Utah’s Cam Rising will not play this season. Possible 2024 QB Target?

Submitted by Toby Flenderson on October 22nd, 2023 at 12:07 PM

Kyle Whittingham recently announced Cam Rising, Utah’s 2022 starting QB, will not be playing this season. He was a pretty good college QB until he got hurt.

Seeing how JJ will go to the draft, Jadyn will be a first year, and the other QBs are in question, should/will Michigan target Cam for 2024?

I think he could be a great bridge QB.

It’s not that Tuttle can’t come back, but we’re seeing Tuttle on a drive or two per game deep in blowouts. He’s been very good in that role (15/17 for 130 yards and a TD) but I’d have serious concerns just riding with a guy that completed 57% of his passes at 5.0 YPA with 5 TDs and 6 picks over the course of 4 years at Indiana and a true freshman backup as our QBs.

At the very least you need to bring a portal guy in to compete. Cam Rising is very similar in playing style to JJ and is a pretty clear upgrade over Tuttle and would be a great QB until Davis is ready. We may have a great TE and defense next year, but we’re potentially losing all 5 starting linemen, our top two running backs, and top two receivers. We’re likely going to see a pretty significant drop off on offense and a proven playmaker like Cam Rising would be a huge asset in making up for that lost production and experience.

The completion percentage isn’t really the issue. The 5 TDs and 6 picks, is. The 5.0 YPA is. Penix had 29 TDs and 15 picks at Indiana. With a 7.3 YPA.

Tuttle has been fine as a backup in mop up duty. But I see absolutely ZERO reason why he should go into next year as the presumed starter. Michigan should absolutely be fishing in the portal for a better option or at least someone to compete.

Well, let's see.

Nah, never mind, not going to waste the time to go through the mental gymnastics of trying to imagine who might possibly be in the portal months from now.

Sure, but I feel like it would be a hard sell unless there’s a huge NIL package put together for him.

Utah isn’t some G5 or P5 bottom-feeder program. They are coming off back-to-back conference championships led by a coach, Kyle Whittingham, that seems to be universally loved by his players.

Cam Rising would be the perfect transfer option for next year while our big 2024 recruit is being groomed for the next level.

He comes from a program with a similar “toughness meter”. Also great all around athlete

Edit: he also has lots of experience against opponents on next years schedule

Is there any reason to think Rising intends to transfer? He’s an outstanding player but I don’t see why he wouldn’t finish his career at Utah.

Right?

Rising is from Ventura, CA which looks like a pretty great place on the California shore.

Salt Lake is a pretty good spot too, and the University of Utah seems like it's on an upward trajectory on and off the field.

Hard to imagine Rising leaving the good setup he has out there to come to Ann Arbor.

Then again, stranger things have happened...

I moved to Ventura a few years ago. Had no idea Cam Rising was from Ventura.

I believe I saw him in two Rose Bowls. He's a gamer but seems to take risks on the field. I saw him take a couple of vicious hits. I can understand why he gets injured. Fun as hell to watch though, and he's a born leader. His teammates love him.

That would be a good idea. If McCarthy were going to be a 2nd or 3rd round pick, staying another year for big NIL money and more experience might make sense, but he’ll probably be shooting up draft boards and leaving now. If that happens, Michigan will be in the market for an experienced QB and Rising is a good one. Whether he’d be open to leaving Utah is another question.

He seems like the kind of kid who could and would totally stay when it would otherwise make sense for him to go. That said, I think it depends on how the season ends. National title? What’s to come back for? But god forbid we lose to OSU or wash out in round 1 of the playoffs, might he consider coming back to earn big NIL, set all the Michigan qb records and solidify himself as the greatest ever to do here, and then go? I could squint and see it..

We’ll find someone who will be pretty good. I have no doubt we’ll find a guy at a Devin O’Leary/Sam Hartman level to be able to bridge us between JJ and Davis/(hopefully) Underwood.

Appreciate the post, it takes courage to put something out there.

With respect to Jadyn Davis’ potential, I completely agree with looking for a number 1 QB for 2024 in the portal.  We’re already seeing some amazing portal contributions by Barner, Nugent, and even Tuttle in a backup role.

Our schedule next year is the toughest I can remember. We’re going to need veteran leadership from day 1, and as another reader mentioned, Cam Rising has played against Washington and USC.

Why not us?

Lots of QBs will be picked next year - Caleb Williams, Michael Penix, Bo Nix, Jayden Daniels, Jordan Travis, Sam Hartman, Taulia Tagovailoa, and probably more. To scouts, JJ's film probably holds up with the rest of these guys and I could certainly see him being a 1st round pick. A guy like Rising will be well-rested and it will be a serious audition for the NFL. Maybe he does move on from Utah but I doubt Whittingham would want to let an experienced QB like that walk.

Diego Pavia - NMSU. No idea if he'd portal but this dude is lighting it up for New Mexico State and keeps improving. He's pretty fun to watch, good pickup for Jerry Kill.
