Sweet jeebus get a grip all of you Michigan "fans"

I honestly can't believe the bile and disgust spewing forth on this site about the extension of Harbaugh. You are all sounding like the most entitled, whiny, spoiled losers I've ever heard. Posters here talk about $10 million like it's pocket change and chastise Warde Manuel and the regents he reports to for having a sense of financial responsibility for not tossing a sum that amounts to generational wealth down the toilet after it has already lost $80 fucking million this year alone and will likely lose something close to it next year. You all act like giving a very reasonable and more than fair contract to a winning coach who has proved himself a huge success everywhere he has gone as akin to getting a prison sentence in super-max with a 350 pound cellmate with syphilis who was convicted of man rape.

Grow. The. Fuck. Up.

This is your team and the school that you supposedly love. It owes you nothing. If you no longer feel a sense of loyalty or desire to invest yourself in its endeavors that is fine. No one is holding your loved ones hostage and threatening them bodily harm on the condition of your fandom. It is fine to feel disappointed when they lose and don't perform up to expectations. But unless you are one of the boosters who paid some obscene amount of money out of your pocket to pay for Harbaugh's salary, or are willing to burn a couple million to buy him out, spare us your garment rending about the injustice of having to watch a football team coached by a very upstanding, dedicated son of the university who has sacrificed, fought and literally bled for this school and program since he was a teenager.

I guarantee that Jim Harbaugh feels every loss of this program 100 times more deeply than any of you. His pride and competitive nature are more deeply wounded by every loss to a rival and every failure of his team than yours are. He has likely put in more hours and endured more physical, psychological, and emotional anguish in service of this school and this program than any one of you petulant, shit-talking, sneering douchebags has for anything in your whole life. He has probably spent more time away from his family, invested more of his passion, blood, sweat, and tears into Michigan football than you could measure—all for your entertainment. So, maybe give that a moments consideration before you vomit forth your disrespectful, ungrateful, smug condemnations over the fact that you've been denied some completely unearned sense of vicarious pride in the accomplishment of others.

All of you shitting on Harbaugh for getting an extension and being willing to pour himself into trying to finish what he set out to do in making this program an elite football program are no true fans, and I have no idea why you would torture yourself with the burden of supporting a school and a team of talented young men and dedicated coaches when you feel they are so far beneath you.

And that 350 pound cellmate? He found Jesus and has renounced the man rape. He's all about consensual sex now, setting boundaries and establishing safe words. He's finally getting that syphilis treated with a course of penicillin. He's even decided to get his college degree while in prison. Turns out he's really into jazz and is an excellent chess player, so you bond over that.

Well said, Preacher Mike. I absolutely concur. By the way, this is a great turn of phrase - "smug condemnations over the fact that you've been denied some completely unearned sense of vicarious pride in the accomplishments of others".

This was merited.  Thank you.   The photo Brian chose of Harbaugh in his extension post, was deliberate.   And the Net and post was a shame.

...the most entitled, whiny, spoiled losers...

LOL!  so true, so true.   they don't actually care about michigan football...they just care about winning due to the fragility of their pitiful egos.

truth is, you could bring Vince Fucking Lombardi to Michigan and the result would be about the same as Hardball's.  UM don't care about winning football.  It cares about its standing in the fraternity of elitist schools raping their students for tuition money they are simply not worth in the first place.  UM education is a grift, and the best grifts are always played on people who eat that shit up like bacon at Denny's.

STFU and GBTW you snobby little butt suckers

I don't get this fired up anymore on either side of the coin. I hope Harbaugh can find his old self and do what we all hoped he would. Until then, ROLL TIDE! My new Bama hat and shirt have arrived and hopefully Tuesday I will be wearing them as much as possible when I go out here in SE MI and NW OH

I drive up from Columbus every year to catch a couple games, pay hundreds to attend said game. As a result, I am a bad fan because I want harbaugh out for the horrible brand of football that has been regressing since 2016? Okay.

We all called for Carr’s head when he lost to App St. In my opinion, this MSU team he lost to this year, was 10x worse of a loss than the App St game. The saving grace is that name, MSU. My point is that we didn’t want mediocrity then, so why is it acceptable now? Everyone wanted to see Harbaugh succeed (still do) but at some point you have to call it what it is. Is he really going to turn a team around with a high school level secondary and a questionable QB room within the next 2 years? I was a harbaugh loyalist up until that MSU game but offense has gotten worse, and defense has gotten worse. It’s time to move on.

Honestly, I should never sweat a trip to Piscataway. Ever. I don't care if bubonic plague-infested killer gorillas are beseiging us by land and ebola-breathing dragons are bombing us from above.

I have no choice but to join you and cling to the covid hope. I'd like to see a winner. want to believe JH can deliver that, and have no choice, at the moment, but to believe that if I want to maintain hope. But it's going to be really hard for me to unsee 2020.

Power to you guys for thinking COVID has a factor. Teams that are/were affected didn’t take a complete breakdown this team has. COVID has little affects imo. That defense was so atrocious that we lost to MSU and sneaking out a win against mf Rutgers.

