Transfer Portal Day - Open Thread
Where will Hudson Card go? Is ND guaranteed to target a QB to start next year? Whom will Graham Mertz get fired next?
Let the wild speculation begin!

I live out in Colorado and listen to sports talk radio. People out here are excited. Deion is taking over a historically bad team and the culture has to change. He was hired to clean house and change the culture. I am sure he has watched the tape and talked to people about the team's work ethic. It is being reported that over 200 recruits and transfers have already reached out to him and many of them are 4 star kids and some 5 star kids. The 5 star CB from Jackson State already inferred he is transferring to Colorado. I think it is going to be fun to watch. I think it is a great hire. After all, what does Colorado have to lose?

An incredibly bold move from Prime Time - I thought he'd hold out for something a little more his speed - a Florida school, perhaps. I never pegged him for moribund, staid Boulder, CO - a place Eric Bienemy still says did him wrong racially (not KKK type wrong, but 'special treatment' as one of the few black people in town). Boulder just doesn't sound like a place that Deon Sanders would fit in!
But I hope it works out for him - if nothing else, they'll be more fun to watch!

Deion: "Get in that portal. I'm comin'!"

Fucking nailed it!

Some SM Bro replied to my comment that players hated Ed Warriner that you don't have to love your coach to get better from them, and coddling and love doesn't make you better. Contrast this to Coach Prime essentially telling his new team to lead, follow, or get out of the way, and the punters say you coach by building up, not tearing down. Different philosophies, and different people respond different ways, but the coach deserves to have a team that knows how he does things and buys into it. Michigan doesn't recruit the same players as OSU or Alabama, because we're all looking for something different.
To compare it to my world, consider the premeds sitting in a weedout chemistry class being told, "Look to your left, look to your right, one of you won't make it through this class." i.e. Quit while you're ahead if you don't think you have what it takes. Starting med school, we were told "pressure makes diamonds." It's harsh and maybe toxic, but neither medicine or winning D1 football are for everyone.
December 5th, 2022 at 12:12 PM ^
Wasn’t it former NHL coach Scotty Bowman of whom players said something like, “For 364 days a year we hate his guts, then on the 365th we get our rings?”
December 5th, 2022 at 12:28 PM ^
Not if you are at NYU. Weedout class means for the professor now.
December 5th, 2022 at 1:35 PM ^
Whatever metric med schools use should subtract 10 points for NYU.

