Webb indicates more (incoming) transfers are possibly in the works...

Submitted by DrMantisToboggan on

Sam Webb is saying that two former 4-star teammates on a traditional "southern power" are looking to transfer to Michigan, and Michigan will pursue upon the two players being granted release which has NOT happened yet. He is stressing that this is in the very early stages and being intentionally vague.

As to who the players are: both are defensive guys. One would be able to play right away as a grad transfer and Sam said that he would "absolutely contend for a starting spot in the front seven". The other would have to sit a year but Sam thinks would definitely be in the DB rotation after he becomes eligible.

Now, if you'd like you can do what we do best: get our hopes up and sleuth. Possible names being tossed around are Antonio Morrison/Alex Anzalone and Jalen Tabor from Florida, as well as one of the three DB's from Auburn that announced they were leaving this week (Melton, Moncrief, Turner). Interesting from the Auburn group is Derrick Moncrief who went to Prattville, AL, where we have procured two recruits from in this recruiting cycle and the previous one.

All of this is premature and speculative, but optimism would this board good. Go Softball tonight.

The fact he is going for so many transfers speaks about the current roster and possibly the significance he is placing on this season. He knows these first two years are crucial...

importance of this season..I think he would do that if he could every season if only to add needed depth. With scholarships to spare, it only makes sense.

Bringing in non-grad transfers of course does nothing for the coming season. So far he's only brought in O'Korn who plugs a glaring hole on the depth chart. I expect him to be very selective with regular transfers.

and having an impressive list of offers.

Just as a for instance, Dennis Norfleet was a 4 star, but his offer list of UM, MSU and Tennessee isn't/wasn't overly impressive.

David Dawson was also a Rivals 4 star, but with offers from UM, Alabama, Florida, Florida State, Ohio State, USC, Texas A&M, West Virginia and Wisconsin among others.

Could recruit.  Couldn't develop.  And that's not just a Hoke thing.  That's a staff thing.  Based on where this staff landed jobs post Hoke we see what the larger coaching community thought of most of Hoke's staff and their ability to develop players.  Piss poor.

I kind of abhor this conversation. Part of "recruiting" is getting guys who can play and be successful. I get that development once you're on campus has to take place, but if guys come here and can't do much on the field for four years, then "Hoke couldn't recruit" is true.

To a degree I agree with this thought process.  But there were SO many misses in his time in terms of inability to develop it tells me that same set of players, given to another HC/staff with a track record of development, would have done more.

To blame it all on crooting services getting it wrong when similar rated classes are doing well for other schools speaks to an inherent inability to develop.  Most of these kids (90% of every class) had at least decent P5 offer sheets so its not like Hoke was targetting kids no one else wanted.

To that end I looked at Minnesota's class one year (I think 2012) - they didnt have a single 4 star in it.  Other years they may get 2-3.  We get Derrick Green; they get Berkley Edwards in a typical year.  And yet they totally outclassed UM's loaded roster.

Utah basically has 3-4 four stars on its entire roster etc.  If its 6-7 guys not developing you can say he is brining in the wrong guys.  When its dozens, thats on the staff being shoddy.  Just like Shula's Bama, or Faust's ND or whomever.

I'm not saying player development doesn't matter (it does), but I'm not blaming it on the recruiting services, either. Ultimately, a coach should be recruiting his own types of guys, regardless of whether they're 4-stars or 2-stars. Minnesota, Iowa, Utah, and others are doing a good job with middle-of-the-road recruits. In particular, I really like what Iowa does because they get hardworking players who are willing to sit on the bench, add weight, mature, and then turn into beasts (or at least pretty good players).

Lots of programs bring in students.....do you know of any that have brought in THIS many at once?

EDIT: In re-reading what I wrote I can see what you're saying. When I think of recruiting, I mean bringing in highly talented people and getting the most out of them. That really falls under "development" of players. So I guess he could recruit based on number of 4* stars he got to come here but that is the only thing he could do...everything else was a disaster.

Glad we paid him $4mm a year for that...

It's funny that you say this, because I can't really remember building a team through the collegiate version of free agency at Michigan quite like this. Of course, I could be forgetting an instance - I have started in with the beer this evening, to be fair, but this is pretty exciting actually to see this sort of interest being generated.

Michigan has rarely ever taken grad transfers or JuCo players on the Football team.

The fact that players WANT to transfer here just to play 1 year under Harbaugh says a lot for the amount of weight he throws around.  And also unfortunately for the amount of roster spots we need help with.

As long as it's someone who can get pressure on the QB I'm happy with whoever we take.

We have not had anything resembling a pass rush since Brandon Graham was here.

Way to call someone a douche stressman. Maybe suckers like you who pay to find out the happenings of high school boys should:
A.). Think critically about the level of creep you become wen you pay for news about children.
B.). Don't hate the rest of us who are a slightly lower level of creep who peruse the info but wouldn't dream of spending a nickel on recruiting.
Love you,
Jdon

Back in January he was dead set on staying, but who knows.

"I'm returning to Florida and I will be getting my degree in 2015. That plays a big role in why I'm returning,'' Morrison said. "And as a leader of this team, I want to lead my team to Atlanta and possibly a national championship. Coach McElwain has put together a great staff and I'm looking forward to working with them this year."

I don't think following this kind of stuff is creepy at all lol. Pretty much just care about the athletes ranking with hope that it'll transfer to college. I do find it weird that you consider it creepy yet still follow it. Are they really children? Theyre 17 and 18 year olds. They're old enough to serve in the military....but you may have been a child when you were that age. lol.

Very few people think following HS football, recruiting or otherwise, is creepy.  And yes, it's weird that he calls you creepy for paying for it yet suggest it's better if you get the same info for free.

There are also awesome spring and fall practice updates over at scout. Some of that good info you end up recieving is because "suckers" like me pay for it with hard earned money.

While we are on the topic of creepy, can we please end the whole "omg shirtless" stuff? That always weirded me out...

I'm not sure if this is a Penn State coaching joke or not, but Alex Anzalone was the guy who ended up at Florida after being committed to Ohio State and Notre Dame previously. He had 14 tackles and 1 tackle for loss in 2014.
