Eligibility is only impacted if you sign transfer papers.  That said, when you drop your name on the portal, you have (hopefully) already worked things out with the coaching staff and understand where you stand with them.  You have to also consider the affect on your teammates.  Whether he plays in the bowl game, or not, will be based on those things.  Do the coaches and teammates trust you to give 100% on the field during a game?  Do you want to play to help garner interest?

Lots of questions around playing in the bowl game, but eligibility to do so isn't one of them.

Best wishes in the future, Tarik.    Tear it up wherever you land.   It would be awesome to see you dressed in maize and blue one last time (I'm guessing, though, that it would be weird and uncomfortable for someone in the transfer portal to play in an upcoming bowl game).

I hope all the guys transferring from Michigan leave with their degree and the opportunity to shine at another university.

But can you name one transfer who left Michigan under Harbaugh for a more competitive football program? I think Tarik Black has potential, but if getting playing time at Michigan was tough, good luck breaking through the depth chart at OSU with Garrett Wilson and Chris Olave returning & a loaded freshman WR class (Julian Fleming, Jaxson Smith-Njigba, Gee Scott) on the way. If anything, I wouldn't be surprised to see some of OSU's older receivers who have not cracked the depth chart transferring out. I expect Black will end up at a mid-tier Power 5 program with the opportunity to get more targets and playing time.

I didn't say the transfers were not doing OK or that it wasn't a good idea. But Minnesota is not a more competitive program than Michigan, and I don't know if St Juste would have been higher on the depth chart than Lavert Hill or Ambry Thomas. And St Juste and Keith Washington ended up being the cream of the Michigan transfer crop. Most of the transfers had fallen on the Michigan depth chart and wanted to seek playing time elsewhere at less competitive programs with a clearer path to playing time. Transfers open up scholarship spots for Michigan to move on to try to find players who can make an impact. In the best case scenarios like Ben St Juste, Keith Washington, or Brandon Peters, the players get their degree from Michigan before leaving and find playing time & make an impact at another program that would not be possible with Michigan football.

The point I was making is that most of the transfers under Harbaugh were good for BOTH parties: the player and Michigan. And OSU is dominating us because they get classes as good or better than our 2017 WR class every year. OSU's Trevon Grimes transferred to Florida; Joe Burrow transferred to LSU: their program is reloading every year in a way that only Alabama, Clemson, and LSU can match right now. Michigan needs better recruiting more than the coaching.

Ronnie Bell in 2 years:

52 rec. 850 yards 3 TDs

Tarik Black in 3 years

40 rec 507 yards 2 TDs

If DPJ leaves he'd be making a huge mistake imo. Nico is probably gone.

Plus we have Cornelius Johnson, Mike Sainristil, Giles Jackson and AJ Henning coming in.

Tarik has been checked out all season. Not sure what's been going on with him but a change of scenery may do him well.

You're being needlessly harsh.

If you have actual evidence of him being "checked out" during the season, as opposed to simply not performing up to your level of expectations, please provide it.

Otherwise, this comment is needlessly defamatory. Commenting on the work ethic or mental status of athletes and coaches is almost always done in ignorance.

How about the last game where he could've easily got the first down if he actually ran his route to the sticks and tried to get it? And then we don't convert on 4th and short the very next play which effectively ends any chance to come back?

Open your eyes and look around. I'm not the only person saying he was checked out. Look in this very thread.

But because I'm me of course my comment draws the ire ?

No, your comment draws my ire because it's a bad comment. Yes, there are people on this board who are unfair to you. I've stuck up for you in that regard, criticized offenders, and refused to participate in pile-ons.

Right now you're being caustic toward a guy who played for Michigan, and I find that distasteful no matter who it's from. Your "evidence" is a route that was a yard short. Yeah, it should have been longer; the idea that Black ran the route, saw the first-down-line, said, "nah, I'm not going to bother getting a first down here," and made the catch short? Absurd. Using an athletic error as a reason to trash a guy who endured two heart-breaking injuries and worked hard on the team for three years? Unseemly. Oh, and this: "I'm not the only one... look in this thread?" A handful of internet commenters? The weakest appeal to authority imaginable.

Do better, man. The fact that people neg you unfairly does not excuse you from getting criticized for bad comments.

Sooooo...a kid makes a mistake running a route, and that’s your evidence he “checked out”. Get a grip WD, I doubt that kid worked his ass off to rehab from 2 season ending injuries just to purposely run a route a yard short in the biggest game of the year.

C Johnson has caught like 5 passes. One of them he was wide open for 30 yards because of the play design. Sainristil had hand issues. Sainristil and Jackson definitely don't fit the same role as a guy like Black. And Henning isn't even on campus. There's no guarantee he'll be any better than a guy like Crawford. The WRs will be good but they're also young and mostly unproven and smaller.

