Way OT: What's your geek?

Submitted by Hail-Storm on

With only a few weeks left, and football news coming in still pretty slow, I'd like to start one of the last OT threads of the summer.

The Mgoblog community is a diverse, intelligent community, with lots of great interests. So my question, what is your geeky thing you are into? Can be games, books, movies, cars, historic timeframe, some collectible you are into.

Here are some of mine;

I played D&D growing up with friends and brothers. I actually highly recommend any parents with kids support this, as there is lots of story telling and character development in this gameplay. We actually were able to play some last year.

X-wing miniatures: Is a table top game with models where you simulate a dog fight between Star Wars space ships. I've recently gotten into this, and I'm currently obsessed

Reading: I've read a lot of books, but are probably not considered as nerdy or geeky as the popularity has grown. Ender's Game, X-wing series, A Song of Ice and Fire series (GoT), Harry Potter.

This can also apply to Michigan Football, as I'd consider WolverineDevotee, Mathlete, WolverineHistorian to have taken their fandom to geek status with the amount of knowledge and devotion they've made to their hobby.

I've been getting into running this past spring and summer.  Makes eluding the authorities much easier.

Pokemon. I once caught all 150 but I guess there's an ungodly amount these days. So fuck that noise. Know I'm sayin?

Are there more games that I could play besides Pokemon? As much as I love Pokemon, I don't really want to buy a console just for one game. One of the biggest reasons I was turned off by Nintendo was because they stopped making good single player games and focused more on "fun for the family" which is great for a party, but everyday not so much.

I enjoy Phoenix Wright games a lot. Think anime-style Law and Order where you play as the defense attorney clearing your clients from wrongful convictions. Mostly mystery-solving and figuring out just how all the evidence/testimony fits together, but the writing and storytelling is excellent. Despite the style, every case is a murder case, so games are rated T or M.

Check out Professor Layton games if you enjoy solving puzzles. Easily the best collection of puzzles I've found in any medium.

I'd have more recommendations, but ultimately it depends on what kind of experience you're looking for. Regarding ODS/3DS exclusives*, the above I'd recommend to anyone.

*I think the first Professor Layton game is available on iPhones now-a-days.

I'm nearly 27 and I'm into the Pokemon TCG. Went to the national and world championships for a couple years in a row before moving out to Montana two years ago. We have no leagues here so it's harder to stay involved, but I still love it.

For beer "good" often means super hoppy IPAs (although during the winter I tend to gravitate to porters). That being said I am in no way above ordering and enjoying a bucket of Budweisers if that's on special when the Tigers game is on or somesuch.

Whiskey - my personal favorite is Four Roses Small Batch so not super obscure, but not super popular.

And I have an extremely broad taste in music. Some days I listen to Louis Armstrong vinyls some days T.I. vinyls, so it varies...

I cannot stand IPA's, but I enjoy sours, which I guess are the new up-and-coming trend...

Same -- except less Budweiser and more Corona or Miller Lite -- I can't justify giving AB my money after their pretty offensive Super Bowl commercial.

Heard good things about Four Roses.

And anyone who owns a record player *has* to have Kind of Blue, right?

I will try a sour if I see one at a brewery that I have never tried, but I don't generally love them and don't typically repeat that purchase.

And see I hate all Miller. I am not sure why exactly, but I do. Love Coronas on the beach but never indoors.

I do own Kind of blue, I think I prefer Birth of the Cool though. My collection runs at about 650 records right now, most of them are ones I got in large collections on the cheap over Ebay or at the local flea market.

"Well, I believe in the soul... the cock...the pussy... the small of a woman's back... the hangin' curveball... high fiber... good scotch... that the novels of Susan Sontag are self-indulgent overrated crap... I believe Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. I believe there ought to be a Constitutional amendment outlawing Astroturf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve, and I believe in long, slow, deep, soft, wet kisses that last three days. Goodnight."

I loved playing D&D when I was in high school.  I was the DM for our group and ran my own self-designed campaign for a couple years before the other core players and I went off to different colleges, and that was pretty much the end of it.  I kept all my old books and miniatures and stuff in my mom's basement for years, more out of nostalgia than any serious belief that I'd return to the game.

A while back, however, I noticed that the game started to make a bit of a comeback in the pop culture.  The geek stigma had receded a bit, probably because of the commercial success the LOTR and Hobbit movies and then Game of Thrones have had.  The new 5th Edition D&D books were drawing favorable reviews.  And I started seeing articles about "vrtual table-tops," which are basically videoconferencing websites for role-playing games.  As a guy in his late thirties with a kid and a pretty serious job, I was still pretty hesitant to start playing D&D again.  But then I turned 40, and was like "fuck it.  I'm a man.  I'm 40.  I'm going to do what I like to do. And what I like to do is play Dungeons and fucking Dragons."

So, a few months ago I started desigining a new campaign world.  I bought the 5th Edition books, recruited some players, and then launched my new D&D campaign on the Roll20 virtual tabletop website.  We've only managed to play two sessions so far, but it's been great.  We do have space for a couple more players if you're interested OP, or anyone else (we play Sunday nights from 9-11 Pacific; we try to play every other week but so far that hasn't happened).  You can find the game at Roll20 using this LINK.

try a geek weekend every year where there are no kids and spouses/ GFs. We played the 2nd Edition DnD, which is what we played in HS.  I heard there were a lot of changes in the recent editions, but we played what we knew since there is limited time.
