Nah, it’s not like they did anything offensive to a big part of the UM old fan base, like advocate for civil or LGBT rights.

Mr. Brightside became an organic tradition in part because of its dubious origins - i.e., being the only entertaining part of the fucking miserable 2017 MSU game.  I personally like it because it's spiritually a song about BPONE and really does capture the zeigeist of Michigan fandom for the better part of, well, since the song came out in 2004.  To me, it acknowledges and owns our collective nerdy angst but channels it into something fun and joyous.  Its literally taking a sad song and making it better.

Now, I get that this opinion isn't shared with several people here and that your disagreement is seen and is valid - in other words, I won't cancel you (or Brandon Flowers) over it :)  But, regardless, something about the song resonates with enough of the fanbase that it will probably stick around in a way that contrived shit like Freekbass didn't.

That headline is misleading.

If he really was supporting Russia then yes -- but he was trying to stop the crowd from booing a kid with a flag and essentially saying, "don't hate him we're all human" (or are we dancers?)

This is a non-event.

Don't get the downvotes on this. I didn't know about this story and now I do, so I'm glad it was posted. Maybe the title could have been less inflammatory though

No, not over this. This was not some orchestrated event based on a controversial stance. It was just some singer from a band trying to do a "Give peace a chance" thing and it turns out he was pretty ignorant about how it would go over. Nothing to see here. (And I'm not minimizing the history between the two countries, I'm commenting on what happened at the concert venue). As for the song, my son recently turned me on to Greta Van Fleet and I wouldn't mind hearing one of their songs in the stadium to get things going. Like I could see the beginning of Highway Tune stoking the Michigan fanbase.

I'm not hugely attached to the song, and I am not a fan of the Killers really, but I don't know what this 'incident' in Batumi has to do with what we play in Michigan Stadium. Nobody in America gives a damn about this incident.

I mean, also saying that we're all human beings, brothers and sisters, regardless of race and nationality seems like one of the least controversial statements to possibly make, even if in this instance Mr. Flowers appears to have underestimated the heated nature of national and ethnic conflicts in that part of the world.

"Coming out of my cage, and I’ve been doing just fine…."

I see no reason to let go of Mr Brightside - it gets the entire stadium going.

The opener is almost here.

If people are so stupid to think that everyone existing in a country is aligned with every decision their country's government makes, then yes.  But if you've interacted with another human being and also have 2 brain cells to rub together you'll understand that governments go to war with each other and commit atrocities not private citizen who are just trying to eat, shit, have some sex, pursue a few dreams and live their lives. Despite that, some people like the idea of bigger, more powerful central governments who based on empirical evidence tend to abuse that power and become corrupt. So . . . "no" who gives a shit.  It's a song and none of this matters in the grand scheme of things. Go hug your loved ones or do something you enjoy instead of giving one micro second of thought to this non-controversy.

Why would we care if the guy is Russian?

I don’t think the Mr. Brightside thing has ever been cool but this is a big nothing. Complete abstract ethnic discrimination is never acceptable.

Having been born during the Truman administration and still living in a rock 'n' roll world, I wasn't introduced to The Killers until one of my sons bought the Hot Fuss CD when it came out around the time of his birthday in 2004.

I wasn’t a fan of the band and didn’t know the origin story of Mr. Brightside having become a Michigan football song until fairly recently. I’m okay with Mr. Brightside as long as Michigan students are okay with it, but I’ve always wondered why Michigan football fans couldn’t have been using an upbeat song by Ann Arbor's Pioneer High School alum Bob Seger like The Fire Inside or Detroit Made to get fans excited.

If Michigan football fans had to use a song performed in concert by The Killers, then I suppose that there’s always this one.

Fuck Putin. And anyone who supports him. And anyone who is fighting his dirty war directly or indirectly

Killers’ contribution to Michigan football belongs now to the ages and cannot be diminished by anything anybody says.
