Lol.. So Michigan is bad because they didn't show him how to properly manage the money that he wasn't making yet, And apparently all food in Ann Arbor is jail food.

I would have never expected the "Oh poor me" attitude from Burke, but oh well. You live you learn.

If a student ahtlete is poorly fed or unprepared for profesional life that is completley their fault. The only time food would be an issue would possible be in the middle of the night, but all these guys have unlimited meal plans, plus they have their own sports nutrition bar. The guys I kno won the football team have more food then they know what to do with, so much so that I have about 15 bags of beef jerkey in my pantry right now.

Get a financial adviser with the millions you made signing your contract.

For getting to leave as early as basketball players do, they sure complain the loudest.

Anyone ever hear Football or Hockey alums at Michigan bitch about their time here?

Poorly fed: your choice Trey. I know I ate pretty damn well when I was there.

Poorly prepared for the pros: Don't let your 3 point shooting completely disappear.

The article didn't provide much insight or depth to the headline grabbing quotes. Too bad, because I would have liked to better understand where Trey was coming from. Sadly, the nature of the quotes and article make it sound like Burke felt a little too entitled. If he could win player of the year and lead a team to the national title game while checked out, well then, wow.

To be fair, the play of Beilein players in the pros certainly makes it seem like he isn't running a system super conductive to success at the NBA level.

That's weird because Baumgardner wrote an article in a July how Burke said he still cherishes his time at Michigan, and dreams of his jersey being retired

Is it possible to prepare someone to go from having not much money to multiple millions of dollars? No amount of schooling or a plan will keep some people from acting on temptation.

I'll always have a soft spot for Trey (my oldest was born in February 2013, and I'll never forget watching that tournament run with him in my arms), but this comes off as entitled whining.

He also said this back in July "I'm a pretty humble guy and I'd never want to say it should or shouldn't happen, but I think about that all the time," Burke says. "I love Michigan so much -- if I saw my number up there, that gives me goosebumps just thinking about it. As a kid, you walk into those arenas and that's one of the first things you see -- those jerseys up there. "To be able to go into (Crisler), look up and see 'Burke' up there -- that'd be great. I know I've got work left to do (in basketball) and someday maybe that'll happen."

its institutional food, not gourmet dining.  college, military, etc, basically all large cafeterias (especially those state-run) run into the same issues re food and its prep, cost, etc.  sure, some places like kentucky may operate differently but thats the exception - few athletes live in separate dorms and have benefit of private teams chefs only using the best, most fresh ingredients to serve those 15 or so players.  at least he had access to protein bars, supplements and protein shakes / smoothies in addition to meal plans.

no comment on his being unprepared for pro ball / life

If your dad is truly qualified to be your agent, yet you're angry that your school didn't prepare you for managing your wealth in the 2 short years you stuck around... argh.  I'll stop.  Lots of takeaways here, but they aren't the ones he's providing.  Sorry dude.

I don't understand his comments about being unprepared for pro-level money. I remember reading an article about him hiring Compass Management, a management team started by Ross alums.

"I never really had a lot of money growing up, so I knew I was going to need the right team around me to make sure I was managing my money right, not just splurging and blowing it on things that aren’t necessary,” Trey said.

Burke says he felt Michigan could have helped him structure what he would face in the NBA with spending, budgeting and investing money.

Isn't that what the NBA rookie symposium is for? Also, I'd like to know what schools do offer that kind of personal finance services to student-athletes willing to turn professional.

As for the "jail food," I lived in East Quad freshman year (2000) and South Quad sophomore year (2001). East Quad wasn't the best, but it's dorm food--it is what it is. Bernard Robinson Jr ate there bunch of times considering I found myself in line with him a couple other hoops players ahead of me. I found myself eating more at South Quad, Couzens and Mary Markley (yes, for those wondering, they had cafeterias before the Hill dining hall opened) because my friends lived there (and IIRC, those dining halls were alright). West Quad was on par with East Quad, but I think that's because they followed the same menu.

Really not sure what Burke was expecting as a student-athlete.

Boo Hoo, Christ in the Marine Corp the guy cooking eggs is sweating on the flat top. You could hear the sizzle when it hit. Burgers would curl like a bowl from tendons and crap in the meat, and in 1974 we had C rations in the field from WW2. Suck it up buttercup.

how does he know what jail food tastes like?

there are, in fact, certain colleges/hospitals that are provided food from the same big corporations that provide foods at for-profit prisons.  like sodexo, for example.

Well, maybe if he stayed longer he would have been better off in the pros. It wasnt like he was forced to leave. UM food is no different than any other college campus. He needs to put on his big boy pants and stop being a baby.

I don't know this for a fact, but I thought the NBA does a little to prep players for NBA life. I'd be surprised if it was never recommended to Trey to get a fiduciary to manage his wealth. It seems myopic to blame Michigan for his woes after spending a mere two years there. It's no surprise he wasn't ready. Disappointing to hear a Michigan basketball great say things like that.

The tremendous physical shape you were in when you left the university would speak to the contrary.

Honest question, don't these teams have their diets monitored by nutritionists or strength/conditioning coaches?

I ate meal plan like almost everyone else I knew.  No, it's not a fucking bone in ribeye, but there was a salad bar at my disposal at every meal and I took advantage of it.

that his shooting percentage in the league isn't all that good. Oh, and the food too, it's the food's fault that his three isn't falling.

What a load of crap. He's lucky he didn't eat in the Markley cafeteria in 1971-73.
