Way OT: What's your geek?

Submitted by Hail-Storm on

With only a few weeks left, and football news coming in still pretty slow, I'd like to start one of the last OT threads of the summer.

The Mgoblog community is a diverse, intelligent community, with lots of great interests. So my question, what is your geeky thing you are into? Can be games, books, movies, cars, historic timeframe, some collectible you are into.

Here are some of mine;

I played D&D growing up with friends and brothers. I actually highly recommend any parents with kids support this, as there is lots of story telling and character development in this gameplay. We actually were able to play some last year.

X-wing miniatures: Is a table top game with models where you simulate a dog fight between Star Wars space ships. I've recently gotten into this, and I'm currently obsessed

Reading: I've read a lot of books, but are probably not considered as nerdy or geeky as the popularity has grown. Ender's Game, X-wing series, A Song of Ice and Fire series (GoT), Harry Potter.

This can also apply to Michigan Football, as I'd consider WolverineDevotee, Mathlete, WolverineHistorian to have taken their fandom to geek status with the amount of knowledge and devotion they've made to their hobby.

I'm a huge RPG guy. As I've said before, I used to write freelance for WOTC/Hasbro 3rd edition Dungeons and Dragons back in the heyday before 4th edition came out and split the fanbase. Then I got sick of Hasbro owning my stuff so I wrote my own RPG. It's doing pretty well, even now, about five years after release. I need to release more in the line, but with two kids under 5, it's hard! Still find time to play, though. Just got back from Gen Con!

I also write (and read) scifi/thriller novels. My next one should be out this fall.

And of course computer games. Fallout 4? Fallout 4!!!! A side benefit of the computer game hobby: at least once each year, I can catch some of my students on a Half-life 3 is confirmed! announcement.

Homebrewing first and foremost. My basement is constantly stocked with bottles and kegs, and I think I've gotten pretty good at it. Not much for contests, though I have entered a few and got positive feedback.

Aside from that, comics, though I don't keep up on single issues so much anymore. Just the trades and collections.

Apparently cars, as when I look in the three car garage I see five of them, including three two-seaters, parked in it. Not sure how that happened as it wasn't really a grand plan. 1959 Mark 1 Sprite, 1987 Fiero GT (85% restored), and a 2008 Saturn Sky Redline.

I like sci-fi movies and TV series. Wifey and I have blown through everything Stargate this year, except Stargate Universe, which we're watching now.

I work in IT, so I like electronics and technology. But I'm not obsessive about it...call me a tech pragmatist.

Michigan sports, particularly football and hockey.

Hiking and mountaineering. Have climbed Mt. Rainier 32 times and at least once in each calendar month.

Family...my oldest starts at Western Michigan in two weeks (from Seattle!). Going to miss her, but also very excited for her- I loved my time at WMU.

Star Wars, cars, the martial arts, all things U fo M,  and real estate. That's just the ones I'm the most passionate about. I'm one of those people that if I take interest in something, it becomes an obsession to me. I would like to get into golf and target shooting  more, but just don't have the time.

The #1 thing I'm into is cars but I don't consider that geeky. I do like to play video games but have limited myself to only occasionally now. Probably the biggest geeky thing I'm into is Star Wars. Love me some Star Wars and when I geeked out at the movie theater when The Force Awakens trailer came on my wife called me on it lol.

Most of my life I was a pretty quintessential nerd, into many of the same things mentioned in this thread. I was pretty into sports as well, but typical of nerds I was absolutely rail thin and weak. 6ft and under 140 pounds for most of my adult life.

Due to a variety of reasons, I decided to get into weightlifting and in the space of a couple months I became a lifting geek. Unlike the typical gym brah, I like to compare popular workout programs, work on my form, don't do much bicep work, and despite all of that I still am not particularly strong. So yeah, I would say I qualify as a lifting geek.

I like certain "guy" things to a geek level in a girl's world, if that makes sense. The fact that I like Michigan (and college) football and cars at all makes me somewhat of a geek in the world of girls.

I'm a huge techie, mainly cell phones and computers. I do a ton of research before I buy either, those devices are my life.

Also I used to be a boss at video games about 5 years ago before I gave that up, I was like level 45/50 on Xbox live for Halo 3 back in the day. That definitely brings back memories

241 posts in and no one is (or is man enough to admit) a geek about musical theater. I'll say, I like the Broadway shows more than any straight man I know. I like the big shows from the 80s like Les Miz and Phantom, plus the old Rogers and Hammerstein shows, and a lot of new ones as well. Before I see them, I'll listen to the cast album until I nearly memorize it. I'll go to see many every chance I get, whether professional or amateur, even high school. I learn about the actors and what other parts they have played. And my YouTube history is full of audience recorded scenes from big shows with the big stars.

Funny you mention JCS. I had seen it as a kid but didn't really get into it, then I started listening to all the cast albums on Spotify and I'm hooked. For a few weeks I would listen to the Australian cast nonstop while I was at work.

Wow. Looks like I came late to the party. I would say:

Comics - really trying to get back into current Marvel comics. While I don't always understand all of the references, I really like this Secret Wars storyline. Spider-Man, Avengers, and X-Men are my favorites, but who knows what will be what by the end of this.

Video Games - I don't have as much time as I used to for these. I've typically been a fan of Final Fantasy games (with IV being my favorite), but I don't think I will be getting XV. Used to play NCAA games in college but not anymore. I also like to try RPGs when I can (Dragon Age, Mass Effect, etc.), but haven't found another series I can really get into. I know it's lame, but I was a fan of turn-based combat.

Books - cannot read nonfiction books to save my life. It's almost all sci-fi, fantasy, or mystery. Jim Butcher is my favorite, but I'm generally all over the place. Really liked Michael Crichton.

I just re-installed Silent Hunter III (German U-boat simulation WWII)...with the LSH3 mod, I am doomed for God knows how long...I need to budget my time better.  Thank God football season is coming, or else I would play this friggin' game in all my free time.
