Stapleton Issues Statement Ripping JUB

Jim Stapleton, identified by John U. Bacon as the source of the leaks, just sent a statement to Jamie Morris that they read on WTKA. He ripped Bacon, said he’s going to sue him, and said Bacon is wrong about him leaking the story.

Honestly, though, the complete silence of the Michigan athletic department is becoming a large source of the problem at this point.  I understand that they are not supposed to comment publicly on the substance of the allegations, but the complete vacuum in place of where leadership should be is becoming more of a problem than the allegations.

The Michigan athletic department has to say something at this point to defend itself against the portion of all of these reports that remain unsubstantiated or you are going to see a lot more of this infighting come to light within the ranks.

Ok, "within the ranks" was the wrong phrase.

But at some point if there is not a unified front, people within an organization are going to start to get spooked.  John U Bacon is talking because nobody else is.  There is nothing stopping Warde Manuel from giving an interview right now saying "we are confident that the truth will bear out that we have conducted ourselves properly, or remedial action will be taken" and then move on to compliment the team for its fantastic season.

Not commenting on an investigation does not mean "not saying anything."  Particularly in the face of an orchestrated PR campaign.  It is unfortunate that this is playing out during a bye week but that is the reality.  Santa Ono.  Warde Manuel.  Somebody has to say SOMETHING.

Is there a link to this statement anywhere? I've seen it quoted on 247 and summarized here, but there's no link to the actual text

Also: My "I am not the leaker, nor am I plotting against Jim Harbaugh" statement is raising a lot of questions already answered by my statement

Were I that lawyer, I would say:  "You dumbshit!!  Why would you make a whiny, non-specific, cry baby list of statements that would be immature from a kindergartner and compound it by saying "soon" he would hear from my lawyer?"

lol this guy

Dear Mr. Crawford,

Jim Stapleton recently provided me with your email address to confirm that appointed members of the NCAA Committee on Infractions (CoI) are permitted to release statements to the press threatening legal action against journalists reporting on ongoing NCAA investigations. Mr. Stapleton also represented that the NCAA's recusal guidelines somehow relate clearly to this case, but I am not sure whether he means that they are supposed to require him to recuse himself or not. Can you confirm whether releasing press statements threatening legal action against journalists reporting on an investigation is grounds for recusal, should the investigation eventually come under the purview of the CoI?

Thank you for your time and attention,

Jon06

...should I do it?

Seriously. Stapleton is a public figure, and in the United States, the threshold to defame someone is very, very high.

Is Stapleton willing to get examined (e.g, his phone records; his emails) to prove he didn't leak anything about Michigan to the press? Even about Burgermania?

My guess is Stapleton is *not* the source of the majority or even the vast majority of the leaks, but even just one would mean JUB is completely OK (legally).

And even then, JUB will probably win -- it's not enough for JUB to be wrong, it has be seriously harmful to Stapleton. Has Stapleton lost his job because of this? Any significant % of business? How about having to move from his home b/c irate Michigan fans are threatening him? As far as I know, nope.
