OT - Who's Playing Wordle?
If you haven't been playing Wordle, get ready to get addicted. It's the new fad created by a random guy in Brooklyn for his significant other. He didn't create it to make money (there are no ads whatsoever on the site and there are no paid features), and it has gone absolutely viral. Jimmy Fallon even played it with his audience.
The premise is simple. You get 6 tries to guess a 5 letter word. For every correct letter in the correct spot, you get a green square. For every correct letter in the wrong spot, a yellow square. Basically Mastermind, but with words.
So....who's playing and what's your strategy?

“Adieu” is cheating imo.
January 27th, 2022 at 10:01 AM ^
I’ve been using aerie as my first word
January 27th, 2022 at 10:18 AM ^
AERIE has two e's! You're missing the opportunity to confirm or eliminate a whole letter. I've been using RITES or STARE. The Scrabble bingo (i.e., word that uses all seven letters on your rack) with the most words in it is RETINAS, so figuring down from that to one of those two made sense to me.
January 27th, 2022 at 11:52 AM ^
I use STARE too! That's a coincidence...or maybe not
January 27th, 2022 at 12:58 PM ^
I usually start with TREAD because I irrationally believe they try to avoid words with S.
January 27th, 2022 at 12:59 PM ^
I start with STAEE.
January 27th, 2022 at 10:16 AM ^
Followed by "SPORT" is a solid open...
January 27th, 2022 at 10:24 AM ^
I’ll see your adieu and RAISE you.

January 27th, 2022 at 10:59 AM ^
Yeah- I would often go with ARISE, AROSE. STONE or STORE also good. But, I switch it up everyday.
January 27th, 2022 at 11:42 AM ^
I'm only three days in. So far I've used STEAM each time, but I think changing it up will make it much more interesting.
January 27th, 2022 at 1:38 PM ^
I can't decide...
I'm 20 days in. For a while I started with AROSE and had decent luck. The last three days, I've started with CREST.
Most common consonants are RSTLNCDM and CREST gets four of those. And it feels like consonants are better helpers than vowels. I'm not sure.
January 27th, 2022 at 3:49 PM ^
ARISE for me. And if that totally bricks, I try to get other vowels and common consonants involved. My second word today was CLOUT (to get the O, U, L, and T).
January 27th, 2022 at 1:20 PM ^
Maybe it's just me, but I think 2-3 vowels in guess one is better than 4. Eliminating vowels does limit the words you can make, but it's just as ideal to eliminate some of the more common consonants (RSTLN).
Plus it makes it more fun to start with a new word each day.
January 27th, 2022 at 9:35 AM ^
ME! Love it. Look forward to it every day. It's simple, fun and like you said utterly without bullshit. The creator is sitting on an absolute goldmine but doesn't want money?! Unusual and refreshing.
Strategy is usually go with a word that has commonly used letters but then sometimes just throw out a crazy guess like PRISM.
January 27th, 2022 at 9:52 AM ^
Wordle is on my phone. Lingo's not. ;)
January 27th, 2022 at 9:52 AM ^
It isn't, and the creator has said it isn't an original idea. The only difference is that the layout is super simple and it records your stats.
You can also share how you do on social media without giving anything away (just search Wordle on Twitter and you'll see what I mean).
January 27th, 2022 at 10:03 AM ^
Ahhh, I was trying to remember what that was called, used to play that a bunch
January 27th, 2022 at 12:42 PM ^
I initially thought Wordle was an app so I looked for it in the app store. It is not. But Wordus is and you can play again and again if you are bored during meetings or what have you. I still do the Wordle of the day but use Wordus throughout the day when bored.
January 27th, 2022 at 9:36 AM ^
R-A-T-I-O (#2 thre #6 letters)
C-L-U-E-S (#1 letter & #8 thru #11)
N-Y-M-P-H (#7 letter, #13 thru #15, and #19 "Y")
Beyond that, no vowels remaining, and letters used in less than 15% of the English language. Already bored with this game. I enjoy NYT Spelling Bee much more.
January 27th, 2022 at 9:37 AM ^
Sounds like you aren't using hard mode. Step yo game up.
January 27th, 2022 at 9:44 AM ^
Using this sequence assumes no prior hits, so it still works in Hard Mode.
January 27th, 2022 at 9:54 AM ^
But if any of the letters hit in the first or second try (which they likely would), your sequence can't be completed.
As the previous commenter said, step yo game up.
January 27th, 2022 at 10:05 AM ^
How are you going yo have no hits?
