I lived in San Fran/San Diego combined for almost 45 years and can confirm, it is in fact, expensive as fuck.
January 31st, 2024 at 8:01 AM ^
It's cute that you think he will have to pay for his own house.
January 31st, 2024 at 5:36 PM ^
You'll get that when more houses are burned down than are constructed each year.
January 31st, 2024 at 12:22 AM ^
Hey Mackbru, save your political bullshit.
Trust me, it's expensive as a MOTHER FUCKER to live out here.
This state nickels and dimes the fuck out of you.
January 31st, 2024 at 12:46 AM ^
Jim H better have some good accountants, too. With the budget deficit about to squeeze the Cali spendthrifts in Sacramento, all manner of tax hikes are incoming. And, they even want to tax people when they move / depart! But, I guess Jim says he's going to be there for at least 5-6 years at least.
Or until Spanos gets tired of the wild card round exits. Still, I'll be cheering for them.
January 31st, 2024 at 8:40 AM ^
I'm sure he'll be fine because he's FUCKING RICH
January 31st, 2024 at 10:06 AM ^
But it's not about the money they say.
January 31st, 2024 at 10:32 AM ^
As JP McCarthy (google mim if you need to) used to say, " It's not about the money. It's about the amount of money."
January 31st, 2024 at 11:07 AM ^
Wild Card round exits? Remind me again what Jim’s “round exits” were at San Francisco? You know, the NFL team that he coached where we have actual data to examine instead of opinions.
January 31st, 2024 at 7:09 AM ^
Very much so…. But man is it fun and beautiful out here
January 31st, 2024 at 12:42 AM ^
No politics or fox news propaganda coming from me mackbru...just stating the facts. 14.4% for incomes over 1 million with efforts to raise that to 16-18%. I love California...always have
January 31st, 2024 at 12:48 AM ^
Yeeeeep. They "tax the rich". Hard. And then all their federal politicians want to tax 'em even more. Double whammy!
So yeah, after all the taxes are withheld, Jim ain't getting 16 million a year in take home pay.
January 31st, 2024 at 6:16 AM ^
With as much money as he’s taking home in net pay anyway, on top of the money he’s made throughout his career at UM and with the 49ers, I somehow don’t believe he’s going to be suffering all that much.
I don’t think the true high end earners like him lose a lot of sleep over living in CA and having to deal with their tax situation. Yes, they get taxed a lot more, but when you make more money than you know what to do with, and you’ve been making millions of dollars a year for most of your career, what difference does it make? He can still live where he wants, do what he wants, etc.
January 31st, 2024 at 8:27 AM ^
Nobody suggested Jim would be "suffering". He coaches a kid's game and has access to some of the best facilities in the world. The new Chargers facility in El Segundo looks amazing...except it is near LAX, kinda. The sound of jets overhead, descending for landing would get annoying.
Regarding his net pay, sure, he's doing fine. Sorta. A thinking person would probably get a bit peeved if they looked at their paycheck (guarantee Jim has or does) and saw all the taxes resulting in basically 60-65% of gross pay being deposited. A rational thinking person might then look around their community and state and ask "gee, for this exorbitant total tax burden, where I'm getting closer and closer to working the majority of my time for the state/government, not myself, do I at least live in near-utopia? With clean, safe streets and happy, thriving people everywhere?"
The answer in Cali would be a NO. Resoundingly "no".
Congrats Jim though! Keep propping up Sacramento! I'm sure they'll use a few of your millions wisely. That bullet train is gonna be done soon, don't you worry. Utopia needs just a few more dollars.
January 31st, 2024 at 8:52 AM ^
I think it depends on where you live in California. I was in LA and the beach communities over New Year's and you'd be hard pressed to find a more beautiful area on the west coast. There is no place with happy, thriving people everywhere. Nowhere on this planet does that exist.
January 31st, 2024 at 11:07 AM ^
For me, the answer is to live west of the 405. That's close to nirvana. East of the 405 is a dystopian hellscape. My son is attending UCR 70 miles east of us. Every time I take the 91 out to see him, I'm reminded of the Mad Max movies.
