Your favorite piece of Michigan Memorabilia
So this is my first year since I started working here full-time when I might be able to afford things other than necessities and debt. Suck it poverty line!
As I contemplate what bit of Michigan schlock worth disposing my first disposable income (leaning toward a Jug replica) I thought about how much interesting stuff this community has probably accumulated. Share what you've got; I'll display the coolest in Dear Diary tomorrow.
I would use that constantly. I would make up reasons to toast things as much as possible.
If you're not going to use it, give it to me.
Damn, you are missing out. I have the block M brand for searing steaks. That thing is an absolute must for football Saturdays.

I was born in Columbus, OH on the day of the 1983 "The Game" at around 9am. My dad tells me that the first thing we did together was watch Michigan beat OSU from the hospital while my mom was in recovery. After growing up in Columbus for 18 years, I went to Michigan and my sister followed in my footsteps two years later. For my 30th birthday, she got me an original program from the 1983 "The Game" which I apparently watched when I was not more than three hours old.

My dad has a brick from Yost Arena when they were doing some remodeling. Just grabbed one off the ground when we were walking past it.

First, some back story. My grandparents got season tickets in the early 1970s and my family still has them all these years later. They started bringing me to games when I could barely walk, which was during Anthony Carter's final season. My cousin and I were the same age and they would bring us to games in our toddler #1 jerseys and we loved AC. Those happen to be my initials and my cousin's first name is Anthony. I still wear a #1 jersey to games today and I intentionally don't want a name on the back because I think the jersey is bigger than any individual great player who has worn it - even more so than the other legacy jerseys.
I've been attending games ever since and graduated from Michigan in 1997 - right after the national championship. A few years ago my younger brother was working at an event with some former players. He got Anthony Carter and Braylon Edwards to both sign the same football. It sits in my Michigan themed basement in a place of honor on the mantle above the TV.
My ideal scenario would be to find a way to get other wearers of the #1 jersey to sign it also. In order, I'd like to get:
- McMurtry (he wore it when I was old enough to start remembering games)
- Alexander
- Funchess
- Terrell
- Butterfield
In all seriousness, if anyone on the board knows of a way to get any of those autographs, I would greatly appreciate the suggestion.

I was 11 years old, Michigan was playing Indiana I believe, Marlin Jackson signed his armband and threw it to me. Still have it in my room to this day.

i have stacks of michigan dailys and such from when I was in school (96-00)... I have detroit free press from 92 or so on to that point...
I have a cool kelly baraka recruiting recount from the paper... that should probably be rolled up about now...

I was at the '69 game (and also at the '68 (50-14) loss)
I was living in Chicago area in 1969. Saw a local artist with a painting like this of Notre Dame. Asked him if he would do one for me of Michigan. He agreed. I gave him some old football programs, pointed out the things I wanted and he made this collage. He arbitraily numbered the central figure "88" (It was Jim Mandich's number). Upper left is my ticket from "The Greatest Game" - Upper right is the Chicago Tribune write up on the '69 game ("Someone forgot to tell Michigan that Ohio State was the greatest team of all time"). Pictures include Ufer, Bo, Willam Revelli,Bob Timberlake, Ron Kramer, MMB & Michigan cheerleaders (all male) - Kipke, Crisler, Oosterbaan, Elliot and Bo together. Other pictures in the collage include the Little Brown jug, Rex Kern being dropped by the defense and more. No. 56 in a little picture near the bottom is Dick Caldarazzo, who played on the 69 team and who has become a friend.
I used to own an original leather Michigan helmet, but have since sold it...

I have a maize block M hat signed by Bo and Don Canham. I have all the media paraphenalia from 97' but the hat is my prized possesion. It's going in the box with me when I'm gone.

Probably one of my finest relationship moments also gave me my favorite piece of memorabilia. When I got engaged I mentioned that it was kind of a bummer that she got to show a ring off but the guy gets pretty much nothing to represent the commitment we were about to make to each other. I then dropped the idea that an authentic Michigan helmet signed by Charles Woodson was a third of the cost of the ring so it wouldn't even be that much of a burden. That thing looks glorious on the shelf.
The wife deserves some credit for being amazing I suppose as well.

