Recent Jace Howard Crystal Ball Activity

Sam Webb put in a crystal ball yesterday and Josh Newkirk put in a crystal ball today for Jace Howard to Michigan. While we've known that Jace was probably going to Michigan for a while, I find these 2 crystal balls interesting due to the recent developments of Josh Christopher getting a futurecast from Corey Evans, Greg Brown planning to take a visit, and the amount of open scholarships we have being dubious. Perhaps Jace is planning on committing soon? And will he take a scholarship?

Is this worth complaining about or nitpicking?

I don't think I can create a poll, but I say it's nitpicking. People can downvote me if they disagree.

I save my complaints for the far worse thread titles that are so common around here. It was a perfectly good OP. Are we really trying to discourage people from creating useful content just because it wasn't exactly what we wanted? That it doesn't meet some standard that I'd be hard pressed to say any media site meets?

I go back to the old guidance. Justin Feagin is a bad thread title. This was nothing like that.

This isn't true...none of this is true.

Walk-ons don't get ANYthing less than scholarship players except money.

They don't get the free education and I don't believe they get the same stipends (meal money that players use on clothes and apple products). Practice time and all of that has nothing to do with NCAA rules.

Before anyone else posts on this:

I keep hearing that walk-on status is no longer available once someone has taken an official visit. Sounds like bullshit, but I don't know any better. I couldn't find anything reasonable-looking on a quick search. If anyone could link to an authoritative reference I'd be much obliged.

I’ve never heard of such a thing either until people on this board have brought it up.  There is such a term as “Recruited Walk-On”, which leads me to believe you could take an official visit and still walk on.  All walk-on means is that there is no financial obligations by the school.  The only thing remotely close would be in communication between the coaches and the prospect of being honest and saying don’t waste one of YOUR official visits here if you are looking for a scholly....We want you, but can’t pay for you.

Yeah I don't know why people keep saying that. You can't "blueshirt" after taking an official but blueshirting is a football exclusive activity designed to work around the annual limit of 25 guys. I googled this and there is absolutely no mention of this being a real thing.

I work in the recruiting industry for a different sport and this is completely false for that sport. Official visits do not preclude someone from walking on and it happens quite often in the sport I deal with. I would be very surprised if basketball was any different.

Also, walk-ons get the same perks as athletes outside of scholarships and stipends. They get full access to trainers, use of the facilities, practice time, etc.

Right now we are full with no attrition. I don’t think we can take Jace as a scholarship player unless someone transfers, goes to NBA, or decommits.

These are the pieces on the board, in my opinion:

  • Austin Davis (grad transfer?)
  • Adrien Nunez (transfer?)
  • Cole Bajema (transfer?) I sure hope not.
  • Isaiah Livers (NBA?)
  • Terrance Williams (committed, not yet signed)
  • Isaiah Todd (committed, not yet signed)
  • Hunter Dickinson (committed, not yet signed)
  • Josh Cristopher (potential commit)
  • Jace Howard (potential commit, possible walk on)
  • Greg Brown (potential commit)

We ultimately need the number of guys leaving/decommitting   to equal the new commits. I don’t really expect any decommitments, but Todd wouldn’t be surprising at this point.

Because Todd himself said so recently. He basically said he would do what his mother wanted between going to college or a pro league. She's generally thought to be leaning towards him playing overseas. He says he would like to play at Michigan. No one knows how it will turn out.

We're only using 11 of our available 13 scholarships: DeJulius, Simpson, Teske, Livers, Nunez, Wagner, Bajema, Brooks, Johns, Castleton, Davis.

Simpson and Teske graduate are both out of eligibility, so they're gone. Davis graduates so we can tell him to transfer if need be. That's five available scholarships. We have four hard commit currently, so that leaves one more scholarship available given no attrition.

Recruiting three guys for one spot seems reasonable to me. Especially when two of them are five stars with a bunch of other suitors.

I really wish people would stop worrying about open scholarships in both football and basketball.    Football has 6 or 7 more incoming kids than they have spots and yet fans on the board freak out every time a player transfers, goes pro, doesn't sign his LOI or just quits.   You don't think the coaches know where these spots are going to go?  Unless you are on the team or inside the athletic dept just sit back and watch it happen.   It always works out.

If they do somehow land the dream class that is still possible, he could just walk on for a year (assuming he's allowed to) and then go on scholarship after that.  Basically a PWO.

Was kind of thinking he was going to wait until April or so to make his decision, that would've allowed for Todd, Christopher and Brown to make theirs and let the chips fall after that. We are limited on scholarships and have a lot of big fish biting right now. Itll be interesting to see how it plays out.

The timing of Howard deciding soon makes me think he’s going to walk on.  I would think they’d want to leave as many scholarships open (I know, there aren’t really any open right now) as possible with the big time recruits Juwan is still going after.  Of course the deeply BPONE’D side of me says this means more towards how Juwan feels about getting Christopher or hanging on to Todd.
