Playoff Chaos Scenario Unlocked: Who ya got and does the committee have the guts to make the right call?

Submitted by ImRightYouKnow on December 2nd, 2023 at 11:39 PM

Michigan and Washington, automatic ins.

FSU, deserves to be in.

One last spot that the committee is dying to give to Bama, but they'd have to go against all previous precedents set regarding head to head wins and undefeated P5 teams mattering.

Does the committee have the guts to make the right call and stonewall their SEC crushes?

What it probably should be:

1) Michigan 2) Washington 3) Texas 4) FSU

What I’d likely bet it’s going to be:

1) Michigan 2) Bama 3) Washington 4) Texas

What I’m afraid it’s going to be:

1) Bama 2) Michigan 3) Georgia 4) Washington

Hopefully the committee does the right thing and pick the 4 most deserving teams.   Why are they deserving?  Because they proved it on the field.   All this media coach effort to change the narrative to the 4 best teams is hogwash.  Then the games and records don’t matter?   The facts are you have 3 undefeated conference champs.   That’s 1,2,3.  Michigan, Washington, and FSU.   You can argue and try and disparage FSU but thats nonsense.  What’s more important? - people’s opinions or what the team has done on the field?   And no it doesn’t matter they don’t have their QB. As someone else pointed out Ohio St won with their third string QB.  The team is the team.  It’s crazy to me that people try and use their predictions (and justifications) about future games as a better data point compared to what the actual game outcomes are.  So for the fourth spot you one loss teams.  You have big12 champ Texas and sec champ Alabama.  Texas beat Alabama head to head so that’s a no brainer Alabama gets left out.   If you don’t like it win your games

I think Michigan will play Bama. That's what the media wants because it's a matchup easy to hype and also because they want Michigan to be exposed in 'classic' fashion.

What the committee will have to explain is how a team they ranked #4 this week, and went and won their conference championship…that the #7 team who beat a similar level team is able to jump them?

And that ONLY happens because of they need to justify Alabama being in.

In the next 24 hours, a speed investigation will be completed into our “wrongdoings”, causing an NCAA emergency meeting and one time special rules to go into effect; resulting in the following seeding:

1. Washington

2. Michigan

3. Philadelphia Eagles

4. Ohio State

Talk about drama and suspense, STAY TUNED.

My picks...

1. Michigan

2. Washington

3. Texas

4. FSU, they went 13-0 and had to use QB3.

SEC shut out? Probably not so 'Bama get in at #4.

If the committee goes against all precedence to leave out FSU. Then they are not beholden to seeding based on record. Bama and Texas jump FSU controversially and so its only fair to play each other again.

If ESPN and the mouthbreather SEC fans had it their way it'd be:

1. Georgia

2. Alabama

3. Ohio State

4. Oregon

They DO NOT WANT Michigan, Washington, Texas. And most certainly not FSU

1.  Michigan

2.  Washington

3.  Alabama or Texas (I say Texas)

4.  Florida State

Left out...

Alabama or Texas (I say Alabama)

Georgia (Screwed themselves with loss)

Would be wonderful to not have any SEC teams in the CFP.

If an undefeated team in a P5 wins all their games and gets left out it means the regular season is somewhat meaningless. FSU found a way to win all their games, Texas and Alabama didn't, that has to mean something. The argument Alabama is way better than earlier in the year also rings a bit hollow when they needed a miracle just to beat Auburn.

skatin@the_palace

Humoring the logic of the TV analysts and the precedent. Shouldn't Texas be left out? If it's more about who you are today plus the undefeated conference champion, Bama's early season loss shouldn't matter right? They beat Georgia which is more impressive than any other win Texas has plus Texas's loss is worse. FSU having the undefeated conference championship will hopefully be enough to squeak in at #4, we move to #1 and Texas is left out in the cold. Ahhh one could hope I guess.

Nah head to head has to mean something, doubly so when it comes on the other teams homefield. Also despite playing how they did today the argument that Alabama is vastly different now than earlier in the year loses some credibility when they needed one of the more unlikely plays of the entire year just to escape Auburn.

Urban Meyer of all people had a great point: if you leave Texas out, every coach is going to their AD tomorrow and saying “cancel every non con game against a Power 5 team, because the committee just proved they can only hurt you. Texas has arguably the best regular season win of anybody (only Michigan over OSU is better, but that was at home) and is a decisive P5 champion. They absolutely cannot be left out if Bama is in.

It should be: Michigan, Washington,Texas, Florida State.

The committee would love to find a way to make it: Michigan, Washington, Alabama, Georgia.

It probably will be: Michigan, Washington, Alabama, Florida St.

They will say it needs to be the 4 best teams.

The 4 best teams are probably

UM

UGA

Bama

OSU

However, UGA and OSU not conference champions.

