Players on the field with the same number

You likely saw the Memphis punt return Saturday, when Mississippi State failed to 'down' the ball. Did you also notice two #4 players on the field for Memphis? Besides the punt returner, there is also a #4 on the line between the 45-50 yard line when the play starts. It went unnoticed by the refs and the TD counted.

If you missed it, check it out here: https://youtu.be/FFu66fvcqkE

Obviously, Michigan got called for it on Saturday and NIU scored on the very next drive. It made me wonder how often refs miss when this happens. Anyway, the NCAA made a rule last year that limits the amount of players with the same jersey number to two. Not sure this new amendment to the rule is having any effect.

it's probably just popping up bc of expanded rosters due to the covid year. in the past i recall guys popping on a nameless jersey with a different number for a punt. i imagine it's something refs keep track of every play, otherwise ineligible man downfield would never be called

How was this not ruled down?  1st guy knocks it back from end zone - 2nd guy slides and seems to "down" it.

The ball then rests on the turf and THEN the Memphis guy swooped it up.

Just because no whistle?  That's on the refs.

He dropped the bean bag which should indicate placement of a downed ball.

The ref even approaches slowly WITH his hands in the air signaling a clock stoppage (and change of possession). (11 second mark)

This is TOTALLY on the refs.  MSU (Not THAT MSU) got hosed.

Incorrectly. The official who signaled stoppage was wrong. By rule the ball was still live and able to be returned by Memphis. The SEC even released a statement saying as much. Though the ref signaling stoppage (though he was wrong to do so) was supposed to be acknowledged and Memphis ball at the spot.

Seriously, isn't this always going to be a potential problem when you have more than 100 guys on the roster? Either allow a few to exceed 100, mix in a letter ("85A") or do like meteorologists do for hurricanes and start using Greek letters.

I'd love it. 'Tackle made by rho on the ballcarrier epsilon."
