A Way-Too-Early Look at John Beilein's Replacement Candidates

Submitted by UMFanatic96 on May 13th, 2019 at 9:38 AM

Well...this sucks. But the question has to be asked as to who is going to be the next head coach for the program. I would say the massive favorite and most realistic amongst Michigan fans would be Luke Yaklich given he's already with the program and has transformed the team's defense since arriving.

If Warde decides an outside hire is best, it's an interesting question as to who they would look for given this is rather late. Dream scenarios would include names like Chris Beard, Jay Wright, even Brad Stevens.

They would probably look at Lavall Jordan as well, but he hasn't had too much luck over at Butler. Who would you like to see if it's an outside hire? IF you can get Chris Beard, then I would say you go and get Chris Beard. What are your thoughts?

Why does the AD need a year to evaluate who they're going to hire? That would kill recruiting and just leave more uncertainty. Every AD worth their salt has a ready made list for when situations like this occur. They need to hire a full time coach this offseason.

How is this too early? The team needs a coach.

No Shaka.

Pay Jay Wright 10 mil a season. Basketball has been far more successful than football and should be compensated accordingly. Pay up.

I just looked it up. Jay Wright made basically the same salary as Beilein, and is one of just two coaches in the top 20 of salary who doesn't have a buyout attached to his contract.

Coach K is the other. I'm going to guess we don't get him.

Those that think we can't get Wright - why not? He plays his games at a shitty arena in a shitty league at a shitty inner city university.

Why wouldn't he be interested?

That shitty arena in a shitty league at a shitty inner city university (so much code there) also holds two national title banners. Wright just turned down UCLA, who reportedly wanted to double his salary. Take off the maize and blue glasses and explain why he would actually be interested in leaving Villanova after all the success he's had there.

Philly is a fun city to live. Not everyone wants to live in Ann Arbor like me. And simply insulting other places is a horrible way to justify   your argument. What makes Villanova shitty, other than elitist bullshit perspectives that cannot fathom how anyone would want to do anything but bleed Michigan?

Of course money makes people listen, but if people think money alone will pry away already rich coaches away from their places where they are seen as gods, then keep up with the insults of Texas Tech and other places.

I do not mind the wish list, but let’s not insult other schools in the process. Wright is a legend at Nova. Bennett just won a NC st UVA and has a legacy he can build there. Beard can build a legacy at TT. Go after them, sure, but the arrogance of “we are better than those places” is hysterical. Last I knew, a coach who has won a NC at a place may really love the way their university loves them.

He wouldn’t be interested because he has already built an elite natIonal power in a big city with a program molded exactly how he wants it to be molded. There is no reason to step down to a slightly less elite national power. The only schools that would be a step up are UNC, Duke, Kansas, and Kentucky.

He’s not coming to Michigan.

Gregg Marshall at Witchita St. - his star has fallen some the last couple years, but he is clean and would be a solid hire.

Tony Bennett at UVA - no idea if he would leave right after winning a NC, but throwing a bunch of money at him might do the trick. He would be a homerun hire and is most likely a pipe dream.

Mike White at Florida - he was spoken of very highly before our NCAA game with them this year.

Outside of Yaklich and Washington, I think these are some semi-realistic candidates (Bennett was discussed for the UCLA job, so leaving UVA isnt out of the question) that we could look at.

Jay Wright, Mark Few, Chris Beard, Gregg Marshall, Dana Altman, Greg McDermott, Bobby Hurley, Steve Wojciechowski, Steve Prohm.  A lot of great options out there, and most could keep program right on track.  First call needs to be to Jay Wright, would be a grand slam hire for Michigan.  Even better, put Beilein in a cage and change his mind.

Steve Wojciechowski would bolt for Duke as soon as Coach K left if offered the position, especially if he was successful at Michigan. You could say the same for a lot of the younger coaches when some of the true blue blood opportunities open up.

I've got Gregg Marshall high on my realistic list. Wouldn't be jumping for joy, but a solid hire.

People really want to see Yak take over a top 10-20 program in the country?