January 31st, 2024 at 11:55 AM ^
Though I would never live in Florida, it's kind of the same. Beaches are great, but inland.....no thanks.
January 31st, 2024 at 11:28 AM ^
Oh please. First, most wealthy people pay far less than that in taxes. Second, there is absolutely nothing harbaugh could possibly want or need that his horrible tax burden will prevent.
”sorta doing fine?” Really? I live a pretty good life here on less than 1% of his salary. IMO a “thinking person” would be far better off thinking about how good they have it, not bitching about taxes.
i can’t believe all the hand-wringing over how much millionaires living in luxury in a gorgeous place have to pay in taxes.
And for the record, I live in sf and choose to do so. Cost of living is far more impactful to me than taxes. It’s the folks who aren’t millionaires and struggle to stay afloat that I care about.
January 31st, 2024 at 9:21 AM ^
No, but a group of creative accountants will make it sting less. Our tax codes are practically made to be exploited.
January 31st, 2024 at 8:46 AM ^
14% on incomes over $1million? That’s outrageous—after that gigantic bite, Harbaugh is only left with $13,760,000 per year to pay his other bills. How is he supposed to live on that? Maybe we should start a GoFundMe to help him.
January 31st, 2024 at 8:59 AM ^
I get the sarcasm but I think you missed the 37% Federal. So it's more near $8 mil. Still....better than most
January 31st, 2024 at 10:27 AM ^
Arguably worse / lower then his actual value as one of the top 10 football coaches in the entire money-flushed sport biz. He's worth more then 8 million per year, per the market. Coaches worse then him make much more, on net. Look at the Broncos. But, I hope he enjoys the weather etc. And his tax bill.
I find Los Angeles to be a crowded, degraded, traffic-snarled dump myself, but yes, the beaches are cool.
January 31st, 2024 at 10:32 AM ^
No, I didn't miss it at all:
"is only left with $13,760,000 per year to pay his other bills."
"Other bills" includes federal taxes.
January 31st, 2024 at 11:42 AM ^
Blu, you know he won’t pay anywhere near that amount in taxes. C’mon.
The max rate in the code does not represent what wealthy people actually pay.
February 2nd, 2024 at 3:27 AM ^
Obviously I'm not smart enough to understand this. Enlighten me
January 31st, 2024 at 9:14 AM ^
I would love to have JH tax burdern. Honestly no one likes paying taxes, but people do like and need government services. It cost more to live in desirable areas, that cannot be a shock to anyone.
The more you benefit from the economy the more you should pay. It is not a difficult concept to understand. If you want to live in a place that has good public education, accesible heatlh care, etc. It is going to cost you more.
Sure there are lower tax obligation state, but look at where those states rank in education, health care, obesity, mortality rates, etc. Everything has a trade off is the only point I am trying to make.
Plus JH and his family will be just fine I am certain of it.
Go Blue!
January 31st, 2024 at 7:44 AM ^
Yes he should watch an unbiased new source like CNN
January 30th, 2024 at 11:11 PM ^
$16 million per year. I wonder if he can donate any of that money to an NIL collective?
January 30th, 2024 at 11:23 PM ^
It’s actually per yeat, not year, so…you know.
January 30th, 2024 at 11:30 PM ^
Actually, it’s per yeet
January 31st, 2024 at 12:38 AM ^
You'll get a lot of yeeting with that level of incentive.
January 31st, 2024 at 6:30 AM ^
on the farm we tally it up, per teet
January 31st, 2024 at 7:22 AM ^
Heard he has a bonus clause of $8 million per skrt.
January 31st, 2024 at 8:46 AM ^
How many skrts does he wear? I don't think he'll see a lot of that bonus money...
January 31st, 2024 at 9:17 AM ^
With his QB arm, he can yeet pretty well.
January 31st, 2024 at 12:16 AM ^
He probably took less so he can steal Ben Herbert from us, I'll always be pissed off at him for that move.
I heard Sam Webb indicate that Harbaugh made a substantial offer to Ben, that's really showing how much he loves Michigan.
