Wow, new era: starting Notre Dame QB enters portal
I understand that he was replacing an injured starter, but a guy who just completed 23 of 26 passes against USC on one of the biggest stages in college football....is entering the portal.

A ton of tampering I would guess. I've even seen some schools trying to get DJU from Clemson for next year. Sure, he hasn't played well, but trying to take CLEMSON'S starting QB without a coaching change sounds crazy.

If it's a very quick trip through the portal and then what-do-you-know I'm going to... I would bet one of Brian's dollars to say there was tampering.
That said, I'm sure Cade agreed on where to land before jumping into the portal.

I hope you're right. I would think less of his judgment if he leaped first.

Word is that Buchner is healthy and practicing, and is slated to play in their bowl
So I'd guess this a case of pushing rather than pulling

No clue what they see in that kid.
December 2nd, 2022 at 6:03 PM ^
Buchner seemed worse than Pyne in his two games.

Cade may've pulled the Hawkeye trigger too quickly.

correct

Can he change his mind?

McNamara went to a school that wanted him and was willing to commit to him as the starter. I doubt there were too many of those. It’s unlikely Notre Dame was one of them.
December 2nd, 2022 at 2:22 PM ^
I half expected Cade to land in South Bend. Thought that would be a nice match for him. I still would’ve rooted for him to be successful there, but it would’ve sucked having to root for ND to be successful.

I don't think Tommy Rees should ever scream "Do your fucking job!" at a player.
December 2nd, 2022 at 3:01 PM ^
Trying to imitate Tom Brady is a bad look.
December 2nd, 2022 at 2:27 PM ^
Wonder if Cade wishes he had waited a day.
December 2nd, 2022 at 3:19 PM ^
What makes you think Notre Dame wanted McNamara?

A guy that took Michigan to a place we hadn't been in a long/ever is also transferring. Shit is different now. And I don't blame them.
Pretty amazing experience to be bmoc in multiple spots

Saying their starting QB is disingenuous. Tyler Buchner was their starter and he got injured. Pyne came in and was decent. I'm assuming that Buchner is the presumed starter when he comes back and Pyne thinks he played well enough to transfer to start somewhere else

One thing that I think will be incredibly fascinating is smaller time players who blow up early in their first year or two parlaying that into big time NIL money from bigger schools for their junior/senior years. I could see a big feeder system where smaller schools act as a screening system for misranked players coming out of HS.

NIL and Transfer Portal are ruining the game... Compounded by a 12 team play off.
December 2nd, 2022 at 2:59 PM ^
Completely disagree. I love all of it.
December 2nd, 2022 at 8:19 PM ^
I would love it a hell of a lot more if Michigan started accepting transfer credits.

Amateurism has been a sham for several decades (always?). Everyone else is raking in money from this billion dollar industry. So why shouldn't the players be able to make some money for themselves?
The transfer portal (along with early signing) probably needs some revamping, but not necessarily a complete overhaul, and definitely not removal.
And a 12 team playoff will be better than what we have, in no small part because half of the spots will be guaranteed for conference champs. Getting rid of conference championship games, and forcing conferences to be smaller (neither of which is happening anytime soon) are the only things that could make a 12 team system better.

Counterpoint - no it isn't. A guy realizes he wasn't going to get a fair shot competing for the starting spot next year so he left instead of being forced to go through a dog-and-pony show and then have to sit out a year to transfer.
Also, and I can't stress this enough, the playoffs merely give more teams a chance to actually compete for something as opposed to being shunted off to a meaningless bowl game that nets guys in suits millions of dollars and gives fans the right to complain about unpaid athletes not wanting to risk serious injury to make that money for them.

I know people are making a lot around this but ND's QB spot has been bad all year and there was talk of Freeman bringing in multiple transfers and recruits to compete. Pyne completing 23 of 26 vs. USC is more an indictment of USC's defense than proof he's a high-level QB.
He'll land somewhere but this is more a guy realizing he was going to lose his job and figuring it wasn't worth being in a sham competition.
December 2nd, 2022 at 4:12 PM ^
Pyne is really just a guy, probably a career backup at any above-average P5 school, so his transfer really doesn't mean much. He can start at a lower-tier school.
December 2nd, 2022 at 7:12 PM ^
But, but ND has the highest academic restrictions east of Stanford! How can they accept transfers?

One game doesn't mean much, he really wasn't good. Wonder if Cade would have been an option if he hadn't already committed to Iowa.
December 2nd, 2022 at 4:36 PM ^
Had you spent as much time in South Bend as he has, you'd look for an escape portal too
December 2nd, 2022 at 4:54 PM ^
Iowa be like, dang.

Bama should be paying $12m for NC QB. This is the way. If you are successful in your first 2 years a lot of these guys will be free agents. And take the high bid.