Not shocking. I had hoped he'd come back next year, but there was chatter about him earlier this year, and he was a cipher in the offense this season. I'm not stunned, but this is really too bad.

ugh, well maybe this means Collins & DPJ are coming back.  I always thought he was the best of the bunch, but he hasn't seem to get his mojo back from injuries yet.

Not that I wouldn't love to have him back, but Nico is g-o-n-e, gone. He's got the size that the league is looking for in its receivers, and while he doesn't necessarily have elite speed, he's fast enough to still be a difference-maker. I think he's put enough on tape to be either a late first rounder or an early to mid-second rounder.

DPJ I think is a coinflip. Athleticism off the charts, but the production isn't necessarily where you want it to be to go high in the draft. That being said, he could be a guy that shows up to the Combine, has amazing results based on his athleticism alone, and get drafted early-ish on Day 2.

Combine results got David Long pushed all the way up to the third round last year.

First off, Collins does have great size but his speed screams possession reciever in the NFL. Those guys don't get drafted in the first 2 rounds. Doesn't mean he can't go on to have a great career like an Anquan Boldin type, but there's no way he's a 1st or 2nd rounder. Also Collins coming back to Michigan really isn't going to improve his speed any, and that's really the only thing stopping him from being a higher pick. DPJ is coming off an injury, nobody seems to be talking about the fact he wasn't even 100% until about just after PSU, then you noticed his explosion was back from his first 2 seasons. DPJ also talked about getting his education as one of the main reasons he picked Michigan over OSU, you combine that with a lackluster performance in the OSU game and he should honestly come back. If he stayed healthy he should obliterate his 33 catch 404 yards this season assuming Michigan's offense isn't abysmal. Lastly, while David Long had a good combine, he was projected to go in the 3rd or 4th round anyway. He showed what he could do on the field and he was really the only DB that played well against OSU. I thought he was a steal in the late 3rd round just like Jourdan Lewis. Unfortunately for Lewis, he ended up being coached by a jackass in Dallas that wants his corners to be a certain height and arm length. Nevermind the fact that he makes plays when he gets his chances, he did have a rough game against the Bill's, but he also played well against Edelman and the Pats.

Darn. Well, I can't really say I blame him. He definitely took a backseat to Nico and DPJ this year, and then with guys like Sainristil, Jackson and Bell already making heavy contributions this year, there was a chance he may not move up the depth chart much.

Probably just wants a fresh start and a chance to be "the guy" somewhere else. As long as he stays healthy, there's a lot of teams that he could hold that title for. Wherever he goes, as long as its not MSU or OSU, I hope it works out for him.

There were rumblings of his miscontent for a little bit. Whatever. This is college football today.

Hopefully at least DPJ comes back.

We all saw it coming a mile away...was both obvious & probably the best choice for him personally. A damn shame we couldn’t fulfill the promise of the DPJ/Nico/Black trio. Injuries/incompetence @ QB & schemes can be to blame, but that’s sports. Hopefully he has a good yr next year & makes it to the league.

As the passing game started to peak, he stayed the same. I do not believe Gattis recruited Black while Gattis was at Penn State so I think this is a fit thing. Best of luck to Black but I don't think Michigan will miss him much. I don't think this has anything to do with DPJ or Collins.

We’ll be alright as will he. People expected way too much out of him just because of the Florida game. Being gone for almost two years didn’t help either.

Why does everyone assume Nico and DPJ are going pro? They have potential, but the WR class is loaded and they aren't showing up as top prospects in NFL draft rankings.  I would think at least one comes back and along with Ronnie Bell that's still a pretty crowded depth chart for Tarik

They assume that because they know nothing about recruiting, coaching or player development. This is for those that WATCH the game and listen to the media talk about it. Nico Collins and DPJ will go pro if they know what their STOCK will be in terms of what round they will be taken. If they are ready then Jim Harbaugh (who PLAYED and COACHED in the NFL) will advise them along with others. It also depends upon the amount of WR's declaring for the draft and where they may land first. Alabama alone has 3 really good receivers as well as Clemson. If they are advised that they have a good chance then off they go to the combine and goodbye Michigan. These players don't base their decisions because fans think they play good. Last year-Gary and Bush was advised that they would be taken early so they did not play in the bowl game. Can' t blame them for that. Bushnell Beatty and Higdon were ridiculous and especially Higdon who could have taken the chance of bolstering his stock had he played because there were some really good RB's last year. If Collins and DPJ opt to leave then God bless them. That's what its all about at that level. Play a few years-make your millions and then return to finish your degree.

He will have to sit out next season unless he gets a waiver, correct?

Why not just stay here another year and then move on or grad transfer?

Oh well, it sucks but WR seems to be a position that Michigan has some talent and depth.
