Hit the nail exactly!

abc coverage

abc seems so intent on having crowd noise they are drowning out the announcers...

Greatest Game in Michigan History!

I was there - it was sweet. Didn't want to leave the stadium.

I also was at the game in Columbus the previous year and had to go to a party afterwards... All I heard was Rex Kern, Jim Otis, Jack Tatum - they were going to kill us in Ann Arbor.

17 point underdogs at home! Ohio State unanimous No. 1 - They never trailed in a game all year, and everyone had written us off.

Chicago Tribune story lead after the game - "Someone forgot to tell Michigan that Ohio State was the greatest team of all times..."

Don't know if I will ever see another one like that one - 1998 Rose Bow (National Champions) was close.

Bye bye...

Pretty sad, one sided refereeing...

Just read in the Chicago Trib that Gonzaga had 36 free throw attempts, Northwestern had 13... So it probably wasn't just the blown goal tending call that set coach Collins off...

Paul Goebel

I used to live in Grand Rapids when Paul Goebel was mayor. This story was told to me by many University of Michigan friends and fans: (from Wikipedia)

Paul Goebel played a role in a famous Ohio State-Illinois game on November 13, 1943. The game was Paul Brown's last game as coach of the Buckeyes. With the score tied 26-26, Ohio State threw an incomplete forward pass into the end zone as the gun sounded. The game appeared to have ended in a tie, the teams left the field, and the stands emptied. However, Ohio State assistant coach Ernie Godfrey had noticed Goebel, who was the head linesman, drop a handkerchief to signal a penalty. On hearing the gun sound, Goebel had picked up the handkerchief and put it back in his back pocket thinking the game had ended. Godfrey talked to Goebel, who said that Illinois was offsides. Twenty minutes later, the teams came back onto the field and the Buckeyes kicked a 33-yard field goal to give Coach Brown a 29-26 win in his final game

Bob Ufer

My brother was a Phi Delt in the late 50s. Phi Delta Theta had a lot of ex-scholarship football players on those mud bowl teams. I am pretty sure my brother told me that Ufer was a Phi Delt alum...

52-6 Michigan

Michigan finally kicks a field goal, 7 touchowns.. late Illinois score and they fail on 2 point try

MICHIGAN 52

Illinois 6

Hilarious!

Thank you so much for posting. This is the best thread since the fake dying guy during the punt!

Could not stop laughing!

Jim Betts - Dick Caldarazzo

Jim and Dick were members of those first years of Bo's reign. I became friends with these two men in the late 70s, early 80s. Great men, both of them members of great teams.

Jim is now working for the athletic department as a liaison with ex Michigan athletes. He is a first class act, and a great representative of Michigan athletics. Jim is mentioned prominently in Bo's first book "Man in Motion".

"Caldo" is now a respected lawyer in the Chicago area. At Michigan, Dick was the starting guard, playing next to Dan Dierdorf on the Michigan line.

Both of these guys were part of "The Greatest Win in MIchigan History" (my opinion) - 1969's, 24-12 upset of  "The Greatest College football team of all Time". I was at that game and still cannot explain the joy I still recall from that day. (I was also at THE game the year before that we lost 14-50).

I am proud to call both of these men my friend!

I'm really old but...

Nothing will ever match Michigan - Ohio State 1969. Tom Moorehead, Jim Mandich, Garvie Craw and the entire Michigan offense and defense rise up and defeat "...the Greatest College Football Team of all time"  24-12. We were 18 point underdogs in our own stadium. What made it even sweeter was the fact that I was at the 1968 game in Columbus that we lost 50-14 (Woody tried to score a 2 point conversion after their last touchdown - it failed.) Woody later admitted that this was the worst defeat of his entire career.

This board is hilarious!

I think I up-voted almost every post above!

Made me laugh!

I was at the NCAA basketball finals in 1976 in Philadelphia. There was lull in the semi-final pre-game action for the game between Rutgers and Michigan. Someone behind me yelled: "...What the Hell is a Rutgers, anyway?" The audience (on the Michigan side anyway) erupted in laughter.

Was that you?

My favorite Gordie Howe story

I grew up in the '50s. It was always the Red Wings and the Canadians for the Stanley Cup. All the other teams were after-thoughts.

Howe was known as "the toughest man" in the league. Lou Fontanato (sp?) of the New York Rangers decided to take Howe on... BIG MISTAKE. Fontanato tried to board Gordie, they both dropped their gloves and went at it. Gordie had huge hands and grabbed both of Fontanato's jersey sleeves and just wailed on him. A sports writer stated: "...way up in the press box, it sounded like someone was chopping wood down on the ice!" Life magazine at that time always had a "picture of the week", and that week it was a picture of Fontanato coming off of the ice after the encounter - he was bleeding profusely and his nose was completely bent off to the right. Nobody messed with Gordie without paying eventually.

He was the GREATEST! He will be missed.

Agree completly

He was a tough litle guy. I remember the Michigan - MSU game when he totally handled All American Tony Mandarich.

I lived in Chicago area then, and when they announced their All Big Ten team, a sportswriter would write a comment about each player. THe comment about Messner was something like: "at the end of the Michigan-MSU game it was Mandarich throwing up in the tunnel and it was Messner walking tall..."