I understand taking Minter but why take Herbert from us when now we have to worry about players possibly leaving because of that, it's fucked up quite frankly.
January 31st, 2024 at 12:28 AM ^
Jim Harbaugh is ultimately about himself and what he can do to make sure he can be successful. He isn’t a sentimental guy and there are hard limits to his loyalty outside of his family.
When I think of Team 144 I will always think first of Blake, Mike, Kris, Barrett, Will, Donovan, etc.
While I appreciate the efforts of Harbaugh and McCarthy I’ll never view them with the same level of affection as I do the others. To me this will always be Blake and Mike’s team.
January 31st, 2024 at 12:32 AM ^
Good call Sal, I'll always remember the players way more fondly than Harbaugh, he practically took the joy out so soon after the championship.
January 31st, 2024 at 12:43 AM ^
I think he is sentimental.
But I also think he's the kind of man that thinks that everyone should do his job. It's his job, now, to make the Chargers as good as possible.
And it was Warde's job to retain Herbert. Herbert was more valuable to Michigan than he would have been to the Chargers, and it's Warde's job to reflect that in what he offers. It's not Jim's job to lowball him.
If Warde resigns Harbaugh to a good contract during the season, we're not having any of this talk. Not only would Jim still be coaching, but it would have been a classic FU to the NCAA and the B1G that would then get backed up on the field.
Don't put this on Jim. You actually think he's going to do his job poorly just so that a guy that hates him (and lies about it) can get away with doing his own job poorly? Nothing on earth could make Jim do his job poorly, or he wouldn't be Jim.
January 31st, 2024 at 12:54 AM ^
Blaming Warde is tired and not entirely accurate. Harbaugh had made up his mind to leave before the season if he got an offer. The previous two years show us that.
Harbaugh is notorious for having problems with his higher ups. This will probably cost him his job in LA eventually.
Warde Manuel is a mediocre AD. An nondescript AD who is neither a a Canham or a Brandon, but rather a relatively inoffensive functionary whose main job is to keep the train on the tracks and occasionally hire a engineer or two.
January 31st, 2024 at 11:12 AM ^
Canham was AD during the Anderson years. I hope Warde is a better AD than Canham in that regard.
January 31st, 2024 at 9:23 PM ^
JHumich
"If Warde resigns"
That would be a really good start
January 31st, 2024 at 12:33 AM ^
That does not sound like the guy who would take a paycut and also give out his bonus. Damn.
January 31st, 2024 at 12:38 AM ^
Same guy also took a critical part of the program when he didn’t have to. Same guy who lied about this not being an annual thing in terms of flirting with the NFL.
He did a nice thing. Good for him. But he also did things that hurt the program. Things that potentially only benefitted him.
Jim Harbaugh is for himself above all. Let’s not whitewash over that. Same for JJ.
January 31st, 2024 at 12:45 AM ^
You're full of crap.
He's not just for himself. He's for everyone around him. Because that's what leaders do. And he sacrifices himself all the time for team, for family, etc.
It's just that Michigan is no longer his team.
Michigan could have signed him during the season. Don't you forget it. It's Michigan that shoved him out. Don't fault him for doing his job now.
January 31st, 2024 at 12:55 AM ^
That is completely false.
January 31st, 2024 at 10:10 AM ^
This is a crazy take. If Jim wanted to be here, he'd be here. Michigan didn't "shove him out." He wanted to go to the NFL. Read Jordan Acker's piece on the front page. Early in the season, Harbaugh told him that if a good offer came from the NFL, he'd take it.
January 31st, 2024 at 10:13 AM ^
Please stop putting him on a pedestal. He's like everybody else. He will do whatever is in his own best interest.
January 31st, 2024 at 12:49 AM ^
Harbaugh is responsible for building the team, developing the coaching staff, recruits, culture, etc. Team 144 was his team, and the guys were playing for him. Moore was coaching for him in the final 3 games, and said as much.
McCarthy meant as much to this time as the guys you mentioned - probably more than Donovan, given his contributions throughout the year. Dude played on one leg for the Maryland game and was injured for OSU. Likely don't win either game with Orji or one of the other backup QBs.