Harbaugh has/had plenty of time to get everything rectified. We wanted RRod gone in year 3 for a defense that was slightly better than this team. How is it justifiable wanting RRod gone but harbaugh who is going into year 7 constantly getting a free ticket? This team has surpassed horrible records and getting demolished by teams we should be competing with. I don’t get it.

If the OP made even a few on the blog reflect for a bit on the venom spewed forth about Jimmy, how much he has contributed to the program, over his LIFETIME, and how deeply he cares about its success, then it was worth it.  Steel in the spine, Jimmy.

As a non-alumni but a fan of Michigan athletics, I will say that this fanbase is full of most self-righteous people I’ve ever met.

It was apparent when I attended Harbaugh’s first football game in Utah. One of our annoying fans wouldn’t shut up and sit down so when asked nicely by an usher who was twice his age he responded with, “You can’t tell me what to do! I graduated from the Ross Business school! I make more money than you!”

The unfounded arrogance that kid had who wasn’t out of school more than 5 years showed me why other fans/people don’t hesitate to shit on this fanbase.

So many people think they are entitled to be surrounded by greatness because they attended Michigan that they’ll criticize or make fun of anyone who tells them otherwise. The proof is littered all over this board.

I agree 100% my fellow Yooper. There is not a more toxic fanbase in sports in my opinion.

I've been a diehard MI football fan my whole life, but only old enough to truly remember the transition from Moeller-->Carr and on. The arrogance has always been there, but from my point of view it transitioned from being confident/arrogant about our powerhouse B10 program that Bo built, and Mo/Carr largely carried on to something completely entitled and toxic during the RR/Hoke years and into Harbaugh's tenure. Something has happend to this fanbase that makes a huge portion of MI "fans" perpetually negative and completely unrecognizeable to me now.

The irony of it all is I think these type of MI fans are in part responsible for the state of the program. In this environment it doesn't matter who the coach is it just isn't sustainable.

I'm not saying people shouldn't still demand greatness, and I'm certainly not telling people how to feel about Harbaugh, positive or negative, but some people need to get a grip, do some self reflection and determine if you are being a good fan, or damaging a football program you claim to love.

There are ways to demand better results while still being a constructive, positive fan.

This is where I'm at.  It's not that I believe the program is above criticism, it's that so much of the criticism is overly emotional and negative.  Everyone knows we're not where we want to be, but that doesn't mean we want to wallow in the misery day in and day out.  It's a bummer, man.  But it seems like there's a faction that enjoys the wallowing and can't understand why the rest don't.

I’m sorry you ran into an asshole alumni. We have those, just like every other school. Would you like to hear the story about the little kids and grandma from USC who spit on me and flipped me off as I marched by in the Rose Parade? Or maybe you’d like to hear about what it’s like to march through tOSU campus before the game?

Extrapolating the behavior of one asshole to some large percentage of alumni (or whatever “full of” or “so many” means to you) is offensive and lazy.

Of the hundreds of alumni who are my friends, colleagues, and acquaintances, I’ve never seen one of them behave with that sort of arrogance. They don’t write things like people do on this site.

Furthermore, I can count on one hand the number of them who have even heard of this site. I don’t know of any who post here. The OP was speaking to the people on this site, a tiny minority of fans and alumni.

I honestly can't believe the bile and disgust spewing forth on this site about the extension of Harbaugh. You are all sounding like the most entitled, whiny, spoiled losers I've ever heard.

In all fairness UM is the winningest program of all time and we're 3-3 against one rival under JH, 0-5 against the other, and we just fielded the worst team I've seen in my 41 years on this earth.

Posters here talk about $10 million like it's pocket change and chastise Warde Manuel

I think most recognize that it's a lot of money that we can never relate to.  But, in context it should not be considered such.  Auburn paid Malzahn $21.45 million to walk away.  Texas paid Tom Herman $24 million.  There are a lot of big buyout figures out there and $10 million while a lot of money is not something UM should balk at if they thought it was the right move.  You also have to consider the cost of a shit season in 2021, which based on the team and JH's lack of responses to his players, he has a lot of work to do to get buy in back from his players.

This is your team and the school that you supposedly love. It owes you nothing. If you no longer feel a sense of loyalty or desire to invest yourself in its endeavors that is fine.

I think that is what many are feeling.  They love UM and are frustrated.  They want to win.  Most were happy with 2015-2018 (pre OSU) version of JH's UM teams where they often won 10 games and were competitive with OSU, albeit still without ever beating them.  But, it's been a downward trajectory since the 2018 OSU game.  Two blowouts to OSU, a loss to MSU, two 4 consecutive bowl losses, and very few wins against ranked teams.  Last year's squad was probably the worst I've ever seen.  That or the first year of Rich Rod at 3-9.  At least that year's team played great defense.  People are frustrated and deserve to be.  It's hard to remain loyal to a brand that just can't seem to figure it out, despite having all the resources.  It doesn't make it any easier that our biggest rival to the south is chugging along at all time highs.  You can't help but wonder, what are they doing right that UM is doing wrong?  And, why can't UM repeat OSU's success?

