Urban Meyer on Michigan: "Don't lower your standards"

Submitted by UMxWolverines on December 12th, 2020 at 8:28 PM

Brady Quinn, Reggie Bush, Matt Leinart, and Urban all discuss Harbaugh. Urban mentions that he grew up in the 70s, 80s, and 90s and saw what we could do as a program and that he refuses to believe Michigan can't compete with Ohio State and to not lower our standards. He also said "blow things up" not necessarily meaning change coaches but that the approach to everything really needs to change.

Harbaugh MUST GO!  LSU just won at Florida with only 54 scholarship players and lost 4 during the game and still won.

We covid'ed our way out of a humiliating OSU BEAT DOWN!!!  6th year Jim, thanks so much for this misery you have given us for $7.5 million a year.

Whose got it better than us - EVERYBODY!!!

So Urban Liar has a national platform on Fox but also still works for OSU? Yeah that isn’t bullshit at all. He probably privately indicated he was interested in Texas job then publicly turned it down to help OSU recruiting. Now he is saying Harbaugh should stay so Michigan can continue to suck. What a joke.

this is what happens when you live in an echo chamber your whole life lol. you make the most strained connection imaginable to fit your narrative.

My gosh man wake up.

The guy is defending Michigan in front of a national audience and giving hope to UM football fans that they can still compete at the highest level.

He is even complimenting Harbaugh who he had a rivalry with. What more do you want the man to do....

I think JH did blow things up.  He hired friken Ganttis, and has tried to mimic this speed in space concept after we were favored to win at OSU only to be blown out by 30 in 2018.  Not sure were or how far along we would be if we stayed the course pre Ganttis.  We were beating teams and more competitive.  Just been some bad breaks for JH and I’m sure for Clemson this first 5 years of Swinney.

A couple of thoughts:

- It's fairly ludicrous to complain about OSU and others "cheating" (by alumni paying players) when we are talking about the future. NIL is coming, which will legalize alumni payments to players. Michigan will be able to match whatever the bagmen were formerly doing completely in accordance with the new rules.

- By "blowing things up" I think Meyer means the whole Michigan Man, win with defense and running the football fetish that many who participate in this forum have decried. He's saying run a modern college football team, which could be with or without Harbaugh as HC.

- I'm genuinely worried about what "player development" means in the 21st Century. Are we talking steroids? I am 100% certain, given the kind of men they are, that neither Hoke nor Harbaugh tolerated juicing. I'm just as certain that is how MSU made so many stars out of their 3-star recruiting. (Goodness gracious, hiring George Perles was about as clear of a red flag as hiring an Easy German swim coach.) It would also account for other teams starting true freshman on OL (Auburn's NC team) with no hiccups, while Michigan needs 3 years to get their lineman up to being serviceable. I would rather see Michigan drop to Div 3 than systematically juice our players, and I worry that might be the level the "win at all costs" programs are willing to reach.

- I am indifferent to replacing Harbaugh. If he can fail, here, anyone up to and including Saban or Belicheck can also fail. There are no guarantees a new coach will be better, and as we all know too well, it can ALWAYS get worse. On the other hand, Harbaugh's performance has been substandard in many areas, even leaving aside 2020. Where is the signature upset (or ANY upset for that matter)? Forget QB whisperer; when have we even above average QB play? A half season of Jake Rudock is about it. How can you explain the games with no discernable preparation or coherent game plan, including and especially with more than one week to prepare? 1-4 in bowl games; totally unprepared for 2 out of 3 home games against MSU. How can you give up 62 points to OSU one year (some of those being due to OSU defensive or special teams big plays); talk all off season about how much it "angers" you, and then give up 56 points (every one of them on defense) at home the next season? I'm not sold on the idea we will surely make a perfect coaching hire with magic unicorns farting rainbows next season if we simply fire Harbaugh. But, I don't blame those who grasp at that straw for feeling the way they do.

In that clip Meyer actually says "...if you're a graduate of the Wolverines..."

If Woodson is ever on the set with that fucking douchebag if I would love for him to say:

"Time out. Excuse me, Coach, but did you really just say 'if you're a graduate of the Wolverines?'

I mean, those stupid, silly words really just came out of your mouth?  Why? Because you can't say the word Michigan, like you're still in the fifth grade?  You're grown ass man. Start acting like it."

"don't lower your standards"

lol that ship sailed long ago... but if we make a change i hope that holds true...

Of the names being floated around to replace if Harbaugh goes, can't say I'm excited by any of them.  Are any of those guys going to take down Ohio State? Probably not

I lean towards sticking with Harbaugh, but Brown has got to go, and Gattis either has to go or be demoted to not having control of the offense. If we're going to try this one more year I want Harbaugh in control of the offense, not handcuffed behind Gattis.

7-6 Rich Rod in Year 3 after being sabotaged by Michigan Men for three years, 14th highest paid coach, limited budget for assistant coaches - Fired.

2-4 Harbaugh in Year 6 after getting all the help in the world from Michigan Men for six years, 4th highest paid coach, unlimited budget for assistant coaches - Extension.

We lower our standards for Michigan Men only.

Sad to see.

One of the greatest coaches clearly articulates what we could be doing better, and the first instinct for most people is to call him a liar or cheater.

The difference in Harbaugh and Meyer isn't that one is clean and one is dirty (though true). It's that Michigan fans were happy when Meyer retired, and OSU fans are happy that Harbaugh is still our coach.

I think my favorite part of this whole thing is the people think the 80s model approach to student athletes isn’t working.

You do understand Harbaugh ripped Michigan because it put its athletes into general studies or Kinesiology correct?? If anything has changed Jim has changed it no one else! I bet Larry Foote was killing it the classroom at Michigan. So was Mannigham. There are a ton More examples too

Quit scapegoating Jim. It’s not the pandemic, Schisell, OC, DC, standards etc its Jim! The issues have been there since the end of 16 on. Just because a lot of fans have finally figured it out this year doesn’t make this stuff new!!

Focusing on Meyer's past alleged transgressions as a reason to not believe what he says or put stock in the comments he makes, is stupid arrogance.

Meyer is smarter and a better coach and recruiter than any coach Michigan has had in at least 20 years.

Not that he would ever take a call from Warde, but he would be the one to turn Michigan around in two years max.  He has proven to be right about Michigan's problems for a while now.  I think he is right, but I would still part ways with Harbaugh, he just seems disinterested.

As a total outsider... I think this sentiment that richrod failed at Michigan is just bizarre. It is something I universally hear from Michigan fans. But I just don't get it at all.

I get that his style of spread didn't fit michigan at the time... that being said, every year he won 2 games more than the previous year... the trajectory of the program was a rocket ship.

If Michigan had kept rich rodriguez they would have been a modern football team a long time ago.

Some coaches like Urban, or maybe just urban actually, can turn a program around overnight. But when you hire a hot coach who is improving markedly every year and then fire him it just makes no sense.

The whole thing is compounded by Rich Rod's history... at West Virginia he won 3 games his first season, in years 5,6 and 7 he was 32-5.

He was 8-4 in his fourth year at west virginia and at Michigan they didn't even give him that long.