You don’t need continuity in CBB, you can turn a roster over in 2yrs.  Get the best guy out there.

I'm seeing a lot of talk on here and on Twitter talking about Gregg Marshall. Am I the only one that isn't a fan of going that route? He's always struck me as kind of a dick and really, the opposite of everything Beilein is (was I guess?). Also I recall reading something about his wife being drunk in the stands yelling at some players or fans or something a few years back.

Hard pass from what I've heard.

Sick burn bro. Congrats on successfully naming wildly successful coaches that are being tossed around by the press.

What do you do for a living? Do you have friends? How do you find the time to be on here all the time? Do you recognize how ridiculous it is that you have multiple accounts that you use to upvote yourself? This is truly a strange hobby of yours.

Please no.  But here are two similar names from the same categories in which Amaker resides:

-Johnny Dawkins  (the better ex-Duke coach, plus maybe he'll bring back Aubrey, who's like 30 now, for his eighth year of eligibility);

-James Jones of Yale, who is the best Ivy coach by far.

While I'm surprised the name Patrick Beilein hasn't been brought up yet, realistically no, he needs probably at least 2-3 years experience at Niagara before I'd seriously consider him

Michigan is a top 25-type program, not a top 10-type program, so pipe dreams are almost certainly just that. Without bizarre circumstances and improbably connections back to the school, we are probably looking internal, previous success but older, or someone young but fairly unproven. It sounds like Warde has a list. I'll say the same thing I've said during football hires, the most important thing is to find the right, best coach. That isn't necessarily the guy with most previous success, that doesn't mean it's someone that looks like a homerun hire. I know that puts a lot of subjectiveness into the decision, and a lot of trust into Warde, but that's why you try to hire the best AD, to make those types of decisions (FWIW, Warde was solid at Buffalo and UConn in this capacity).

Call Agent and Get Told Not Interested, Cause it Ain't Happenin'

Wright, Stevens, Donovan (just like Brendan Quinn Said), any other coach with a national title already.

Call Agent - <1% Chance It Will Go Anywhere

Chris Beard, Mark Few, Chris Mack, Nate Oats, Greg Marshall, Mike Brey (at least a similar style, doubt he'd leave ND but switch from ACC to B1G might be worth while)

Outside Hires that may be Interesting based on Old Success

Jim Larranaga (probably past his prime, but has improved Miami), Jamie Dixon (struggled in the post-season, but had lots of great regular seasons at Pitt, hasn't been bad at TCU) , Rick Barnes (turned around Tennessee after being mediocre at Texas), Ben Howland (started the success of Pitt, had some great years at UCLA before it went sideways, got Miss St to the NCAA; better coach than Miss St, but probably not a great hire), Dana Altman (some of the recruiting stuff coming out probably hurts this, but he's been solid at Oregon which to my knowledge was never a great basketball school, was solid at Creighton for a long time before then), Tubby Smith (probably not with mediocre results at other major schools, but always thought he was a class act and got hurt by being at Minnesota), Kelvin Sampson (probably not with cheating scandal),

Outside Hires that have some Upside

Scott Drew (turned Baylor into a pretty consistent NCAA team; long time Baylor coach though with limited upside). Penny Hardway (doubt he comes as he's a Memphis guy, little known about coaching ability, but high upside), Johnny Dawkins (up and down at Stanford, been solid at UCF; bring back his son...)

Internal or Semi-Internal Hires

Yak (current DC), Saddi Washington (guy that filled in when Beilein was out, most likely from current staff IMO), LaVall Jordan (former Beilein assistant, currently at Butler, his alma mater), J. Howard (on track to be an NBA coach, but would be a great hire)

A Little Older Coaches that are Poachable

Eric Musselman (just got hired by Arkansas), Randy Bennett (St. Mary's Head Coach, already 54, but failrly consistent post-season play and consistent results in same conference as Gonzaga), Larry Krystkowiak (Utah Coach, been a while since he made the NCAA, but has had a solid tenure there following coaching Montanta and the Bucks)

Probably NBA or current NCAA assistants with good track records, and likely a few I'm missing
