If Meyer gets canned (and that's a big if), they might name Schiano interim coach and then let him basically audition for the year. If I were an OSU fan, I wouldn't want him, but this is the kind of move ADs like to make.
In terms of who they might poach from elsewhere...not a ton of good candidates out there. They'd try for Herman, but no guarantee he'd leave Texas. Maybe try to coax Stoops out of retirement? Beyond that I don't know...Narduzzi maybe?
Narduzzi doesn't like the spread. He's from Dantonio's powerball school. I can't see him switching to a school where he'd have to rebuild the offense, which would be at least two down years (which OSU fans would scream bloody murder about).
I would absolutely love if it was someone that didn't have ties to the midwest and didn't seemingly care that much about our rivalry. Give them a taste of how it felt with Rich Rod.

So.... Dana Holgorsen?
Wish I could post the cart before horse picture. If Meyer is gone I think he will be missed most as a recruiter. He was able to land top tier players to run his system. It is always easier to truly reload instead of having to go through some growing pains. Meyer was the perfect coach to take over for Tressel and I don’t think it was a coincidence that he was available. Hopefully lighting doesn’t strike twice.
If they have big breakthrough years, Brohm or Fleck.
I doubt Herman leaves Texas. Bob Stoops is also a possibility given his Midwestern ties and somewhat easy transition with the current offensive scheme.
A curveball would be Dantonio. Unlikely but possible. He wouldn’t really need to “build” that program. It’s already built and all the pieces are in place. Especially for his defensive scheme. The QB transition may be tough since Haskins and Martell are not pro style guys (Martell especially), but he could make it work. He’d get more money, better recruits, and would still get to play Michigan every year. He also has worked there before and was their DC on the ‘02 title team.
Dantonio does not like the spread, and has publicly said so. He'd have to rebuild the offense in his image.
Honestly? My guess is an NFL guy who sorta burned out but still wants to coach at a major level and get appropriately. Herman isn't going to leave Texas for OSU at this rate, and big names out there like Stoops have their own sordid history with domestic assault and probably wouldn't want to step into that place. But an NFL guy, with no real college baggage, would see it as an opportunity.
I imagine their list will be prioritized like so:
- Chris Petersen
- Jeff Brohm
- Joe Moorhead
- Charlie Strong
- Kyle Whittingham
I'd bet it all on Brohm, though. He's recruited well and has proven to be quite an offensive mind, much like Urban. Plus, I have to think all the stupid stunts he pulled last year when Michigan played them with the locker room bafoonery and Speight's medical concerns, probably looks very appetizing for a team like OSU.
1. Has zero connections to the Midwest, and a nice gig right now with a team in a nice city, little competition, and less pressure to win.
2. Prime candidate
3. Interesting idea that might work, but needs to have one hell of a year with MSU this year
4. LOL
5. If he hasn't left Utah by now, not sure he ever will.

Hard to see Petersen leaving UW. He could’ve had any job he wanted during his heyday at Boise. Penn State, Michigan, Auburn, Notre Dame, Florida, USC, Texas, I’m betting all of them offered Petersen the job or at least asked him to interview. He opted to stay in the Northwest. I think he stays there.
Brohm and Moorhead would be solid choices but only if they each have big years this year. Moorhead has a lot more to prove. He’d have to go beat Bama and probably win the SEC west to be able to make that jump after one year. If Brohm makes a good jump and gets Purdue to 8-9 wins this year, I could see OSU going after him.
Strong? Yeah good one. Wittingham seems like a lifer at Utah, and my guess is that OSU would want a clean slate and not take a former Meyer apprentice.
If anything happens, it will work out best for OSU. Something that would fit their luck would be Saban leaving Alabama for some god for known reason and ending up at OSU.
So.....my thought is: which recruits do you think we can snap up when the rats start jumping ship?
Maybe his time as a HC has jumped the shark, but Jim McIlwain?

Who Cares
Someone who will never lose to Michigan, because even when bad things happen to them nothing bad actually happens.
This might be the greatest thread ever! Please happen! Anyone they hire can’t be worse for us then Meyer
Luke Fickell
Bo Pelini
Probably the illegitimate son of Bear Bryant and Vince Lombardi.
They aren't firing him.
Prove me wrong, universe!
unless I missed it, how has no one mentioned Kiffin? After last years success he seems like a slam dunk for a school like OSU.
See, I don't get the hype around Kiffin. I didn't think he was that amazing at USC. Good, yes, but not elite.
Lane Kiffen
almost 200 replies and no Nick Frost? Yeah, he's been there for spring ball... Hoping that doesn't happen.

my guess would be a guy from the Saban coaching tree. Oline coach who now coaches Oregon?

Seriously, what scum bag is going to want to coach at buckyville now? That town and school are toxic. Hell, the whole state is toxic. Except a part of Cincinnati because Breezy be playing there.

A lot of people will want to coach there because it's a great football program stacked with talent that owns a fertile recruiting state.
The question is more about what coaches that want to go there are actually good enough to succeed. This would be a weird way for Urban to go down, but they deserve to finally get a guy who is mediocre and suffer through that for a couple of years. It'd be nice if they hired a guy who was either in over his head or well past his prime.

For people saying X won't take the job because X hates the spread, worth noting that Meyer's scheme isn't Chip Kelly's or RR's. The costs of transitioning to a more pro style offense would be lower, especially with Haskins at QB. There would still be costs, just lower costs. I mean, that OL can do power and IZ and they have two excellent RBs.

If Urban gets canned, every single Ohio State coach since World War II has been fired.
Not a single one has left on his own terms in over 70 years:
Bixler 1946 (lasted only one season),
Fesler 1947-1950 (fired after loss to Michigan in the '50 Snow Bowl),
Hayes 1951-1978 (heh),
Bruce 1979-1987 (too many 9-3 seasons),
Cooper 1988-2000 (2-10-1),
Tressel 2001-2010 (tat's all folks),
Fickell 2011 (interim, not renewed),
Meyer 2012-2018 (depends on what the definition of "Paid Administrative Leave" is).
It truly is the Graveyard of Coaches.
I was gonna say Hoke . If they are looking to restore their reputation. Or Richt from Miami . There's also the guy in South Florist who used to be at USC if they are looking at someone to attract talent who may be rehabilitated .
***South Florida. Spellcheck error .
Tressel's show-cause has been up for two years now, and hes only 65 years old.
IF Urban goes, I think Tressel gets the job and brings in Bo Pelini as his DC. Tressel is currently the President of Youngtown St, and Bo Pelini is the head coach there.
