When is the last time Michigan started a true freshman qb?
The hype articles around JJ Mccarthy are all over and around. #21 overall in his class. #2 QB in the class. Trying to get more 5 star kids to michigan with him. HATRED of OSU for how they screwed him (Lied told him he couldn't commit till summer then took the #3 QB's commitment 4 weeks later) when OSU was his dream school.
has Michigan ever started a true freshman? I see alot of people comparing JJ to Joe Burrows in his HS play.
Pretty sure it was henne
Forcier (2009).
I still think if Forcier played under functional leadership, he would have been really good. He was the last QB we had who actually played pissed off.
Disagree. Forcier was an entitled brat. Denard was basically the opposite of him and thus had a good amount of success despite not being a great thrower.
Yea, Forcier just didn't seem well-adjusted. I don't think a different coach would have fixed in a couple years what his parents screwed up over 18 years. Whether it was his constant shitty attitude, failing grades, weird suicide attempt, the QBforce.com website, etc. everything just screamed "red flag" about that dude.
Don't forget the wingless helmet.
Don't forget the wingless helmet.
Ok, ok, I won’t forget the wingless helmet
“weird suicide attempt”? Lots to criticize about Tate without going there.
Maybe Forcier that many red flags often means theres a real mental illness. But I guess its easier for you and many others to blame attitude and the parents.
I hope you never have to deal suicide in your family. Trust me its nothing to make light of
Forcier’s ceiling was Manziels floor, but he had an equivalent amount of douchebaggery
That’s kind of his point I think. Good leadership can improve a guy’s attitude.
Not really. Not when it’s bee engrained in the person his whole life. This isn’t just a guy who needs a mentor. It’s an entitled brat who thinks he walks on water, and is encouraged at home.
Brian Griese threw a guy through a bar window or something like that. If he played for Rodriguez, we'd be talking about him like was Tate Forcier level douchebag.
chad Henne
Forcier, before that Henne.
And I think Mallet started a game or two when Henne was hurt.
Also Henson didn't start but got lots of PT as a freshmen.
Didn't Shane start the bowl game as a true freshman as well? The loss to K-State?
I believe you are right. I know he started that game, was he a freshmen?
Yeah I just checked and he was. That was the 2013 season, his freshman year. 2014 was the concussion vs Minnesota, 2015 he RSed and 2016 was his last at Michigan before grad transferring to CMU
Thanks for reminding me of Tyler Lockett scorching our secondary. Wow that sounds familiar.
I still owe a KSU grad a case of beer because of that bullshit...he moved away, and so I haven't made good on our bet.
And Denard Robinson
Nope, Denard didn't start until he was a sophmore.
Well he split snaps with Forcier, so I'm not really sure he started.
When did Denard split snaps with anybody? He was clearly the backup as a freshman and clearly the starter as a sophmore and until that goddamn Nebraska game.
He didn't split snaps, he was a gadget player. Just because he got on the field a bit doesnt make him a starter.
I think Andrew Luck started as a true freshman, so I guess Harbaugh isn't completely closed to the idea
He was a redshirt freshman. At least with his former offense, Harbaugh felt QBs needed a year in the system to come close to being ready to run it.
Tate Forcier started as a true freshman in 2009. Denard also got lots of PT that year but I don't believe he started a game.
Before that, Ryan Mallett in 2007 (when Henne was hurt) then Henne himself in 2004.
Shane Morris 2013 Buffalo Wild Wing bowl against Kansas State is the answer.
Crap, you're right. I forgot all about that disaster of a bowl game.
Good memory.
You're better off leaving it in the memory hole
It’s in the dump... nothing comes back from the dump.
Oh yeah, big time.
Good list
I'd be happy with a Jr. to perform at this level for a complete season.
has Michigan ever started a true freshman?
Seriously?
Yeah not everyone on this board is 50.... some of us have a hard time remember the last time Michigan played a meaningful postseason game when we were 7.
Okay Millennial...
Millennials are old enough to remember Henne, Mallett and Forcier.
Someone too young for that would be Gen Z.
I am the oldest of the Gen Z's (1997)! I still remember the 04 and 06 Rose Bowls, as well as the 11 Sugar and 16 Orange Bowls haha
Some of us also try to forget that a player as bad as Focier was ever a Michigan QB
Yeah not everyone on this board is 50
Sorry, I didn't realize you live on a different planet which orbits the sun faster than ours, so that 2009 was a half-century ago.
Yeah, not everyone is a shitfuck 17 year old who thinks football started right about the time we started watching.
"Dumb question," says Rick Leach.
Hard to believe it took this many posts for Rick Leach to come up. But I'm an old guy who came in as a freshman when Leach was the QB.
Danofrio said that was a dumb ass question when they asked him if he was going to Take the Money & Run.
I agree, unbelievably dumb question.
Man, that was a hard one too look up.
It's almost as if it happened in all of our lifetimes, for those of us older than 13.