Incredibly odd speech by Deion Sanders yesterday telling his new team to go ahead and jump into that portal to make room for new players that are smart and tough
December 5th, 2022 at 10:42 AM ^
I thought that too.... but it was a very Deon thing to do, when you think about it. He pretty much threw the entire program under the bus, calling it a mess for the past two decades.
Get chya popcorn ready.....
December 5th, 2022 at 10:44 AM ^
It makes sense though, from Deion's perspective. If you're a player and you decide to enter the portal, either you don't think you're good enough to crack the 2 deep or you're giving up on the program. Neither of those things are what Deion needs on the team and its best for both parties that those players leave.
It's extremely rare that a player enters the portal and its a bad thing for the program as a whole.
December 5th, 2022 at 10:44 AM ^
The part sermon, part "time for you all to move on because I'm bringing some dogs," mostly self-aggrandizement team meeting? Yeah, weird. The AD had to be cringing. Tarzan and Jane reference, I predict, is just the first in a long rocky road of Coach Prime trying to "be me" at a big university. Gary Barnett learned the hard way in Boulder.
December 5th, 2022 at 12:31 PM ^
Not just any big university, but a very "sensitive" university. He better win big and win early, because he is not a cultural fit there. They will run him out of town at the first sign of adversity.
December 5th, 2022 at 10:45 AM ^
Yeah. I wouldn't want any program I like to come anywhere near Coach Prime. I have a feeling the wheels could come off his whole operation pretty quickly if he encounters any real adversity.
December 5th, 2022 at 10:47 AM ^
Deion seems like a malignant narcissist
December 5th, 2022 at 11:03 AM ^
Seems?
December 5th, 2022 at 10:47 AM ^
I thought the reaction to the speech was as, if not more interesting than the speech itself. Definitely cut into two distinct groups:
A. Group A who thought it was divisive and condensending.
B. Group B who thought it was a message the 1-10 players needed to hear
I mean it was vintage Deon. Called out the team for wearing hats in meeting while wearing a hat himself. Told the team he was bringing his "luggage" with him, meaning his son, as the new QB.
I have no idea if the coach Prime experiment will work there or not. I do know it will be endlessly entertaining to watch.
December 5th, 2022 at 10:51 AM ^
Meh, it was more of a if you're not gonna buy in and do what we want, then hit the portal.
December 5th, 2022 at 11:03 AM ^
But it was also "I already have my guys coming so you should probably enter the portal cause you just lost your job"
It was....weird.
December 5th, 2022 at 12:37 PM ^
He wants the guys that are thinking "Fuck your guys, I'm better and I will show you, asshole" to self-select themselves into staying and proving it.
He is taunting and trash talking his own guys into being better, the most Deion thing ever.
Nobody should be surprised.
December 5th, 2022 at 12:40 PM ^
Kind of hard to do that if your a QB on the Buffs current team.
Deon literally introduced his son at his media press conference as "that's your new QB" while pointing at his son.
CRINGE.
But I wouldn't expect anything less from Prime Time.
December 5th, 2022 at 11:00 AM ^
Yes it's pretty cringy and if he's mistreating them then I don't endorse that, but...
If it backfires spectacularly to the point that his coaching tenure at Colorado is D.O.A., then....what happens? Colorado football is a tire fire for the next decade? It already is. His Jackson State squad might well have hung with this year's CU team or maybe even beat them; the Buffs were just that bad that anything and everything will be on the table for a new head coach.
December 5th, 2022 at 11:05 AM ^
It's a challenge. Some things can't be taken as literal as they're said. He's trying to weed out the weak and challenge the guys who want to compete. It's about culture shift.
December 5th, 2022 at 12:42 PM ^
Except his son. Cause he basically anointed him as the new QB moving forward.
December 5th, 2022 at 11:12 AM ^
Very odd. Not sure what else he said but he is talking to young men he has yet to get to know. Do the “get tough” part first then talk about getting out.
December 5th, 2022 at 11:47 AM ^
He was able to out-talent everyone at his previous school. It won’t be so easy at Colorado.
December 5th, 2022 at 10:38 AM ^
According to a source close to the Texas A&M program, a bag of footballs (including the bag itself) has announced their plans to enter the transfer portal.

Javion Cohen, a starting guard for Alabama is worth a look regardless of how stacked we may be at that position. https://rolltide.com/sports/football/roster/javion-cohen/8065

Hey I hear we need a point guard. I got just the guy.

It seems the entire Maryland football team is in the portal. Surprising.

Pros: Multiple positions open for immediate playing time, opportunities to play against teams that make the CFP at large stadiums with big crowds, NIL opportunities from mortgage bros.
Cons: Must live in East Lansing and be a Spartan Dawg (tm), coaching, personal development, fanbase
December 5th, 2022 at 11:04 AM ^
Hey we meme on Sparty a lot, but they've been able to get some guys from the transfer portal and I think they could do it again and they'll have a chance to start fresh, and their bowl game this year will be an excellent place to build some momentum going into next season.

Oregon RB Seven McGee has entered the portal. He is a 4 star from Rochester, NY, and would be a good target.
Because why get one running back when you can get Seven!
December 5th, 2022 at 11:35 AM ^
I’d rather have Soda McGee
December 5th, 2022 at 12:48 PM ^
He must also kick extra points, otherwise we'd have to call him Six.
December 5th, 2022 at 11:19 AM ^
Michigan should target Fentrell Cypress from Virginia. He was a starting CB and is a grad transfer from a top academic school. He seems to fit the mold of what Michigan is looking for in transfers.

December 5th, 2022 at 11:25 AM ^
Phil Jurkovec (3 year starting QB at BC and graduate of a high school 30 mins north of Pittsburgh) maybe coming home to Pitt and reuniting with OC Frank Cignetti. Slovis underwhelmed this year and doesn’t have the best record in QB competitions.
