Rumor: Gattis Could be out as OC at Miami

Submitted by CincyBlue on January 17th, 2023 at 1:27 PM

Per an SI Miami article:

  • Has not been on campus lately to host recruits
  • Miami QB coach left the team on Sunday, to take his old job as the OC of App. State.  Thoughts are he had been passed over for the OC role for someone new.
  • Rumors are Gattis has been interviewing at Iowa and could retake his old WR coach role at PSU
  • Mike Ryan from the LeBatard Show and Canes insider, teased a change to the OC role could be coming on today's podcast.

That’s where I’m at on his time here. 2019 was his first year and we tried the speed in space thing. 2020 hit and was jacked up altogether. 2021 was his first successful year but it looked way different than 2019 and appeared to have a ton of Harbaugh influence. I don’t think there is anything special to him but usually you give a guy a few years at least to get his players and his system in. It’s then that you find out whether he is worth anything or not.

PSU is where he belongs... he and frames Janklin have similar philosophies....  Frames only hires coaches with hot wives/girlfriends and Gattis only recruits players with hot moms.

Correction: He was an excellent WR coach at both PSU and Bama (not just pretty good).
C Level OC seems right - maybe generous. Peter Principal in spades. We did not get his full (valuable) attention coaching our receivers, and had to accept his mediocre coordinating.
In 2021 it was painful to watch how unhappy he was in the booth as we called so many running plays.

"In 2021 it was painful to watch how unhappy he was in the booth as we called so many running plays."

This is why I've been convinced (along with several thousand other M fans) that the offense was largely taken out of his hands.  The midseason switch from 'Speed in Space' to heavy run packages (ie: Harbaughffense plays) in 2019 was telling.  2020...  The 2021 offense was very Harbaughffense-ish - so much so that nobody that could spell 'Speed in Space' recognized any part of it.

I do think he had some great concepts and ideas on how to integrate passes into Harbaugh's run-based scheme.  But nobody on staff wanted to deal with it (as confirmed by the Athletic article about Poggi), or with him.  Was that because of his personality, or they just wanted to run, then run, and then run again?

I don’t even buy that he’s an excellent receivers coach vs got to coach some excellent receivers.

Miami’s WRs and passing game regressed greatly this year. Michigan’s WRs consistently under performed while he was here. Bama’s were great but he was there for one season and those players were also great pre- and post-Gattis.

“Could.”

Miami’s offense was horrifically bad. Shockingly so by any standard. It was particularly surprising given 2021–even those who put the most stock in “Harbaugh really runs things” couldn’t have imagined Gattis would produce a product that inept in Miami.

The only surprise is that a move hasn’t happened sooner.

Well, the one thing we know he’s good at is WR coaching.  I remember covering PSU’s WR coach before I knew who he was.  Unfortunately we got him as OC.

Luckily Warde told Gattis to pound sand when he tried throwing his hat in the ring as Jim's replacement last year.

Oh wait.  I'm not supposed to post anything positive about Warde.  Sorry.

That Broyles award deal looks like part of an attempt to get rid of a guy by convincing some other poor schmuck to give Gattis a promotion to HC.

Not gonna dig through the past archives, but... are we basing the scuttlebutt about Gattis schtupping recruits' moms on anything more than hearsay and rumors?  I have no desire to cape for him and in fact think we're better off in his absence, but is this just one of those things where since we dislike someone he's clearly guilty of any and everything alleged about him?

If PSU (Franklin) hires Gattis ---- the war just continues.  Gattis/Locksley recruiting battles.

It is a soap opera love triangle.  Franklin and Locksley don't like each other.  Gattis and Locksley don't like each other.  Gattis and Franklin do like each other.  Well, I think.
