It's gonna be strange in the Texas coaches office for the next year. Hard to imagine how things can work out after your boss publicly negotiated to dump you for something hotter.

The story that I read on ESPN.com mentioned that Urbz told them he did want to coach due to health reasons.  So whether that's true or not, it doesn't sound like he'll be accepting any HC job.

"The Austin American-Statesman reported last week, citing a source, that Meyer informed Texas officials he isn't pursuing another coaching position because of health issues."

Once Urban turned them down they elected to just roll with Herman another year.

So essentially if they rolled with Harbaugh another year Matt Campbell will still be around, because clearly Texas isnt interested.

I think this is a case of economics. Herman's buyout is $15M and the buyout for his staff is another $10M. Texas feels like it would have been worth the $25M to buy out Herman if they can get Meyer to come but don't think it's worth it for Campbell or any another coach.

Manuel is playing this in a similar fashion in that he won't pay Harbaugh's $10M (plus whatever it is for the staff) buyout so either he takes an NFL job or comes back next year.

This is basically the reverse of the George Constanza-shows-up-to-work-like-nothing-happened-after-quitting scenario.

"What's that, Tom?  You thought we fired you?  Ha, that's a good one!"

More soup for us then

If Harbaugh leaves, we would be the highest profile job open then, yes? Franklin saved his season, USC is sticking with Helton, Kelly isn't going anywhere

Campbell's only options would be to stay at ISU or come to Michigan. This is the year to make a move, we would be the top open job without any competition. We're already knee deep in a rebuild anyway, just swap the coaches and take the head start you've been given

Yeah this is terrible news for Texas (though maybe with signing day coming up, they felt pressured to make a decision).  I can see poking around Urban before going with Herman, but by doing so publicly, they've turned Herman into a lame duck which is both awkward and terrible for their prospects next year.

However, this should be good news for us if it means that Campbell has indicated he's not interested in Texas (or vice versa) and we're in active communication with him right now.  This only becomes a disaster if we too re-sign Harbaugh, but way later in the cycle and after creating a ton of drama and uncertainty in the process.

So here's hoping Warde has actually been doing business behind closed doors and we're in the midst of a transition.

Maybe they dont want to return to their old glory?

Urban turned them down because he wants the Michigan job. Not an insider here, just a wishful thinker.

This is not surprising, given that he has a Texas-sized buyout that is tough to eat during Covid times.   But it's going to make for a very awkward next 12 months.  Good time for other programs to do some recruiting in Texas.

Off topic but Georgia doesn't get enough shit for chasing off Fields just to keep Fromm. They'd be in the playoffs if they held onto him for this year. Might've been closer to LSU last year as well.

For as much shit as Harbaugh gets about qbs (a lot of it deserved) I think someone said Georgia has had like 4 or 5 five star qbs since smart has been coach and they still haven't had one able to take them over the top

Mccarthy would only be the second five star Jim has had, and the first he's recruited to Michigan. That said, please fire him anyway