First, a ticket stub from the 1964 Michigan-Navy game. It was the second game of the season, and #8/9 Michigan beat #6/5 Navy 21-0. Michigan went on to a 9-1 season, winning the Big Ten and the Rose Bowl along the way, with the only loss a 21-20 nail-biter to Bob Griese's #5 Purdue.
Next, the October 30, 1950 issue of Life magazine, which contained a photo essay by legendary photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt. You've almost assuredly seen his most famous photo "V-J Day in Times Square" of a sailor kissing a nurse at the end of World War II. In 1950, Eisenstaedt chronicled the Michigan Marching Band's journey to New York City to perform at the Michigan-Army game at Yankee Stadium. #18 Michigan fell to #1 Army 27-6.
Following the musical vein, a piece of piano sheet music from 1904 entitled "Men of Yost," a little-known march dedicated to the great Point-a-Minute teams of 1901-1904.
I also have tome relics of the three great stadiums/arenas at Michigan. An original California redwood seat that was in Michigan Stadium from 1927 until the 1990s (they were covered with vinyl covers in the 1960s but the wood was still underneath), a brick from Yost that fell off during a heavy snowstorm when I was a student, and a row number from Crisler that fell off the seat I was sitting in during the 2011 NCAA Selection Show.
Before they started manufacturing Little Brown Jug repicas, the only way to have one was to make your own, so about 5 years ago I did just that. Mine is a 3-gallon jug (the real one is 5 gallons) and recently updated with the new score column and the last few scores.
And finally, probably the most unusual piece of UM memorabilia I own, given to me by one of my groomsmen when I got married. It's from a book written by a UM geology professor right after World War I about why, in his opinion, the war broke out. But what makes it unique is who owned this particular copy. The author inscribed it to him.
"To Fielding H. Yost, With the best regards of Wm H. Hobbs, Ann Arbor, Oct 3, 1922."

I have a framed "plate" from the 1989 NCAA basketball tournament that is signed by Steve Fisher. It looks fantastic hanging on my MICHIGAN wall at my home at Boyne City!! I love it!!

I was fortunate enough to be able to eat dinner with Desmond a few years ago at a fund raiser that he was speaking at. In the process, I managed to get my pic with him, my Michigan hat signed and best of all, I was able to talk football with one of the greats!
Have a personalized signed helmet on the right tip of the helmet. Great convo piece, but not sure why the GF won't let me keep it in the kitchen. Crazy wench.

I'm not much for "stuff," but I am a big fan of jerseys. My favorite Michigan object is unquestionably my game-worn dazzle maize script hockey jersey (originally property of freshman defenseman Tim Cook, still has his name and number on it) that I won in the jersey auction after the 03-04 season. Modeled here at the second game of the Michigan-Minnesota series at Mariucci this winter.

The dazzle maize jerseys with the script, both in the title years and the era that I am wearing here, are by far my favorites. Which is why I went to the expense of purchasing one, back when I had extra money.
An autographed Charles Woodson collecter card from the Detroit News. I idolized Woodson growing up and my grandpa saved this out of the paper for me. I'll never forget I thought it was the coolest thing when he got bought a protective sleeve so I could hang it on the wall without putting a hole in it or anything sticky on the back. Little did I, or he, know that almost 18 years later I would get to meet Woodson and get him to sign it. The first thing I did after was drive straight to his house to show him the autograph and tell him all about getting to meet Woodson.
picked up this signed Bo print off craigslist from a lady selling her husband's collection because they got divorced. I haven't been able to find one for sale on ebay or anywhere else. Anyone have any info on this? Sorry for the sideways pic, not sure why it flipped like that.

Bo signed his book with Mitch Albom for me. It was my first and only meeting with him. He was very kind and friendly. It was a wonderful 2 minutes to chat with him.
A spartan friend of my dad's saw Greg at a B10 function and asked for an autograph, knowing my dad would appreciate it. My dad gave it to me before he passed away.
See, not all spartans are jerks, just most of them.
I also have my replica #4 away jersey from when Jim Harbaugh was QB at Michigan. It's a little more authentic than a typical jersey in that the shoulders are sized to accommodate shoulder pads, but it's real narrow at the waist. It's too small to fit my 11 year old, so I just keep it in the closet.
I also kept my Rose Bowl ticket stub from the game we lost to Vince Young and Texas, but mostly Vince Young. That would be higher on my list if we actually won the game.
I have a photograph of 5 Michigan coaches (Bo, Bump, Benny, Fritz and Kipke) with all of their autographs.
I also have the 1927 program from the first game at Michigan Stadium.

...but I have a signed Bo picture in my living room. Every night when I go to bed I get a glass of water from the kitchen (cuz I'm not a freak who gets driking water from the bathroom) and I walk back past him with a little "Goodnight Bo" every, single night I spend at home.
