Well the problem is people idolize people for all the wrong reasons.  Winning football games doesn't make you a role model; it just means you're good at your job.

People idolize athletes and celebrities and the wealthy, but at best they're no better or worse than the average nobody, as far as principles go.  If anything, they're often worse.  OTOH, figures like Norman Borlaug or Chiune Sugihara remain obscure.

"...aren't entirely clean"?  GTFO with that bullshit. Michigan's hands are permanently stained.

We have an entire football facility named after a guy who willfully ignored sexual assault allegations for years. And his statue is out front.

PSU can do whatever the fuck they want.

Step aside, huh.

"These people are bad, but those people over there are also bad so let's move on" is certainly a way to go about life.  A horrible, cynical, psychopathic piece-of-shit way to live, but it's there.

I'm sure the victims of Anderson and Sandusky would be fully on board with, hey there's MORE THAN ONE sexual abuse legacy in the B1G, so they somehow cancel each other out.

I agree UM's hands are stained but that doesn't mean calling out PSU for actively trying to make another stupid decision around Paterno is out of bounds.  I'm pretty comfortable saying that, in fact, PSU should not do whatever the fuck they want if "what they want" is to name a stadium after an asshole who, at best, ignored systemic child sexual abuse by one of his coaches for years.

And yeah, UM should absolutely melt that statue of Bo down and tear his name off that hall.

Fuck that shit.  Just because Michigan's dirty, doesn't make PSU untouchable.  And seriously. . . what the hell??

Yeah Michigan is dirty, and if the Schembechler statue was instead a glass house I'm bringing a fucking onager.

Anyone with a sense of ethics or compassion don't buy that nonsense.  "Evil cancels evil" is unhinged, incoherent, nihilistic absurdity.  You POINT OUT BOTH.  The more glass houses there are, the more I'm sending out invites for a goddamn rock-throwing party until there are no glass houses left.  Fuck glass houses!

Seriously, what the hell is this deranged "we got dirt so don't point at others' dirt" madness going on in here??  It's dismaying to see so many psychopaths crawling out of the woodwork.

In the end, I'm 99.9% sure this won't happen.

The PSU Board of Trustees has a group of folks (Jay Paterno among them) who propose ideas from this from time to time.

But it's always had minority support on the Board.  And probably always will.

So this will die off after a few days.  Rinse and repeat: we've seen stories/proposals like this before and there will be similiar stories/proposals at some point in the future.

Board members like Jay should be more seriously working on PSU's current budget problems.  But why do hard and serious work when there are sideshows like this?  It's almost like Jay is acting like a Washington DC Congressman!

The article makes it clear that the proposal was brought up and then immediately rescinded at the behest of Jay Paterno and others, though the reasoning was less "that's a terrible idea" and more "let's way until a later date to discuss it".  So I guess we'll see.

I will say, and I'll take the negs for it, schools need to stop naming stuff after former coaches and major figures in general, but particularly if you aren't one million percent sure they don't have some pretty massive skeletons in their closets.  Like, they should have ripped the name off Schembechler Hall and taken that statue down but I sort of get places being reticent to tear something down.  But I see no good reason why you'd name something after, at best, a non-controversial individual in your program's history.

Well then lets stop the idolization of all.  People, corporations and more.  Woo hoo look at my latest Nike's made by some kid somewhere in a sweatshop in asia working 18 hours a day for pennies an hour only to be forced by their parents to come back and do it again tomorrow.  But I got the latest pair for $250.00..   Let's celebrate those massive uni deals..   Michigan signed with Jordan Brand..

I don’t have an issue with it.  I wasn’t there and I don’t know what happened.  Paterno seemed like a very good guy for a long time and it isn’t even alleged he did anything affirmatively wrong.  I’m done canceling people.

In general, I'm not the biggest fan of rescinding honors or "cancelling" folks.

But in this case, the statue is down.  Paterno has already been (effectively) cancelled.

So, as of 16-February-2024, the discussion is about whether to UN-cancel him.

And, for various reasons, that's not a very viable choice for the school.

Penn State is the only place that makes Michigan State look competent in every category, especially from a board of trustee perspective. All the way down to having people who are wildly unqualified to serve on the board, like Jay Paterno, who belongs there just like George Perles did at Michigan State.

We've had our own issues for sure, but I can't think of any other program where children were literally raped in the football facility by an emeritus member of the coaching staff and the head coach did nothing about it.

This is just not a good thing… It was a pleasant surprise to see Jay Paterno suggest the proposal be withdrawn.

And - is anyone from business or academia on that board?   The references were toward the University’s Board of Trustees - but, it sounds like a PSU football alumni club instead.

Anybody who thinks there is even the tiniest likelihood that Penn State University will do this in the foreseeable future is a ridiculous idiot who has no inkling of how large public institutions operate today.