Autographs

Contact Jim Betts at the Michigan athletic deartment. His job is liaison with former athletes. He could be able to help you. He is a friend of mine - Ken VanderPloeg

1969 Memories!

I was at the '69 game (and also at the '68 (50-14) loss)

I was living in Chicago area in 1969. Saw a local artist with a painting like this of Notre Dame. Asked him if he would do one for me of Michigan. He agreed. I gave him some old football programs, pointed out the things I wanted and he made this collage. He arbitraily numbered the central figure "88" (It was Jim Mandich's number). Upper left is my ticket from "The Greatest Game" - Upper right is the Chicago Tribune write up on the '69 game ("Someone forgot to tell Michigan that Ohio State was the greatest team of all time"). Pictures include Ufer, Bo, Willam Revelli,Bob Timberlake, Ron Kramer, MMB & Michigan cheerleaders (all male)  - Kipke, Crisler, Oosterbaan, Elliot and Bo together. Other pictures in the collage include the Little Brown jug, Rex Kern being dropped by the defense and more. No. 56 in a little picture near the bottom is Dick Caldarazzo, who played on the 69 team and who has become a friend.

I used to own an original leather Michigan helmet, but have since sold it...

Great article!

Thanks for posting this.

Does anyone know what time

The practice sessions open to the public will be? I am in New Port Richey (just North of Tampa)

NCAA rules
83.3
Scoring a Goal
- A
goal is scored when the puck, initially propelled legally
by a stick of a player of the attacking team, passes between the goal posts,
entering from the front and below the top of the net, and completely crosses

the goal line, with the goal frame in its proper position.

83.5
Goal Cage Dislodged -
In the event that the
goal post is displaced, either
deliberately or accidentally, by a defending player, prior to the puck
crossing the goal line between the normal position of the goalposts, the
Referee may award a goal.
In order to award a goal in this situation, the goal post must have been
displaced by the actions of a defending player, the puck must have been shot
(or the player must be in position to shoot) at the goal prior to the goal post
being displaced, and it must be determined that the puck would have entered
the net between the normal position of the goal posts.

When the goal post has been displaced deliberat

Hockey Rules

(a) A goal shall be scored when the puck has completely crossed the goal line between the posts and under the cross bar. The  who has legally propelled the puck into the opponent’s goal (or last attacking to play the puck in cases where the puck entered the goal as a result of the actions of the defending team) shall be credited with the scoring of the goal.

WTF??? This is a basic rule!

Brian Bennet of ESPN

Hits the nail on the head:

"But mostly, this is simply a Harbaugh issue. Just like most coaches won't be copying his sleepovers at recruits' houses, very few, if any, schools would invest in these types of lavish spring trips. Ultimately, Harbaugh gets the last laugh by so easily getting under SEC schools' skins -- and duping them into giving him free publicity."

How can you...

Not love this coach? We are so fortunate he came back.

73-68

Michigan 73 - MSU 68

Hockey:

Michigan 6 - MSU 3

Michigan 5 - MSU 2

I am old, but I just love this board!

The comments above are hilarious! Thanks!

Michigan 24 - The Greatest College team of all time - 12

1969 (I'm a lot older than most of you...) I was in Columbus in 1968 and watched Woody try for 2 points after putting 50 on us. Revenge was more than sweet... Still  THE GREATEST WIN in Michigan football history!

Penalty should have been more than one game...

That was a very blatent foul - with intent to harm.

Thanks.

This is great. Everyone likes to "look back".

Perfect analogy

Thank you!

Thank you!

Very well explained. Thanks.

I lived in Downers Grove...

for about 35 years before I moved to Florida.

This is sad, since this young man has always been a Michigan fan. I sent a newspaper clipping to Brian when Erik was a young man (he was about 13 and a big kid, and a huge Michigan fan - you can look it up).

The timing of this is terrible and I really feel sorry for him - but I hope he succeeds wherever he ends up.

I think I recall...

The Stanford Band once did a half time show called "A salute to the human reproductive system..." and of course had some band movements that were not universally well received (but probably anatomically correct...) I think it resulted in suspension of the band for a few games.

I remember seeing them in Ann Arbor and they had a violin in their band. Yesterday they had a guy playing? a stop sign, and another playing a kitchen sink - part of the percussion section.

I find them hilarious!

Our linebackers were awful

Continually out of position, and when they were in position could not tackle... our defensive linemen could not shed blocks and could not penetrate... I don't remember Henry's name being called all day.

Still a successful season! Just didn't end the way we wanted...

Last time was 1974

Lantry missed? the winning field goal. I will never go back there. Their fan base is the worst. F Michigan bombs everywhere we walked. (Wish I had been there in 1976 when Michigan beat their ass 22-0)

Wisconsin fans have always treated me fine.

A GREAT video

Been a Michigan fan for a long, long, long time. This really captures the rivalry.

Perfect!

Why mess with the most iconic helmet in football!

Which Columbus car dealer

Gave Barrett the car he was driving?

Apology coming...

The Big Ten will probably issue another apology to Michigan on Monday or Tuesday... The replay official should be terminated.

Fantastic write-up!

Thank you very much. That was great writing, and even better reading...

Thank you!

This is very much appreciated - Thanks!

Michigan Monday

Gerdman is still a fun read...

Makes me laugh!

This is why I love this blog.  A lot of you guys are hilarious!

It was a crummy call...

something a B1G official would call... just unexplainable.
