Meet the Parents
I was just thinking about that this morning. I need to watch 1917 again, also The Imitation Game and Life is Beautiful.
Saving Private Ryan
The opening is unforgettable of course, the rest of the movie is pure Hollywood cheese war movie. It probably could have been the undisputed best ever if Spielberg and Hanks had a fact based story to tell like they did with BoB.
Fury
Great flick seen it 3 or 4 times
One of those movies where I stop flipping through the channels and settle in when it’s on.
I recently read "Death Traps" which provided some of the scenes in Fury. It was written by Belton Y. Cooper who was a University of Michigan ROTC Engineering student when the war broke out. It definitely reads like an engineers maintence log turned into a story but I found it interesting. One of the best books I read from the perspective of someone who was there.
Schindler's List...
I've seen 1917 posted a couple of times already, and I'll agree that it was one helluva movie. Beautifully shot - it deserved every award it got...
I watched Schindler's List for the first time about 5-6 months ago. I can't believe I waited that long. Truly a difficult movie to watch, but a great one as well.
Ralph Fiennes' portrayal of Amon Goeth was so well done. Hard to truly admire it because you know how despicable of a human being his character was, but Fiennes was brilliant in the role.
Spectacular movie. I just rewatched recently also. It’s such an emotional investment to commit to knowing how it’s going to make you feel but very easy to get sucked into.
I took a date to see that movie in high school.
Turns out, not a great date movie.
It was for Jerry Seinfeld
Beautifully shot and one of the best sounding films I have ever watched. Whoever mixed the sound for that one got it right.
One film only? I’ll respond with a great quote from that film:
You have to think about one shot. One shot is what it's all about. The deer has to be taken with one shot. I try to tell people that - they don't listen.
"This is this. This ain't something else. This is this."
Ernest Goes To Camp
Gonna jack a few jaws
For the right “turn your brain off with a beer” moment: Aliens 2.
[Jerk male space marine to only female marine]: “Have you ever been mistaken for a man?”
[female marine]: “No, have you?”
Full Metal Jacket.
Too buku!
So far this "break", watched Apocalypse Now, Dr. Strangelove, Saving Private Ryan, and Casablanca.
Full Metal Jacket would be next on the list
One of the best! Too many one liners to count.
Predator
Star Wars
While Casablanca may not include any battlefield scenes, it gets my vote.
Platoon or All Quiet on the Western Front.
Bridge on the River Kwai
Brilliant movie.
A lot of great movies have been checked in this thread. But there can be only one. And it is Bridge on the River Kwai.
”What have I done?”
OP had the right answer: Patton
On the other end of the spectrum: dr. Strangelove.
My dad was in the Third Army. He thought the real Patton was an asshole. George C Scott’s acting was brilliant, however.
Can’t remember which book I read it in, but the story of Patton sending an ill-fated rescue party to retrieve his pow son-in-law soured me a bit on the story of the man I thought I knew.
The Longest Winter: The Battle of the Bulge and the Epic Story of World War II's Most Decorated Platoon by Alex Kershaw.
One the best WWII books I ever read. Lots of side stories with cross-reference stories involving Kurt Vonnegut (next brigade to north) and also Patton. Or Rick Atkinson's Guns at Last Light leads you to see that many generals have significant faults. Patton's failed rescue of his son-in-law was a tremendous disaster. But if you want to hear more about Patton's faults and strengths you might watch Victor Davis Hanson talk about Patton on YouTube at a recent Hillsdale lecture.
The Siege.
There are parallels to the current situation to an extent.
SciFi- War Movie: The Last Star Fighter.
War War Movie: Tora Tora Tora
The "Death Blossom" scene was a childhood favorite for me.
The Enemy Below with Robert Mitchum and Curd Jurgens.
I highly recommend this movie from 1957.
That's a great one, especially as part of a double feature with Run Silent, Run Deep (1958) with Clark Gable and Burt Lancaster.
Watched this one about a week ago...again. Great cat and mouse movie...incidentally it was the inspiration for a Star Trek episode with Kirk and a cloaked Romulan in a similar situation
I second this recommendation. Good movie with two solid actors in the leads - both of whom were in "The Longest Day" five years later.
Inglourious Basterds or Tropic Thunder
You and I would get along very well.
Stripes, released 1981.
"Army training, sir!!"
Love this movie, have the DVD.
The longest day or the green berets
My father who was there repeatedly said the best movie on the European front of WWII was The Longest Day.
Outside of Europe in WWII, another vote for Bridge over the River Kwai.
Paths of Glory (1957)
The Shutdown Fullcast has never told a joke, Michigan Dad is War Dad
Apocalypse Now
Apocalypse Now and it's not even close for me.