I guarantee that Jim Harbaugh feels every loss of this program 100 times more deeply than any of you.

I have no doubt JH is doing what he thinks is best and is taking it harder than anyone else.  But, a lot of college football coaches go through the same thing.  You can still appreciate the work a guy puts in, while firing him for not meeting expectations.  Getting an extension with almost a 50% pay cut is unheard of.  It never happens.  Generally either you get a raise for good performance or you get fired for poor performance.  It certainly appears that JH, by the nature of being a former great player, is getting an unprecidented gift of an opportunity to not be fired.  Personally I think this is an injustice to everyone.  Do you think JH is happy about it?  Do you think he'll be bitter if he gets canned in 2021?  Hell yes.  This is not going to end well for everyone.  They would have been better off pulling the band aid this year.

If he wanted to be here he would have signed his extension a month ago. Instead Harbaugh held our program hostage trying to get a better deal in the NFL. No one wanted him so he took the only job that was offered to him. Doesn’t sound like a man that really wants to be here. Why should us fans be happy about all that bullshit. I’m just glad we have a great basketball coach.

You seem like a guy with lots of first-hand knowledge of negotiating multi-million-dollar contracts that affect $150M in yearly revenue.

Thanks for letting us know how it should have gone and what was really happening behind the scenes.

I am actually fine with bringing JH back. His first 3-4 seasons were awesome, especially given where we were coming from with RR / Hoke. 10 win seasons are not easy, especially in the B1G East.

His biggest failing is his inability to beat OSU. And while I want to see us beat them as badly as anyone, the reality currently is that they are at a dynastic program high, and have been an unbeatable juggernaut for the past 10+ years. Sure, they lose an occasional game a season to some lower-ranked Purdue-like team, but when they are focused in like they always are against us, they are essentially unbeatable unless you have the talent of Bama or Clemson. We don’t and - no excuses, just truth - we won’t because we play by different rules than those three school.

That’s not to say that JH has been perfect. We need to upgrade 3-5 of the assistant positions, and Jim needs to figure out why our attrition seems to be higher than other schools.  But if you take out this past season, his tenure has been very good bordering on great.  Given the limited other options (I don’t get why everyone just assumed that Campbell would have jumped at the job), this extension makes good sense. And kudos to Jim for having the confidence and humility to take a huge cut and bet on himself with incentives.

I stopped reading at "You are all sounding like the most entitled, whiny, spoiled losers I've ever heard."  That accurately describes a large contingent of the fan base and if you are just now coming to that realization, I didn't have a lot of faith that the rest of your post would be all that enlightening.

OP: Does it not bother you the administration just set the standard that 1-9 the last two games of the season (I’m not counting 2020 in that) and a combined below .500 record to: MSU, PSU, Wiscy & Iowa not only doesn’t get you fired, you can get a contract extension?

Do you honestly think that’s all the better this program can do? If the answer to that is no, what about Harbaugh’s time here gives you confidence it will change?

The buyout amount in the midst of a pandemic is a fair point and the ONLY reason I am not running to Ann Arbor torch and pitchfork over this.

As for the rest:

I am allowed to be frustrated that this team has yet to play in the B1G championship game and looks like it never will.

I am allowed to be frustrated that the team has stagnated and players such as DPJ were underutilized.

I am allowed to be frustrated that the teams effort in bowls has been awful as raises questions about his ability to motivate.

I am allowed to be frustrated that the only reason he re-signed is the NFL’s reaction to his availability was a gigantic yawn.  Which by the way negates all of your “He loves the university” Rah-Rah-ing, but that’s not important right now.

I am allowed to be frustrated that a team I was told was closer and worked together better than previous teams and had gotten rid of some selfish players QUIT, flat out quit when things got tough. This speaks to the culture Harbaugh has instilled.

Look I am happy about the financial terms of the contract, but all it does is kick the can down the road.

There is no Notre Dame or Northwestern style turnaround awaiting us, so why exactly, am I supposed to be happy that Michigan and Harbaugh will just succumb to the inevitable next year rather than this year?

What a holier than thou post this is.  And also one that is devoid of reality.  There are a few people that have the vitriol described, but the vast majority of fans that don't want Harbaugh back acknowledge his history and dedication to the program.  Nobody questions whether he wants it to work here.

But it's not working.  It was great in 2015-16, and has fallen back since then.  The cliff was real this year, and it was steep.  Don't give me Covid, either - MSU happened before any Covid crap, or any injuries.  Wisconsin battled through Covid, so did OSU and a bunch of other teams.  Michigan didn't even get hit by Covid until it was time to play Maryland, 7 games in.  MSU had far less of a 'training camp' than we did, so don't bring that BS excuse, either.

The team hasn't been performing on the field anywhere near close to what it should be.  It's a hollow shell compared to what 2016 was.  The difference from 2016 to 2020 is stark - if you don't see the difference, you are blind.  If you want to reward that performance, then you don't care about competitive football.  Harbaugh is no longer the coaching god he was 4 years ago.

So spare me your righteous bullshit, the god you preach for doesn't exist...
