Shea Reportedly Injured In First MTSU Snap. Will Still Start Saturday.

Submitted by Remember_the_G… on September 4th, 2019 at 10:13 AM

Word is Shea had a minor injury on his fumble but will be fine for Saturday. I do recall him seeming uncomfortable out there. More reason to take the slow start with a grain of salt

Real effects to performance from real hits never happen in the video games.

Therefore I'll still judge players from the video game standpoint because their level of guts are always at 110%... until they're not.

Army is not a team to sleep on. They won’t be intimidated by our crowd, and the offense they run is very difficult to stop. If Shea comes out and isn’t his normal self I would insert McCaffery immediately.  I know that fan bases are often guilty of backup QB syndrome but I really like Dylan McCaffrey and obviously the coaching staff does as well. Dylan has never been given the chance to get in a rhythm. We need Shea healthy and we shouldn’t really need him for this game. I think it’s the perfect time to see what DCaff can do.

John O'Korn started against Rutgers at home and couldn't complete a pass unless it was to Rutgers. This was on the heels of, like, 3 or 4 bad games. Then Brandon Peters came in to relieve O'Korn and didn't come off again until he got knocked out at Wisconsin.

Sometimes coaches start the wrong guy.

That said, I think Shea is the better QB right now.

If Shea needs to heal, fine. But what does it say to the team when you start the backup QB when the starter is ready to play? They know which QB is performing better in practice.

If Michigan ends up in a dogfight with Army, we'll all be saying the coaches and/or players took Army too lightly. That kind of decision would be the proof of it.

This post is everything I want in a comment section wrapped into one.

"Army is not a team to sleep on"......followed by....."We need Shea healthy and we shouldn't really need him in this game"

"They won't be intimidated by our crowd and the offense they run is difficult to stop"......"I think it's the perfect time to see what DCaff(Is this a nickname we are going with??) can do"

Never change fans.

Right before the half he took a big shot in his back. I thought that was the one that lingered with him.

Overall, I thought he took too many hits in this game. He'll go down for a game or more if that continues.

That is the hit I remember as well. And then he was messing with his rib-cage pads and grimacing shortly after.

The tweet says 'Couldn’t use lower body throughout the game, but should be ready to go barring any setbacks.' but his lower body seemed just fine on all of those carries he had. The whole thing seems a little off, if you ask me.

I don't doubt he was dinged up but I'm not sold it was on the first play.

That explains all of the McCaffery runs. Harbaugh said something like he wanted to get those plays and since Shea wasn't playing, he gave the carries to Dylan.

Slow start?  And if by "slow start" you mean exactly 100% the opposite of what that term means then yes, by all means.

He threw 25 passes and had three TDs with no interceptions by halftime.  Can you tell me exactly what you were hoping to see if the first 30 minutes of the game that he didnt deliver on?

" Can you tell me exactly what you were hoping to see if the first 30 minutes of the game that he didnt deliver on? "

1) Ball security - fumble lost combined with putting the ball on the ground 3-4 other times at the mesh

2) Accuracy/timing on downfield throws - still too many receivers having to wait on deep throws

3) Some poor reads in the run game

McCaffrey put the ball on the ground as well, we just happened to recover that one.

He was also under center when we couldn't punch the ball in from the one yard line on 4th down.

If you're going to nitpick every little miscue in Patterson's day, make sure that analysis extends to both QBs.

Fucking Michigan fans....

No way. I'll believe he was injured late in the 2nd quarter, because that's when things started falling apart.

I'll stick by my attitude of "this game was like a TD pass that hit us in the hands but we dropped it". I also didn't enjoy seeing us shut down the offense midway through the 3rd quarter. But if Shea is good to go for Saturday, that's only good news.

I wouId have thought the injury came when he got smoked on a blindside blitz at the end of the half. IIRC he missed like 8 passes in a row after that hit.

FWIW, the sole source of the "information" about Shea being injured on the first play from scrimmage?

Bleacher Report.

If you click on the OP's link you'll see that the maizenbrew.com writer embedded a tweet from BleacherReport.com writer Matt Miller.

Sam Webb reported that the hit occurred in the 3rd quarter and somehow impacted his ability to run until he got some attention. He came back in the game so can't be that serious, but his lack of production was really caused by the coaches backing off the speed in space attack and turning to the run.  Shea was 2-9 in the second half, but I recall at least 3 of those incompletions were WR drops not bad throws.

Shea is the starter, period, unless too injured to be effective.  McCaffery usage looks to be change of pace for the "close out" package of 2nd half run plays.  Coaches don't want Shea to take those hits and Dylan's skill set is better suited to that option run game.  We haven't yet seen Dylan execute the RPO but it is likely coming at some point when he is ready.

BTW, thought Shea was very effective in the first half when the accelerator was on for speed in space.  Shea is the guy we need to make this spread offense hum.  The fumble was a fluke.

fumbling on the 1st play from scrimmage can cause some bruising ...to one's ego

having two competent and reliable QB's is a luxury that should be celebrated/embraced

I like McCaffrey a lot but Patterson's passing game is clearly more developed.  Unless Shea is hurt he should get an overwhelming majority of the snaps as he gives us a better chance to win.

I'm just happy that we have a backup who would be the starter at a lot of other schools.

This is why I didn't love how much Gattis was running both QBs. Not at all saying they should be pocket passers, but no need to needlessly roll the dice against low-level opponents and I hope we see fewer designed QB runs into the heart of the defense against Army.

I have no problem with them giving more time to Dmac and resting Shea .  We have a long season to go .  I think Dmac can do it, but id be happier with Shea available and 100 % for the bigger games .
