A whole new kind of tray.  let the trays fall with impunity.

sometimes you find yourself in the middle of michigan...sometimes in the middle of michigan you find your self.

Burning with optimism's flames.  Go Blue.

Wonder if the news today will affect the number of people on here lambasting Juwan?

Seems like he deserves some real credit. Despite the challenges of working within Michigan's strict admissions/credit-transferring regime, he has done an admirable job of repairing some of the most glaring holes in the roster.

Yes, yes, that's only half the battle. Now he'll need to coach them up and instill the kind of positivity and energy that was noticeably lacking last year.

But he's handled all this turbulence with grace and class, never pointing fingers, complaining, or trying to shift blame. I continue to think he's a class act, and reflects damned well on the university. Give 'em hell, Juwan. Let's get back to the tournament this year!

Has he handled the turbulence or caused the turbulence? As the leader of the program he’s responsible for all aspects of. it, including managing personalities and egos. I don’t think he should get credit for filling out the roster, that’s like getting a participation trophy. I also don’t think admissions is a big obstacle as this hash’t prevented Harbaugh from getting top notch transfers. Getting wins is what is ultimately going to redeem Juwan’s resume.

The portal is apples and oranges for football and basketball. You can’t rely on the portal in football. You use it to fill holes. And there are enough underclassmen and grad transfers to fill out the roster. Plus, as a blue blood football school, we are one of the 5-10 most desired destinations for recruits. Our NIL is also competitive for football players.

The portal is the primary method to retool your roster now. And we are not as competitive in NIL in bball and are not a blue blood. Comparing the two is silly IMO. This is not to say we should be in this position. I like Juwan’s coaching in game. But roster management has been a massive issue. Some of it is to be expected with no experience coaching in college and the changes that have occurred with NIL and the portal. But he has to stop wasting time on recruits that aren’t going to pan out for us (upperclassman non grad transfers, 5* looking for the bag etc). We spent so much time on Isaiah Collier even though everyone but our coaches knew he was not coming here. Could have moved onto other recruits and maybe had a few other commits.

I mean, it just depends on whether you blame the head coach for everything that goes wrong in a program or are willing to accept that some things may be outside his control. And honestly, I'm not trying to weigh the scale — I understand the argument that ultimately it all comes back to him.

I just don't see it that way. At least, not in the span of any one year.

While every other Big Ten team — including the Big Ten Champion that was a No.1 seed in the NCAA tournament — got their stars back ... we lost two underclassmen to the draft. Blaming Juwan for that seems ... well, to me, unfair. Same with what happened with Terrance Shannon. Same with what happened with Frankie Collins. Same with what happened with Llewellyn. How much do we demand psychic abilities from him about who's going to be able to play and who's not?

Indeed, I love how everyone is content to instruct Juwan not to focus his recruiting on 5-stars ... but then this site continues to drool at reports that some superstar 15 or 16 year old is planning on coming to Michigan. Should he be bringing great players to Michigan or not?

I dunno, man. This seems like a brave new world, and we're hardly the only team that is trying to figure out how to negotiate it. Seems like Juwan — off the court — is literally doing everything I could ask. Now, no doubt, it's time for him to show off his ability to actively coach basketball. But blaming him for "roster management" ... seems unfair.

Despite the challenges of working within Michigan's strict admissions/credit-transferring regime,

I'm still (mostly) in Juwan's corner, but the Caleb Love thing is on him.   Shannon last year was a learning experience, fine, but the same thing shouldn't have happened two years running.

The football program is navigating the portal just fine, because they understand who to target.  Underclassmen transfers will get in, and so will grad transfers.  Go after those guys.  Don't try to get a guy who needs to complete a boatload of credits in the summer to graduate, it's probably not happening.

In any event, we've got to make the tournament next season.  Nkamhoua is definite step in the right direction, but we probably still need to bring another player or two to shore up the roster.

Isn’t there a bigger pool of talent to choose from relatively speaking on football? Meaning, as a percentage, aren’t there are more young talented guys in the football portal than in basketball? I would think so, but I’m not certain. In any event, I don’t blame home for pursuing Love. Hell, even Love posted on Twitter he was coming.

Idk if there is a greater pool, but because of the size of rosters, you can’t depend on the portal year in and year out for your main contributors in football. The good programs are using it to plug holes and build depth, with the occasional “star” transfer. In basketball, you only have 13 roster spots. And there’s alot more turnover year to year compared to football, even before the portal.

Shannon was at least on track to graduate in the summer at the time. Then his dbag coach Adams blocked him. But that's the type of player you bring in - a graduate transfer or 2nd year player who hasn't accrued many credits.

Love did not fit this mold for sure. But I think it would've been a bigger mistake keeping him on the roster, he's got a rep as a heavy volume shooter. This roster needs a scorer who can play within the offense. More like a 3 & D wing than a ball dominant guard.

When I saw Tray Jackson in the headline I was worried that we lost another baller due to Olivier's commitment. I'm really looking forward to watching Tray play for his home state school, and he gives us the ability to have a somewhat smaller lineup in the frontcourt. Which is also what I've been pining for - go small against some of the B1G teams as a strategic scenario. Looking at Purdue, Wisconsin, Indiana.

I think that Juwan is 100% on the hot seat this season. Two years ago, there was real decline. Last year was a complete disaster.  Roster construction, team chemistry, rotations, allowing his son to play so many minutes while basically refusing to play defense or rebound, bizarre play calling, etc. If last year was his Harbaugh 2020, fine - it happens, even to good coaches. But he needs to show real improvement on all fronts. If we miss the tourney again, I don’t think he survives. If we have yet another crappy season and squeak into the tourney as a 15/16 and go out in the first round, it’s less clear - would probably depend on his recruiting momentum, player retention, etc. But, in my opinion, for Juwan to not be on the hot seat, he’s going to need to pull off a really strong season. Not saying he needs to win the BIG 10 or make a final 4, but he needs to show decisive improvement and a real upward trajectory.

disagree.... Juwann seat is warm you have it full inferno which I disagree with. The only real thing I see lacking in the program is the lack of roster management. In todays college basketball climate who isn't navigating this new way of doing things. I think Michigan has had three incredibly bad breaks roster management wise: 1. Shannon 2. Bufkin, Jett, Dickinson moving on 3. Love. Outside of the guard/wing recruiting I am not sure how much of the blame falls squarely on Juwann in the new way of doing college basketball. I think his seat has started to warm and any showing of a season you can clearly build off and be back to top 5 Big Ten team and definitively in tournament in 2024/25 he's back.

Recruiting players who are good enough to leave early for the NBA should probably count for something.   Being coach of the year in the pros only buys you a season or two, but in college, especially at your Alma Mater, I suspect buys you a bit more leeway.
