USC/UCLA to the Big Ten in 2024?

Source: USC and UCLA are planning to leave for the Big Ten as early as 2024. Move *has not been finalized* at the highest levels of power.

I wonder what the impact will be on the Rose Bowl? Poaching two of the most storied Pac-12 teams will probably not have a beneficial effect upon the relationship between them and the B1G. And I also suppose that "The Alliance" between B1G, the Pac-12, and the ACC is now dead, more or less.

Dead as the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact.

Figuring out the conferences now, and knowing who's on whose side, is like trying to understand the sides in the 30 Years War.

Saw this and immediately hated it.  Then I thought about it for 5 minutes and now love it.  1)  How fun to play USC/UCLA a lot; 2) This will be a b1g help in our recruiting of West Coast guys; 3) How's Oregon looking now, Daunte?

This actually makes a lot of sense and seems inevitable. The ACC was too locked up to poach, and the Big 12 had no one left. This was pretty much the last move that had upside.

I wonder if this is "shaking the tree" on the Pac 12, seeing if we can trigger a collapse and get the rest of the prime real estate out there.

ESPN is reporting that UCLA and USC have been cagey about the extension of rights for awhile:

"USC and UCLA have a grant of rights tied to the current Pac-12 television contract, which expires after the 2023 football season and 2023-24 school year. That's why the expectation is that both schools can go to the league for the 2024-25 season and not suffer any financial penalty.

Pac-12 officials had been nudging both Los Angeles schools for years to extend the grant of rights. The fact that they didn't hinted that they had greater ambition."

Seeing as he's a Bruin I bet it could go either way. Plus if UCLA and USC bring all their NCAA championships with them, that might move the title to B1G. So maybe he'll still be a part of "the conference of champions" with a new name.

As a random thought exercise in hypotheticals (because it beats the fuck out of thinking about real life), I'm now pondering an alternate universe where the ACC was one of the nation's premier college sports conferences and it poached us and OSU from the Big Ten

Athletics aside, UCLA and USC* would raise the academic level. Sure, their value would be spread over more than a few academic lowliers, but still an improvement.

* There was a time not so long ago that talking about USC and academics in the same breath would have clearly been intended as a joke. But it's no longer the University of Spoiled Children (or at least not totally any more), and actually has high standards.

My guess is that the USC/UCLA baseball and softball coaches are somewhat less than ecstatic right now. I wonder if something will be done for all non-revenue sports at those universities. The travel costs alone will be ridiculous.

Selfishly, all I can think about are games that start at10 pm or later. I'm not a real big fan of 9pm games as it is. I'm sure the fans on the west coast here feel differently, but I think I might be using my DVR a little more.

Things are changing fast enough, certainly. The ACC has the Irish tied up until 2036, but given the speed of all of these changes and the incredible sums of money involved, maybe they're in play. But it won't be cheap and it while Notre Dame is a nationally valuable brand, I don't think it's worth enough to the Big Ten right now to pay the ACC.

As amazing as this would be on the football side of things, how brutal of a travel schedule is this going to be for essentially all of the other teams. UCLA and USC will be sending multiple teams across the country multiple times a week throughout almost the entire year. Brutal for the student athletes.

Side note, does this mean we can jettison Rutgers and Maryland to the MAC or AAC?

As a former California resident and UCLA season ticket holder (since returned to Ann Arbor), I look forward wearing shorts to a game at the Rosebowl in November.  You know, when you carry a sweatshirt with you to sit on until it gets a little "chilly" when the sun drops behind the stadium, leaving you in the shade.
