Thoughts on the Rewatch: Army

Submitted by Dizzy on September 8th, 2019 at 12:37 PM

This is a thread to post general thoughts on the game after a second viewing. Instant reactions are in the snowflakes threads.

My thoughts:

Not as bad as I thought it would be. I like Army's DC. I thought his play calling took Michigan out of their offense a lot. They forced some reads into overloaded gaps and mixed their coverage well. They're undersized, but they make up for it in other ways. I hope we never play them again.

Michigan's offense played poorly and it almost cost them big, but I'm optimistic about the unit going forward. The drops and fumbles should go away. It'll be good to get our All B1G LT back, because I don't think Hayes is quite ready.

Don Brown is the truth. Can't wait to see his approach to Wisconsin. Creative Speed vs Power is a fascinating matchup.

“The drops and fumbles should go away”

theyll have to if we want to do anything this season. But we never turned it over last year. Maybe this year we average that back out.

Defending spread option football is similar to defending the triple option and Army is expert at that with its 3-4 tite 4-0-4 alignment and highly disciplined LBs and Safeties.  To beat Army's way of defending the options you have to use that third option - QB keeper.  Looks to me that Shea is still not able to take hits in the run game and was told not to pull it.  Hopefully the bye week gets him right and that QB keeper can be utilized against Wisconsin.  We will need that third option as a viable threat to effectively move the football going forward.

Has anyone else noticed or been bothered by the body language of the players?  I’m as big Harbaugh fan, but I am starting to wonder if Dylan should be starting and is being limited “in game” by the play calling as to not show up Patterson.  The team seems to respond when he’s in the game but what do I know - maybe looking to deep.

When I watched McCaffrey’s interview this past week he seemed noticeably frustrated in his answers and body language.  He answered questions maturely and didn’t say anything to insinuate any frustration, but that’s not surprising in a formal setting.  I’m not calling for a QB change at this point by any means, and I don’t think Patterson has played that poorly.  However, I don’t know how often I’ve seen a QB turnover the ball as often as Patterson has the first two games without a backup of McCaffrey’s caliber at least getting a full drive at QB.

Here’s the interview in case anyone missed it.  Draw your own conclusions...

I've noticed it at times the last couple seasons. A defense gets frustrated when it's doing its job and the offense is crapping the bed and vice versa. The 2017 team every time O'Korn did something ridiculous comes to mind.

I think we saw it too in the bowl game. Once it was apparent that the offense wasn't doing anything, the defensive players followed their leaders and seemingly went, "eff it" and the game was over.

Two years ago, Harbaugh finally pulled the plug when he realized Peters was the better option than O'Korn. Too late? Possibly. But Harbaugh's done it before.

I don't know enough nor have I seen enough of McCaffrey to confidently say he should be starting over Patterson. What I do know is that Harbaugh and Gattis need to coach better and Patterson needs to play better.

The All-B1G left tackle has missed two games for injury.  When a run was needed last year, it mostly went behind the left side - Runyan and Bredeson.  Hayes doesn't have nearly the push Runyan has, nor any of the experience.  It took Runyan several games to fit in, and he was already at full strength physically.  Hayes is not.

I think that is a huge thing we're missing.  Hopefully, Runyan will get back to where he left off, and we can see what Gattis' offense is supposed to look like...  You know, without Harbaugh forcing a 27 for 27 in turtle time.

I re-watched this morning too and frankly thought Army bailed us out some. Dropping back to pass on the goal line was silly when they could’ve just ran twice for a score. Also they had 4th & short near midfield a couple times and punted instead of trying to go for it.

I thought the game was lost when they marched down the field in the 3rd quarter right after we had derped a 3-and-out on the first drive (side note: what the actual f was that "drive"???). A two-score hole against Army feels insurmountable with their style of play.

And then they inexplicably called a pass play. They should have won the game and they got too cute. That let M back in the game. Gave the defense renewed life - and the D played their asses off the rest of the half.

It was the same thing against Oklahoma. They burned 10 out of 12 minutes of clock marching down the field in the 4th quarter, and then they flinched on 2nd and 12 and dropped back to throw. It got intercepted. They could have kept running and scored a walk off touchdown or field goal to win.

Michigan is bad bc Harbaugh is the last vestige of the Bo era style and attitude which we should have figured out by now that no one can do except Bo. It's a cancer now that infects any coach that joins the program. This aspect of our tradition is what hurts us and eventually bleeds onto the field as we play stubborn football and refuse to modernize. I don't think it will change in my lifetime and I've accepted this.

My thoughts on the offense upon a rewatch.

I'm the last person to call for the backup QB, but honestly between the fumbles and refusal to pull the ball on obvious reads, Shea can't be on the field until he improves. Option football when you make the wrong read is just running into an unblocked defender. He also had uncharacteristic accuracy issues all game.

First half play calling was fine. I know blaming execution is taboo around here, but it really was the root of the problem here. The yards were there to be had, but from the big stuff to little details, it all just looked rough.

Second half play calling was horrendous. They almost completely took the QBs legs out of it and tried to play down an man. The passing ans running games seemed disjointed again and didn't play off each other or "put defenders in conflict" like Gattis always talks about. It looked like Army could load up on the runs and drop back into coverage on the passes because they knew exactly what was coming.

The fourth down in the 4th qtr was horrible. The decision might be defensible against a normal team but against Army your pretty much down to one or two possessions at that point. Then the play call was so vanilla, no wonder all 11 defenders were charging at the line. A QB keep off a read would have gone for all the yards, but they just plowed into the meat of the defense, again.

Do you think there's a chance the coaches were telling him to hand it off (no keeps)?

I actually don't know what's worse - because why would the coaches handicap their own plays in a contentious game? Surely they knew Army was no pushover.

But if Shea is missing these reads...yikes. Some of them were so obvious too. And it's weird because he demonstrated an ability to make the read last year, even if he was too conservative at times.

Good point - ultimately Shea is the one out there running the offense, and he needs to make the plays when they are there to be made. I doubt the coaches are telling him he can't keep it. They might tell him to be careful, but that's different than "don't keep the ball on zone read"

After cooling off for 24 hours, I think the defense is going to be very solid this year. They gave up 14 points in regulation, both scores off of turnovers. Can't really play much better than that.  The only bonehead play was the Khaleke penalty in OT, which I will admit was fucking maddening.

The offense on the other hand was a mess, especially QB play and playcalling. Whether or not he's injured, Shea needs to be much better and we need to stop the painfully-vanilla playcalling. That simply won't cut it against most of the remaining opponents.
