UM class moving up the 247 ratings

Submitted by TK on December 10th, 2021 at 1:43 PM

Don’t look now but Michigan’s class is up to 10th. A number of players just received big bumps in the composite rankings.

Loveland 340 (up about 200 spots)

Graham 351 (up about 300 spots)

Henry 376 (up about 70 spots)

Grant 452 (up about 100 spots)

Dent 896 (up about 600 spots I think)

I suspect this is some of the other sites finally updating their rankings.

Which is exactly what happened to Maizen. He railed on and on about how basketball recruiting was subpar and we would never win anything with Beilein because he got lucky with that 1 class + Hardaway/Burke. It was proven wildly wrong after we made the championship game with Mo Wagner and company and then just stopped posting because everyone kept reminding him how wrong he was

Hard work beats talent when talent refuses to work hard. The key is to make sure that the ones brought in have that mix. I’m ok with some low rated kids as flyers because they become program builders over four years. We should optimally be getting our class from the top 500 kids though. I also like to look at the position ranking too. You’d ideally want the kids in the top 50 of their position ranking. You get the 50th ranked quarterback you are gonna struggle, you get the 50th ranked wide receiver he could be one of the best in the country still.

Agree - talent will win out 75% of the time, But in rivalries, emotion also plays a big part. I just believe that this year the players coaches got tired of listening about the OSU dominance and how they were favored.  I know one thing though, next year, in Columbus, we're really going to have to bring it as they'll have a whole year to simmer about this year's game.

I don't get this narrative.

I mean, it's not like JH3 and the Michigan players are going to be sitting around having mocha lattes and talking about Sartre in the offseason. Ryan "hang 100 on them" Day will still exist and he can never walk back that one comment. Michigan players will still have that comment hanging over their preparations and as long as he's there.

The flaw here is that "talent" represented by a made up number, based solely on athletic measures created by a mostly unqualified judge, applied to a 16-18 year old whose mama still does his laundry and cooks for him, gives no real indication if that child is ready to grow up and actually live up to his potential.

That's why the "talent" represented in the highly ranked '16&'17 classes didn't "win most often" and even lead to the last two years of struggle, mostly because they busted through the portal real early.

That's why accepting early commits from guys you know are dedicated to the program is smart even if they are unranked or low 3*s.

They help build great classes that grow together like the #goonsquad19.

Personally I don’t really care if our class finishes 8th or 15th or whatever because the ratings are somewhat based on number of recruits anyway. But it’s nice to see a lot of these under the radar types that are getting huge bumps in the rankings. It shows that they agree with the scouting of our coaches.

You make a good point about recruiting ratings being based on the number of recruits but the final rating is based on number of recruits X the average rating of the players.  That's why I automatically skip to the "average rating / recruit" per team as some teams just don't have that many scholarships to give out even though they've pulled in some big-time talent

I feel like we have a lot of under the radar gems in this class as well as high motor, high character program guys. Hoping this will be like the 2018 class with Hutchinson, Haskins, and Bell where we see a lower ranked class develop into a very strong core.

People scoff at players getting a "Michigan (or Bama, OSU, PSU, etc) bump" after they commit but it makes sense.   Who is more qualified to evaluate talent than the coaches whose job depends on recruiting enough of it?  If a kid has a strong list of offers, that means more to me than whatever ranking he has.

The other thing that gets forgotten sometimes is that these are teenagers and they're often still growing into their frames.   By all means, there should be a lot of movement in the rankings as these kids advance through the high school years.

I don't think everyone's success is about the bag...but A&M has that reputation even in the SEC (along with Tennessee, I've gathered) as pretty shady.  So while they have some success (they finished last year #5 I think) and are in a talent-rich area, they're going to bend and break every rule they can.

They play in the SEC, so big players are attracted to that.

They are in Texas, with its fertile recruiting ground, so guys that want to stay home or close by are easier to get.

Not sure what you mean "given their record and recent history" They are 8-4 this season and beat #1 Bama. They finished last season #4 in the AP Rankings and won the Orange Bowl.

85-41 the last 10 years for A&M. 81--38 for UM.

I mean, it's been discussed ad nauseam at this point on the site, but this season's records usually have less to do with the classes than the one before. They finished #4 last season and won the Orange Bowl. That's the A&M that was getting sold to a lot of these recruits. Yeah, they haven't been great this year, but if people on this site wanna talk about how big beating OSU was/is for UM recruiting wise, then you should acknowledge how beating a #1 Bama would be good for their class.

Either way, my main point was you can't really say A&M shouldn't be getting good recruits because they haven't been good, when a quick look shows good seasons recently, and a comparable record to UM.

I just get tired of all the lazy takes about who should and shouldn't have good recruiting class and always blaming it on $. That is not to say I don't think $ has a lot to do with it, but posters on this site act like there is no other reason why schools like Tennessee and Texas A&M would get good recruits. Posters do it about Florida State hoops everytime UM loses out to them too. It shouldn't be that surprising when schools with notoriety, large fan bases and history still land good recruiting classes. Especially schools who are located in Texas or near the South, where most of the great talent is. A lot of the most talented players grow up hearing about those schools their entire life, want to stay in that area, and A&M and Tennessee don't have to convince them to come across country like a UM would.

How the hell is Stanford pulling this sort of recruiting class with no new coach and those on field results? Lots more people respect an education than football players are given credit for.

Recruiting rankings always baffle me.

Michigan is behind Stanford, which is basically Michigan West, but their team sucks and they have less fans. Also right in front of Mizzou, who hasn't been relevant in a long time.

I think NIL is going to change everything once everyone has an established system running. Hopefully Michigan benefits, I think we might have the most fans, and probably the most high earning fans, in the entire sport. I am sure some other schools are right there with us, but Michigan should be able to capitalize on this in the next few years.
