Redshirt Update After 7 games

Submitted by Seth on October 16th, 2023 at 11:21 AM

I have the data so may as well share. You can play in 4 games plus postseason and maintain a redshirt.

FRESHMEN WHO'VE BURNED THEIR REDSHIRTS

(Games played in parentheses)

  • WR Fredrick Moore (7)
  • WR Semaj Morgan (7)
  • WR Karmello English (6)
  • DT Trey Pierce (6)
  • DE Cameron Brandt (5)
  • S Brandyn Hillman (5)
  • CB DJ Waller (7)

FRESHMEN WHO HAVE PLAYED BUT MAY STILL REDSHIRT

Hill is probably burning his redshirt if he's healthy enough to return. Keeping an eye on Hall and Marshall.

  • RB Benjamin Hall (2)
  • RB Cole Cabana (1)
  • TE Zack Marshall (2)
  • OG Amir Herring (1)
  • DE Enow Etta (2)
  • CB Jyaire Hill (4)
  • CB Cameron Calhoun (2)
  • K Adam Samaha (1)

Thank you to readers who pointed out Samaha kicked an XP on Saturday. I didn't notice!

FRESHMEN WHO HAVEN'T PLAYED

  • WR Kendrick Bell
  • TE Deakon Tonielli
  • OG Nathan Efobi
  • OT Evan Link
  • DT Brooks Bahr
  • DE Aymeric Koumba
  • DE Breeon Ishmail
  • LB Semaj Bridgeman
  • LB Jason Hewlett
  • LB Hayden Moore

NON-FRESHMEN WHO MAY STILL REDSHIRT

Hibner announced he is taking a redshirt and has entered the transfer portal. Rolder is injured and taking a medical redshirt. Rod Moore missed the first three games but he's not redshirting unless he gets hurt in practice this week or something. Stokes and Walker are worth keeping an eye on.

  • RB CJ Stokes (2)
  • TE Matthew Hibner (3)
  • LB Jimmy Rolder (0)
  • S Rod Moore (4)
  • CB Amorion Walker (3)

ELIGIBLE NON-FRESHMEN BACKUPS WHO ARE NOT REDSHIRTING

  • Darrius Clemons (5)
  • Myles Hinton (6)
  • Micah Pollard (5)

For completion's sake: JJ, Corum, Edwards, Mullings, Wilson, CJ, Morris, Loveland, Barner, Zinter, Grant, Graham, Jenkins, McGregor, D-Mo, Harrell, Stewart, Colson, Hausmann, Paige, Wallace, Will Johnson, Sainristil, and James Turner haven't taken a redshirt year (or if they did it was 2020, which doesn't count against them).

Fuck no. Sundays are my busiest. I sleep mid-week.

Saturday: Publish Punt/CP. Football. Try to get a copy of the game. Visit client tailgates, make appearances. Watch all the Big Ten games. Start Michigan rewatch.

Sunday: Up at 7am with kids. Continue 8am detailed rewatch and take notes for podcast. Leave 9:15am to take kids to Sunday school, drive to Ann Arbor, open podcast room, finish rewatch, read J-Due's low-hanging fruit, set up podcast equipment. 11:15am to 1pm record podcast. 1pm to 2pm edit podcast, create cover, send materials, timestamps and ads to Patrick for assembly. Pack up all the podcast equipment and deliver to Craig's. Drive home (my drive home usually hits halftime of the Lions game). Download data, write Neck Sharpies. Go to bed 1am or 2am.

(Yes, Neck Sharpies is usually done about 2am Monday morning because i need to get ahead on UFR. It's in the hopper now. And it's fantastic.)

Monday: UFR Charting: from when I wake to wee hours, with a break to read stuff online and catch up with the fan zeitgeist (Hi!)

Tuesday: UFR Writing (takes most of the day). Record M&S Show. FFFF chart 1, watch more of upcoming opponent.

Wednesday: Take care of ads/business. FFFF chart 2 and then I'm on break. Wednesdays are when I often schedule client meetings. Or like this week I'm speaking to Dooley's class. DnD session 7:30 to 10pm. Then sleep.

Thursday: WTKA, meet with HUEL, pick musician and set up MGoRadio for Friday, then Thursday afternoon is my weekend. After kids are in bed I try to finish the FFFF chart (Alex usually isn't done with the defense until very late at night so sometimes this is an early friday thing.) Wife has Thursday afternoons off so we try to do something together then.

Friday: MGoRadio, which we moved to noon so now I have Friday nights free but that's new. I used to have to get everything ready, drive up, set up, and then it wouldn't be over for me until I upload around 7pm and I'd go to a hockey game or something to unwind. SO much better.

FYI, you have Enow Etta on the “haven’t played” list and also played twice list.

Thanks for sharing this. I was kind of wondering Saturday about burned shirts but am waaay to lazy to actually do the work.

Pure speculation on my part, but I would expect it is some combination of:  Getting guys experience at positions that will be positions of need next year (CB and S), shortage of healthy bodies at those same positions, wanting to keep guys happy because players like to play, and knowing that you can't keep everyone for five years.

Both have played enough that they're getting useful experience, it's not 1 or 2 snaps at the end of a game.  They're physically developed enough to play at a high level.

I find it more perplexing that they burned the shirt on Trey Pierce, who appears to need some Herbertizing before he's really ready.

Stokes is the most interesting case. He has been listed as injured. But if Mullings and Hall are ahead of him, then is he going to stick around.

and everyone listed under the completions sake list sort of validates the staff's non-usage of redshirts. No one there is likely to be a case of "no NFL potential, but ran out of eligibility and wish they could come back 1 more year"

I love the variety of names, in sound and spelling: Semaj, Karmello, Brandyn, Deakon, Enow, Aymeric, Breeon, Semaj (another one!), Adama, Amorion, Darrius, Micah.

(But auto-correct definitely does not love them.)

Will there come a day when referring to the "Jimmys and Jo's" will draw a blank, and people will instead be talking about the "Aymerics and Enows"?

I know he's gone to the NFL and all, but I'd love to get Mikey to come back next year and just play against Texas, USC, OSU, and in the playoff. :). You know, as a "redshirt" year.
