  On many days, multiple trips.  Our garden is an *ahem*, very substantial 12 ft x 12 ft.  I maintain strawberry plants that were transplanted from my Dad's garden.  They have spawned 9 (and soon to be 10) more strawberry patches.

My Dad was a straight arrow, but it is amusing to look back and realize he was more hippy than most hippies.  Everything had multiple uses, so nothing got tossed.  He would routinely put together a bunch of disparate cast-offs and junk and make something useful out of it.   We had rain barrels.  We had bins and bins of compost.   Dad's garden was nearly 8" higher than the lawn due to the layers of "black gold".  No chemicals in the garden.  No chemicals on the lawn (he pulled weeds in the lawn with a claw hammer). We had an apple cider press.  He tapped the maple trees and made syrup.   We harvested walnuts.  He made wine. We canned everything.

I have many good memories of my Dad.

A few years back the Mrs. and I stumbled into an invitation for a private evening at a regional Chocolatier that included a tour, stories from their 100+ year family history, and a few hours of conversation around bourbon and chocolates.  The "buffet" included twenty some varieties of bourbon and paired chocolates.  A really great evening.  I stumbled out of that one as well.

Keith Gary attempting to rip off Ken Anderson's head stands out to me.

Your post has my mind…

Your post has my mind spinning.  How would you assume that is a thing ... or that it matters?

I have not watched all of Mich's games this year, but I have seen quite a few.  If forced to wager on it, it'd be an easy pick for me that Michigan's starting QB has played a larger percentage of the team's total snaps than Fields has for OSU.

The whole premise seems to be that UM keeps its starters in a game for a while longer after the opposing team pulls its starters, right? Otherwise, starters vs. starters shouldn't help pad stats.

Why would you assume that?

I didn't read it that way.  The poster stated: "Michigan's offensive effort are almost exclusively with starters, where the school in ohio has a very healthy dose of backup effort within those stats."

I read that as Mich starters vs. Opponent starters is likely more snaps than OSU starters vs. Opponent starters.   Not  that Mich is keeping its starters in when the opponent puts backups in, but rather OSU has backups in while opponents have starters in.  (OSU has given up a fair amount of pts to both Maryland and Rutgers with 2nd and 3rd string defense on the field - OSU literally emptied the bench.  71 of 74 OSU players that traveled to Rutgers played)

It's not just about padding stats against somebody's second string.  It's about opportunity.  If two quarterbacks in the same conference have similar rate stats the one with 800 snaps will likely have accrued more completions, yards and touchdowns than the QB with 600 snaps.

The OSU vs MSU game is the only game in which one (or more) of tOSU's backup QBs hasn't got a snap. It's hard to miss Fields on the sidelines.  Backup QBs have 175 snaps in 10 games.

Isn't OSU the team that took a timeout right before half to try to put up another 7 points on NW? and they had an onside kick against MD despite being up by a few scores?  They hardly seem like a team who "lets up" on a team late in a game.

First half.  Day has been using these blowouts to get the 2nd and 3rd groups snaps.  As mentioned earlier, 71 of the 74 players that traveled to Rutgers played in the game.

Hans't Justin Fields played just about the same number of snaps as Patterson this year (with Patterson probably playing slightly more snaps in light of the early season tight games in which both teams still had 1st team out there... which are not part of our common opponents)?

How many snaps has Paterson played?  Fields has 600.   I would expect Fields to have more snaps per minute as the offense has been efficient and the defense gets off the field.

Hasn't Dobbins had about the same number of snaps as Michigan's top two RBs (Charbonnet and Haskins) combined?

Dobbins has 455 snaps, MT III has 219 - so 674.  Dobbins is clearly the starter here.  I don't see this as a shared load situation.  Dobbins is the clear #1.  That said, MT III has been impressive and in the last few weeks has been getting carriers earlier and earlier in the game.

Wouldn't the teams OSU is facing also pull their starters about the same time as OSU?

Not from what I have observed. It appears to me that the opposing teams have been using those snaps to get game experience.

There is no reason to think UM keeps its starters in football games longer AFTER backups for the other team come in. (I guess you could day that Shea threw a TD to a third stringer late in the MSU game... but we all know that was an anomaly... and I doubt Dantonio puled his starters early in that game.)

I don't think OSU starters have seen backups this year.  It stands to reason that he closer the game the more apt both sides are to play their starters longer/exclusively.

IN FACT, I would say that the propensity for OSU to be aggressive about adding points, combined with the fact that their starting QB and starting RB have played just about the same number of snaps as ours DESPITE blowing teams out..... actually indicates the OPPOSITE could be true and that OSU may be padding its stats by keeping its 1st team in longer than a team (like UM) would do.

What makes you think the QB and RB positions have played the same number of snaps?  Either way I'd think the percentage of overall snaps would be a more telling comparison.

Fields 600/785 = .764

Dobbins 455/744 = .611

No snark here - I would honestly find it interesting if you/the board has a source to find comparable snap stats for Michigan.  Snap counts for OSU found here: https://www.elevenwarriors.com/ohio-state-football/2019/11/109098/snap-counts-71-ohio-state-players-see-game-action-in-buckeyes-56-21-win-at-rutgers

IMO it mostly depends on your internet connection/stability.

Do you have kids/gamers in the house sucking up the throughput?  Maybe not the best for you.  Do you understand how your router works and can set up priority/etc. or buy enough throughput it doesn't matter then YouTubeTV may be for you

We have a solid internet connection and are much happier with YouTubeTV.    Besides the standard viewing we found an economical Roku TV (Insignia).   I drag it on the back porch and watch baseball games outside.   Plug it in, connects to wifi ... watch whatever.  Toss around a baseball or football between innings or at half-time.  Love it.  Even my 15 year old will come out of the basement to watch baseball and cook stuff over a campfire.   Neighbors see the glow and stop by with beer.

Go to a local watering hole and they don't have the game on, stream it on your phone.

You can generally find a week or longer trial - give it a go.

UTTV ($/50mo) w/ Roku and 100MB internet ($70/mon) replaced $180/mon TWC/Spectrum.  Much happier.  Roku TV's are cheap - can pull one out to the back porch and watch baseball, etc. around a campfire. UUTV is also nice when you are traveling.

It's a chance for the coaches to game plan and the players to compete.

Top talent at an institution like Michigan only gets maybe a dozen chances *in their entire college career* to play prep and play against another team on a similar plane with regards to results, resources, and talent.  If that is meaningless to you, go fishing for the afternoon.  It is highly meaningful for the development of the players and the program.
