Submitted by LSAClassOf2000 on

This is the thread to discuss everyone's hot takes on the defense and defensive playcalling.

Sorry, no snowflakes.  They were great for about ten minutes of OSU possession: then they couldn't stop OSU.  They couldn't even stop their second string QB, who was the third string QB when the season started.

The only "snowflakes:" it will be different next year.

Sorry folks, Mattison is very overrated. I know all the focus is on the offensive problems, and rightfully so, but his defenses have folded against every good team they've played. Anything outside the standard pro style offense(tempo, spread) gives this team problems. And how many times have they let up a key score right before the half or at the end of a game? That end of half drive turned the game around for Ohio State. He's just as responsible for this tema's failure as the offense.

They do fold against semi-compitent offenses. People use the argument that "RR's offense wasn't good because they were only good against bad D's and did crap against the good one's", but that's exactly what Mattison's D does against good offenses; so I wonder, how many of those same people argue that we have a good D now?

down 28-21 w/ 8:25 to go, OSU ball on its own 20, led by Cardale "I didn't come to play school" Jones at QB.

Nope, 80 yard TD drive.  Game Over.

Fail on all accounts. Bad tackling, out of position, slow, outmuscled, and prevent defenses that fail at critical times in the game. A simple adjustment at the half by opposing offenses means Michigan loses. Give up huge plays every game. Meanwhile. Minnesota is playing Wisconsin for the west title. Jerry kill outcoaches and out develops Michigan and its five star recruits.

recruit more pressure with the front 4 and more speed overall. Really need DEs to attack off the edge and more push inside. OSU was able to give JT a pocket when it mattered. OSU just looks more athletic/faster than UM.

"We ain't come here to play school" ended up teaching today. Fuck this entire staff, I am sick of hearing about maybe keeping Mattison if he's willing to stay. That second (I think) and 15 where Cardale ran right through the defense for a first down was a fucking disgrace. Thanks, Dave Brandon, for unleashing these sorry loser assholes on something I love.

is overrated.

That 3 man rush bullshit at the end of the first half is why he should be shown the door as well.  Nothing like what I thought he would be other bring back fundamental defensive calls.  Not very agressive when it mattered.

Like others, I was less than pleased with this - 416 yards allowed is not exactly how you want to go out as a defense. It was pretty "ugh", especially when it mattered the most.

Numbers, of course:

 - on the ground, Ohio State managed 233 yards of rushing on 39 attempts overall, which is good for 5.97 yards per carry. Elliott and Barrett by far gave us the most fits, of course.

- in the air, Ohio State gained 183 yards and went 15-24; that's 12.2 yards per completion and 7.63 yards per attempt.

About a week ago someone on this site said U of M has a good defense. Wrong. They crap the bed against any competent offense they face, and collapse at key times. The OSU score before halftime is a perfect example, it was devastating and killed Michigan's momentum.

I may be happier to see Mattison go than Hoke, I had high expectations for the defense under this regime. They failed miserably.

by OSU in the last 2 games.

None

Every time they've cross the UM 30 yard line, they've scored a TD.

If UM holds OSU to one FG attempt last year, they win.

If UM holds OSU to a FG attempt at end of 1st half, they go into halftime with a lead.

The college football game has passed Mattison by.

Mattison and the defensive call on 4th and 1 was one of the worst things I have ever w itnessed in 23 years of playing, watching, and coaching football. 4 down linemen against a heavy run team, in a close game, with their third string QB, screams exotic blitz or cover zero press man. Instead we gave them the game on a platter.

The commentators always bring up the fact Michigan has a TOP TEN ranked defense. Griese brought it up a lot today, and other commentators have glorified our defense in past broadcasts. I always say to myself… that’s a totally misleading statistical ranking. They just haven’t watched our defense every week, like we have. We achieved those stats by playing some very awful offensive teams in the Big Ten. We are not truly one of the TOP TEN best defenses in the country. I like Griese, but I got tired of him even continuing to say it… like he was bragging on our behalf. Our defense has had their moments. Though they've also let us down on too many drives this year, time after time. I don’t think people understand how big it was when our defense let OSU dig out of 1st and 25 to score that TD right before halftime. There were just so many defensive failures on that drive to help OSU change the momentum of the game. It feels like we’ve given up quite a few TDs in the final few minutes before halftime, over the last two years. Momentum changers.
