Why doesn’t Justin Fields even have an offer from U of M?

So I am hoping to get some input on this, not to create controversy or piss people off.  We ask about the gap in talent all the time.  How is that Justin Fields doesn’t even have an offer from U of M?  How can we expect to make up the gap in talent when we are not even offering players with his skill set?  I understand we may not land a ton of these guys but we should at least try right?

Absolutely true.

Athletes at M do not meet the same admission standards you or I had to.

They're not morons as such.  But I'll bet you there are sub 3.0 HS GPAs on the football team.  Which is fine; not judging.  Anything above the NCAA-minimum (which I think is 2.5) meets the standard.

Being accepted and being able to handle the work are two different things.  Sure, Kareem Walker and Aubry Solomon were accepted.  Neither could handle the academic workload.  Doesn't mean they're stupid, or have some learning disability.  It means they couldn't handle the academic workload, for whatever reason.

Is this why Fields wasn't offered?  Probably not.  So many things go into it - academics, payments, QB type, personalities...  Maybe Fields grew up not liking Michigan?  Who knows?  But Michigan offers a bunch of quality players each year, most decide not to come to UM.  Some do...

(Edit: It was generally discussed that Solomon had academic issues - I do not know if this is true.)

You're posting with an emotional response rather than a fact based one.

Michigan accepts student athletes with GPAs and SAT/ACT scores LESS THAN the regular undergraduate population.  That's NOT up for debate.

Get over it.  We're not the Ivy league which doesn't give out athletic scholarships.  Our student athletes do get exceptions made for them.

Fields has offers from Harvard, Northwestern, and Yale but can’t make the cut at Michigan? This is the issue with your fan base lol.

Michigan recruits the same kids Florida, Ohio State and Alabama recruit. If you think the football players at Michigan have the same experience and standards as the regular student body...your delusional or just lying to yourself.

This is why the country laughs, because you all still think it’s the ‘50s. Michigan isn’t even that clean of a program...they are a football factory like most of the other power 5!!

You’re not wrong. People forget (or choose to ignore) that Harbaugh was enemy #1 at one point in time while at Stanford. He openly criticized Michigan for their academic standards and for steering players to general studies with easy classes so they could maintain eligibility.

Mike Hart had some choice words for Harbaugh back then. He said Harbaugh wasn’t a Michigan Man and he wished he had never played there. We have people on here wondering why Harbaugh didn’t offer him a position on the staff.

Rashan Gary got a 9 on the Wonderlic which is essentially functionally retarded.

Do you honestly not realize that Michigan has the same reduced admission standards as every other school?  Are you really that delusional?

Michigan plays by the same rules as everyone else.

Ohio State develops talent.  They get players to the NFL, therefore they get better talent.

While I believe Fields is a solid QB - playing Qb for OSu has to be the easiest job ever.  Everyone looks great until they're in the NFL where OSU has never had a decent QB.  Fields may be the first.

BTW he shouldn't even be eligible this year.

I get it, but it doesn’t answer why he doesn’t even have a offer.  I get they don’t produce NFL qbs, but honestly, I don’t care about NFL qbs.  I care about Michigan winning.  I am proud of all the guys that do make it, but in reality most of the players, including ours, fall short.

To me it does matter.  If we want to constantly look at the gap in talent, but yet there are obviously talented guys that would be an obvious upgrade on our roster doesn’t even get a scholarship offer?  I am really just using him as an example.  But I think it’s valid because it’s the most important position in football.

Because we don’t offer everyone and he’s from Georgia and went to Georgia. Probably because he was Georgia all the way.  He just jumped on an opportunity at OSU and it worked out. An offer isn’t shit unless you put time and money towards the recruitment itself. And if they deemed him as zero interest then they aren’t gonna just offer to offer.

From my understanding, he was originally headed to PSU.  So he was not a Georgia lock.  Plus he was the top dual threat in the country.  Again, not saying we would have got him, but to not even get a scholarship offer.  He had 42 offers.  Obviously we need to change the way we recruit, because the current way is obviously not working.

STFU, this is why we are laughed at constantly by the whole fucking country. Yeah, Ohio State pays every fucking player but we don't. How about the fact that Ryan Day appears to ACTUALLY be a QB whisperer unlike ours. How about the fact he works with the same QB coach as Haskins and Quincy has been on record saying that if he had a son the first coach he would want his son to play for is RYAN FUCKING DAY.

He had 3.9 gpa and at least a 29 on ACT. It’s amazing that every time there is a loss it is either they cheat by paying players (please provide legitimate examples) or kids can’t get into school here. Wisconsin and Penn St don’t have significantly better recruits. Even MSU made the big 10 championship game without same recruits. So is it just anyone better is paying players and accepting any academic bum that can play or is it any team that beats Michigan? It’s really become a sad excuse.
