I think the throw to Cornelius Johnson went for 15+ yards.  But that was about it.  Sure, we didn't really need to throw but OTOH it would be nice to get Cade a bit more practice throwing down field passes.  And pass protection did not do well tonight.  On the very limited sampling I think Cade had a couple of clean pockets.

You have to admire our rushing attack though.  Blake Corum is an unbelievable talent.  And the Haskins/Corum tandem is likely the best in the B1G.

Stop being so grumpy. Go watch that play. It was an intentional back shoulder fade. Washington had their coverage set deep and Cade put it where only Johnson had a play at it.

...now his first long throw down the sideline was short, I'll give you that. I wonder if his timing is a bit off with some of the other guys now that Bell is down?

The good: Haskins and Corum are both legit backs and the fact that we could get a billion rushing yards when Washington knew that was what was coming every time is great to see. They couldn't stop it

The bad: we clearly have almost no passing attack. I don’t know if Bell was that important to the passing game or what but they clearly didn’t want Cade passing tonight. You might say ‘well they’re saving it for later’ but we’ve all seen Harbaugh teams before. He is never ‘saving things for later’ – the team on the field is what it is and this is a team that appears to have a serious passing game problem. When we run into a good run defense, it's going to be a mess

Also feels like Harbaugh is overruling 'speed in space'. This was a whole lot of Harball tonight

By all accounts Washington has a good defense.  I think their secondary features two lock down corners that will be drafted.  And they showed up tonight.  We tested them a few times and had below average success then abandoned the down field passing game completely and threw predictable screens to the flats that went nowhere.  The run heavy play calls made sense because they couldn't stop it.  But it seems like we could've incorporated more quick hitters/slants/crossing routes that moved the team downhill and kept Cade clean.

Look I share everyone’s concerns about the passing game, but our OL turned a respectable defense into a parking lot, and our running backs carved these guys apart. Might be one of the best running attacks in the nation. So at least there’s that

On the flip side, it’s not hard to make a case that getting reps for very inexperienced WRs, RBs (it is actually legal to throw a football toward an RB Harbaugh), and QBs at the P5 level would be beneficial.
Nobody is saying that you need to throw deep passes, but the long term work around post Ronnie Bell is to get the low risk horizontal pass game to a functional level. Don’t tell me there isn’t a reason to get Corum the ball through the air. No reason to waste another Chris Evans.

Man oh man, that 67 yard lightning bolt by Corum to make it 10-0 was a thing of beauty.  Blocking was exceptional and Corum's vision and patience to find the gap and burst through it were awesome.  Then the foot race that we all knew Corum would win was the capper.  I rewound that sucker like four times.

I thought this game would tell us a lot about the trajectory of this team but I’m not sure that it did. It seemed much more that Washington was bad than that Michigan was good today. Buy we’ll see how it pans out over the next few weeks

I didn't expect U-M's running game to dominate UW as much as it did, since UW has, on paper at least, a very good defense. Well done by the OL and the RBs.

Passing needs to get better. I know U-M didn't need it this game (and I'm not complaining), but I don't think that U-M will be able to run like this against good B1G opponents.

Defensive rankings for our opponents going into the season had Washington as such:

Linebacker - 2 Defensive line - 3 Secondary - 3

1 and 3 on linebackers were Wisconsin and Rutgers. Defensive line 1 and 2 were OSU, PSU and secondary 1 and 2 were IU and Penn State.

So Penn State should be tough. Indiana now looks like Indiana again and Wisconsin is certainly going to be tough. But what do you see about Wisconsin that’s much better than Washington on defense? Wisconsin has a better offense for sure, but not overwhelming so. I’d say Wisconsin - Michigan is a push after this game. Especially if the passing game looks good the new two weeks.

Also not sure how IU and PSU ended up ranked higher in the secondary. Washington has a sure fire NFL DB and probably another. So I’m not really sure Michigan will see another secondary this good.

Corum just said in the postgame on-field interview that they heard what Washington said about stopping Michigan from running the ball. He said it made the offensive line and the running backs mad. Obviously, the coaches paid attention, as well.

Love smash mouth football, but legit have concerns about facing teams like Wisconsin and Ohio State if we can’t throw the football effectively.

Also, with how amazing our run game is, shouldn’t that make us excellent with play action? Our PA game seems non-existent.

Corum and Haskins are really good but they're both going to be dead by week six at this rate. I think losing Ronnie Bell is going to be catastrophic, because no one else involved in the passing game looks very competent. But the play calling doesn't help. You HAVE to get the passing game going in an in-game environment because you're going to need it in the future. Instead we're headed toward the retrograde offense that failed in the first place. It just isn't going to work against better competition.

The good: The running game, obviously. The OL competently uses gap schemes, inside/outside/split zone, all of it. The RBs are both terrific (Charbonnet looks good! The reason he transferred is that we've got really good guys in the room). Washington was keying on edge stuff and Michigan's decision to consistently attack the middle with the run was rational and successful. And we scored a lot against a defense that might be good and won by multiple TDs.

It's fun to pound the ball down a defense's throat.

The bad: Woof, the passing game. Calling runs on 3rd and pass downs multiple times. Absolute refusal to throw on first down.

The exact reason can't be known yet... but it's a bad reason that shouldn't be in place. Good offenses throw the ball, even with leads, even when it looks like the lead is safe in the first half. Forget "keeping stuff off film." They aren't giving their QB the slightest look at coverages, and he needs that for the times when Michigan needs to throw.

This looks very much like the "body blow" offense in 2018, which was good enough to win some games and not good enough to beat the hardest teams. One might think this is odd, because there's a completely different offensive staff... but the HC is the same. It was the HC then, and it's the HC now.

I have consistently resisted reactionary attacks on the OCs under Harbaugh, because Harbaugh is the party whose influence is most clearly visible in the offense's peculiar character.

It is what it is. Maybe this is enough to win 10 games. I don't know.

We'll be Champions

People are really overthinking this. Our two best players with Bell out are Haskins and Corum...so the vast majority of plays go to Haskins and Corum. I understand we're going to need to go to a more multi-dimensional look as the season goes on, but we just ran for 350 yards against a really good P5 defense. And the average was good too. Like yeah, we'll need to pass the ball, but we've been begging the coaches to give the ball to our best players and the RBs are clearly the best players.

We're not overthinking this. Nobody is worried that Michigan is a bit run-heavy. We're concerned because Michigan under Harbaugh has a long-running pattern of neglecting important offensive options, particularly downfield, and they were calling runs on 3rd-and-10 and 3rd-and-5.

Some people defended the "body blow" concept in 2018, too. It was basically the same thing. Fine in a number of games, but not as good as it could be.

Michigan is neglecting rational options to produce more yardage and points on offense. It doesn't lose the game today, but it will hurt the team later this season, and it hurts the team long term.

When we suggest that the team does not have good wide receivers after Bell has gone out, well, maybe we can look at play distribution and speculate why that is.

Harbaugh coaches football to not lose rather than to win, and it’s been the case since day 1. It’s extremely frustrating but he’d always rather beat his head against a wall than take some risks and it’s an extremely frustrating mindset that will never allow us to beat a team we aren’t clearly superior to.

I…I got nothing.

Michigan hammered Washington.

…and yet…I feel lucky we’re on the timeline where that taunting play kept the drive going.

Still don’t have confidence in offensive scheme. You still have to occasionally pass. You even had to in 1978.

Go Blue.
