Where does the 2024 Rose Bowl Goal Line Stand rank in Michigan Football History?

Submitted by ThadMattasagoblin on January 2nd, 2024 at 8:41 PM

That has to be up there especially if Michigan wins on January 8th. The only similar moments from the Bo to present era that I can think of are plays from the 1969 OSU game or the Woodson punt return against OSU in 97.

Considering Michigan wins about 15% of their bowl games, each win stands out to me.
Since my sentience in about 1984, we won the RB in 89, 93, 98 and Ill also throw in the 2000 Orange Bowl. So I might put this one after 98, but tied with Bo’s last win in 89, but better than 93 and the Brady Orange Bowl penalty fest.

Amazingly, the "Hurdle" drive lasted 5 plays & ran only maybe a minute plus off the clock!

The runs were a for a 1st down on 1st (clock stops to reset chains); a shorter run (clock runs); another run for a 1st (reset chains); the long run featuring the hurdle; and the TD to make it a 2 score game again.

Very little clock elapsed, but it was an absolute CRUSHER of a drive! Osu had nothing left in the tank, knowing they couldn't stop Michigan from doing whatever they wanted even if they did score.

The Hurdle is probably the ultimate single play in my 50+ years of watching Michigan football, and has to be considered along with the Hutch & Ojabo sacks as an almost metaphorical lifting of a burden.

After the 2018-19 osu games, and the general ennui of 2020, I honestly just couldn't figure out how we were ever gonna beat osu again. That feeling that day - that was A-Maize-ing!

Also in great Feelings Ball - Blake's TD right after ZZ was carried off to chants of "Let's Go Zach!"

Blake Corum made himself into my Ultimate Wolverine of All Time with that TD & the one in OT in the Rose! He now tops my list!

If we win Monday, it becomes an iconic play. Top 2-3 in modern M football history possible. If we lose Monday, it is still up there as one of the better moments, but it falls below the Woodson Rose Bowl interception bc it loses the luster of being a play that contributed to winning a national championship.

What are we ranking? Plays? Moments? Memories? Impact?

I don't quite understand the question, but here are some fun memories for me. In no particular order.

  • BraylonFest
  • Touchdown Manningham!
  • Desmond on 4th and 1
  • Hello Hesiman
  • AC
  • Woodson's Punt Return vs. OSU
  • Woodson's soaring INT vs. MSU
  • Woodson's soaring INT vs. WSU
  • Woodson tucking and running on a double pass.
  • Daydrion (sp?) Taylor vs. PSU
  • O-JA-BO!
  • Haskins hurdles vs. OSU
  • Robinson to Roundtree - UTL1
  • Shoelaces Flapping In The Wind vs. ND
  • The Don from 75 yards, then from 85 yards.
  • The Don to Roman Wilson in the B1G Championship Game vs. Iowa
  • Scoring 42 after the terrible HS shooting tragedy, with #42 patches on our jerseys
  • The Rutgers Game, lol

I'm obviously missing a ton, but I'm tired of listing these.

The Corum Run + The 4th Down Stop are certainly near the top.

'97 vs. Washington St. is still #1 for me for obvious reasons. That changes next Monday with a win.

'21 OSU is a clear #2. Pick a moment.

Corum + 4th Down are up there with BraylonFest, Manningham, the Taylor hit that changed an entire game, UTL1 and the two put returns for Heismans.

You have to win on Monday for those plays to TRULY make it to the top.

For example, that Taylor hit means nothing if we go 10-2 that year (or 9-2 if it was an 11 game season). It matters because it was a defining moment to a national championship, on "Judgement Day," in Happy Valley, in a top 5 matchup.

  • Brabbs (relevant this week)
  • Pflugner missed XP (relevant last week)
  • Threet keep vs. Wisconsin
  • Transcontiental in Minnesota
  • Forcier to Matthews
  • Moore INT
  • Moody kick Illinois
  • Henne to Manningham in EL (2007)
  • Henne to Manningham "Oh, wide open"
  • Denard to Hemingway Sugar Bowl
  • Dhani sacks Jarious
  • Denard to Koger OSU
  • Brady to Walker "He could make a sandwich!"
  • Naked bootleg
  • Perry OT TD vs PSU 2002
  • DPJ Paul Bunyan pose
  • Peppers 2 point defeats Sparty with Dignity
  • Henson to Terrell "Dangerous, real dangerous!"
  • Jourdan Louis pick vs. Wisconsin
  • Brady scramble vs. 1999 PSU
  • Gardner tip drill to Roundtree vs. Northwestern 2012
  • Goal line stand, Minnesota 2015
  • The final sack Illinois 2010
  • Rudock to Chesson Indiana 2015
  • Forcier flip into end zone Indiana 2009

Forcier vs. Indiana? Okay, I've done enough.