Most deserving should be

UM

Washington

FSU

Texas (conf champ + beat Bama)

They will do mental gymnastics and create some mix of best 4 and most deserving to ensure that SEC champ Bama gets in, and this will require them to take Texas as well, due to the head to head. Everyone seems to have forgotten that Bama needed a lucky 4th and 35 last second TD to beat mediocre Auburn last week.

FSU will be getting the screw job here, despite beating UF in a tough rivalry game and then winning the ACC championship with their 3rd string QB.

BlueMk1690

The way I see it the SEC champ basically has an auto-bid given the apparent public perception, so we can complain about it all day long and talk about what a travesty is, but it doesn't change anything. Bama is in.

Now the reason there's this public perception is that those teams pretty much always win in the playoffs. The only way to change that is to beat them in the playoffs. If Michigan plays Bama and in classic Michigan fashion shits the bed and loses clearly, then yeah everyone feels confirmed in their view that the SEC deserves to be on a pedestal.

MGoBlue96

December 3rd, 2023 at 12:19 AM ^

Everyone just assuming the SEC will get the nod but it is not like there is precedent for the committee to leave out a P5 undefeated champion just to get them in. It didn't really take mental gymnastics by the committee to have the SEC represented in past playoffs. Until I see it I am not going to see the committee going against the established norm as the likely outcome.

BlueMk1690

December 3rd, 2023 at 12:26 AM ^

The committee already laid the groundwork for this by clarifying they're about picking the 'best teams' not the 'most deserving teams'. The mental gymnastics already have been made.

I think FSU would have had to blow out Louisville with their 3rd string QB to make their case. The fact FSU clearly is a lesser team without Travis is obvious. The committee will 100% take that into consideration.

MGoBlue96

December 3rd, 2023 at 12:30 AM ^

And I think that would more be in their minds if they were comparing one loss teams to one another, but as I said until I see it not going to believe it will be the deciding factor when a P5 team goes undefeated. Particularly when the team in question can claim the most wins against bowl eligible opponents in the country.

BlueMk1690

December 3rd, 2023 at 12:43 AM ^

They will simply say 'the FSU that won those games doesn't exist in that form anymore, so we can ignore it'.

I think it's a risky road to travel down, but that probably won't stop them. They're probably like 'thank god this is the last year of this' because it would set a pretty nasty precedent.

December 3rd, 2023 at 12:19 AM ^

They're going to screw FSU - you can hear it all over the coverage. I don't get it - if Georgia won today but Carson Beck was injured would they have used this logic to drop them out?

No - they'd be an undefeated power-5 champ with three top 25 wins... You'd have to include them because a team is more than one player. There's no way they'd drop Georgia under those conditions. I would be losing my mind if I were a Seminole.

skatin@the_palace

December 3rd, 2023 at 12:20 AM ^

Also FSU won with their 3rd string QB who will NOT be the starting QB for any playoff game. There's a bit of SEC spin going on with that. Granted I haven't seen the 2nd string guy play but there's a month of practices and they won all the damn games.

MeanJoe07

Undefeated conference champs should be in.  I don't care if your offensive lineman all contracted polio at the last second.  Next up 1 loss conference champs.  Which is Texas and FuckAuburn. Texas beat FuckAuburn away so Texas is in. SEC GO FUCK YOURSELF. PAUL FINEBAUM CAN EAT MY SHIT.

WalterWhite_88

I'm probably the only one who thinks this, but I was hoping Georgia would win because I really wanted to see Michigan play Washington in the last ever traditional Rose Bowl. But Georgia ruined it for everyone.

As unfair as it is, I think the committee leaves out FSU.

1. Mich

2. Wash

3. Texas

4. Bama

Logic says 1)M 2)W 3) FSU undefeated Power 5 champs.  4)Texas Power 5 champ that just so happen to beat the other Power 5 champ with 1 loss.  But, money talks.  FSU won’t attract viewers, so they will be left out .  Boo CFP.

10 pt loss at home and your gonna let them jump from 8 to fucking 4 over an extra undefeated ACC champ who won, but is gonna drop a spot?!?  Get the fuck outtttttaaaahere. It took a miracle for Bama to beat 6-6 Auburn and only beat 4-8 Arkansas by 3. FSU has a great defense and they've got a month to prepare with their 2nd string QB who didn't play tonight, but they still won.

Reading through all this- If we have to play Alabama, would you rather play them at the Rose Bowl or Sugar Bowl?  I'd make the argument that against Wash/FSU, the Sugar Bowl is a better venue for us.

badjuju81

December 3rd, 2023 at 12:35 AM ^

They'll rank Washington #1 because they put up gawdy offensive numbers, I fear.  Then we'll be stuck at the Sugar Bowl vs a team from the south.  Or is my BPONE talking?

If they are taking the 4 best teams then they should seed them on who they think is the best. Not who has the best record. If Michigan plays Bama then Bama would be a favorite. When has the 1 seed ever been an underdog against the 4.