“Shoe laces flapping in the wind” is very underrated.

And just before that Beckman said “and they’ll never catch him.”  Very good call.

Also, unrelated but on that note, in the game preview, Brian said essentially that Milroe had Denard burst in the open field.  No f-ing way.  Not even close.  Denard scores on Milroe’s run in OT on the first series where he found a seam.

To me, the top play will always be Elvis Grbac throwing to Desmond Howard in the end zone on fourth down against Notre Dame.  Most excited I've ever been while in attendance at a game.

If we are talking "in attendance" for me it was the Rose Bowl '98 Woodson interception kept us in the game (2 long passes by Griese to Tai Streets awesome too). Stakes very high.

Honorable mention was seeing surprise after surprise after surprise, Biakabutuka vs top 5 Ohio State Nov 1995.

I wasn’t in attendance, but as a young fan watching on TV, that play cemented my love for Michigan.  That play and that season will always be very special to me.

I did attend my first game that season, but it was the Indiana game, not the ND game.  It was so fun to watch that team, that season.

Not deserving of its own thread, but rewatching tonight, that Bredeson penalty was horseshit and derailed a first half drive. Mullings hadn't even reached the first down marker and gained 4 yards AFTER the "second' part of the block.

Instantly iconic and unforgettable, especially given that at the conclusion of that play there is a massive and emotionally overwhelming celebration on the field.

But then, this team has given us so many iconic moments over the last three seasons…

Unpopular opinion maybe but the play I like to watch most was 2021 Ohio State with Haskins blasting his way into the endzone while grabbing Erick All's jersey. That was the moment where I said "they might do this." Joel Klatt saying "that's how you run the rock!"

It's not the game-ender like some others but a favorite of mine.

Corums run in OT should be right up there. The jump cut and fighting through 2-3 tackles as if to say “I’m putting this team on my back and we are going to win this” is epic. That guy, bless him for what he’s done for this football team.

That run was iconic.

I rewatched it maybe 15 times in a row earlier today.

The vision, balance, heart, determination, power, skill, everything.

It was like for one moment he went Barry, then Walter, then Brown...all in the same run.

The only modern era run of the similar significance that I can think of like that was Marshawn Lynch and the Beast Quake run.

Corum's run had everything.

Edit: I just had to rewatch Beast Quake. Interesting, both Corum and Lynch went backwards into the end zone. Of course Marshawn was grabbing his nuts, but backwards he was.

Get off my lawn approach:

That wasn't fully a 'goal line stand'. The greatest goal line stand in Michigan history is at Penn State 1993. First and goal from inside the one.

Other great plays for the list, as I rock my chair on the porch and clean my shotgun:

Leroy Hoard for 61 yards vs that great USC defense, 89 Rose Bowl.

Wheatley v. Washington (not sure you can pick just one).

That rascally Harbaugh kid (remember him?) to Kolesar vs OSU.

Oh, and the Rod Moore tackle that saved a sure touchdown yesterday or those next four plays don't happen!

Have to give a shoutout to our coach.  The Harbaugh to Kolesar touchdown bomb in the 4th quarter against Ohio State in 1985 has got to be one of the biggest moments in program history that doesn't get talked about enough.

But GOD...even for a history nut like me, these things can get complicated to actually rank.

People are mentioning a number of great plays, and I agree with almost all of them.  My faves from last night are:

1.  Corum's TD in OT; the kid simply would not be denied, it was epic Corum.

2.  Wilson's grab.

3.  Several plays from The Stand:

     3a.  Graham's TFL.

3b.  The stop by Wallace on 3rd down.

     3c.  Fourth down

As for plays not from last night:

The two Heisman moment punt returns are simply iconic.

Harbaugh to Kolesar might be my favorite of all time.  I was watching the game in my house in Athens, GA, and the live TV feed was very confusing.  Musberger says something about a blitz, you can't see anything downfield, Harbaugh is on the ground, and then they finally get a camera on Kolesar hitting the end zone.  At this point I start screaming with joy, my wife comes to see if I am OK, our dog runs over to comfort me, but all is right in the world.

It was a glorious ending, but it really wasn’t a true goal line stand, which implies multiple stops at the goal line. Penn State, 1993. Minnesota a few years ago. Those were goal line stands. This was one stop inside the 5.