If you did today's and used R A T I O in hard mode you would have the T and the O out of place meaning you cant use C L U E S or N Y M P H
If you go for time in basic mode it's easy. Just type 3 words with all different letters. If you try to solve in 3 or use hard mode it's more challenging.
January 27th, 2022 at 9:53 AM ^
what exactly does hard mode do? haven't tried it yet
January 27th, 2022 at 9:55 AM ^
I just learned about it today. When you get letters/their spots correct, you have to use that knowledge in subsequent guesses.
You can't use a random word to identify more letters.
January 27th, 2022 at 9:59 AM ^
Didn’t realize there was a hard mode, I’ve basically been playing it that way anyway
January 27th, 2022 at 10:15 AM ^
Same here, but now I see how you could do otherwise to get more letters. Not actually sure what would be harder
January 27th, 2022 at 10:00 AM ^
Came here to say "hard mode".
January 27th, 2022 at 1:23 PM ^
I'm doing Wordle, Spelling Bee and the NYT crossword every night. Which of course means I'm now like an infant with an all-night feeding schedule: Wordle at midnight, sleep for a bit. Spelling Bee at 2:00AM (central), crossword, sleep a bit more. It's kind of insane, but it's as if my insomnia now has a fixed schedule which may actually work better than not.
January 27th, 2022 at 9:40 AM ^
I think the fact that everyone gets exactly one play per day is a big part of the popularity. Nothing like artificial scarcity to drive up demand!
January 27th, 2022 at 9:53 AM ^
Buffalo Trace approves this message!
January 27th, 2022 at 10:28 AM ^
BT is good, but there are so many equal options available on the liquor store shelves.
Also, I'm not good with the words and spelling. Sudoku is my puzzle of the day.
January 27th, 2022 at 10:53 AM ^
BT is good, but there are so many equal options available on the liquor store shelves.
And you've just underscored the point of artificial scarcity driving demand.
January 27th, 2022 at 11:04 AM ^
They tricked me once, but I haven't purchased a second bottle!
January 27th, 2022 at 11:55 AM ^
I should have been more specific. Buffalo Trace is available everywhere. Buffalo Trace’s other brands - Taylor, Weller, Blanton’s - are kept scarce on purpose to drive demand.
January 27th, 2022 at 1:24 PM ^
That and making everybody guess the same word each day...just pure genius from a social media trend perspective.
January 27th, 2022 at 9:40 AM ^
I like it, it's something to do every day for a couple of minutes. But you then have to wait until the next day so you aren't tempted to sit and play it for hours on end. I don't have a phone attached to me at all times like some, I don't like games because I get bored with them quickly and don't really care to spend more than 5 minutes on anything after being on a computer all day for work. But this hits the right spot of something quick to do, but not overbearing.
January 27th, 2022 at 9:45 AM ^
I just hit new game after solving it and play again instantly. Who care how many days you have been playing or what your score is. If you enjoy the game, just play a new game.
January 27th, 2022 at 10:32 AM ^
I don't think you're playing the same game you think everyone else is. If you're playing with an app that gives you multiple words per day then you are playing something different. The Wordle most people are referring to is a website and only posts one word each day.
January 27th, 2022 at 1:12 PM ^
Yeah, as aleng said above, I think you are playing a different game. I don't get a 'next game' button, only something along the lines of 'Next Wordle available in 14:02:33 with no button. So I just close it and the next day hit it up again.
January 27th, 2022 at 9:41 AM ^
I enjoy playing but sharing daily wordle results is as interesting as your fantasy football team.
January 27th, 2022 at 9:44 AM ^
I usually open with BPONE, two vowels and a very common letter in N.
January 27th, 2022 at 9:46 AM ^
I use as many vowels as possible in the first move and try to hit rstlne (the wheel of fortune hack) to try and identify as many letters/positions as possible. 7/7 and done by the 5th round.
January 27th, 2022 at 9:47 AM ^
He didn't invent anything. This is just Lingo with another name
January 27th, 2022 at 9:48 AM ^
I haven't, but I've noticed a bunch of Facebook friends posting their daily update every day. I'm not quite sure what kind of response they want? "Good game?"
January 27th, 2022 at 9:57 AM ^
^^This.
Wordle does look like a fun, thoughtful, addicting game. But, because it's a Facebook "look-at-me" fad, I just can't engage. My intrigue is outweighed by my (irrational) fear of being swept away by the hive mentality.
January 27th, 2022 at 11:20 AM ^
You should just do it and not tell anyone. It's a good little brain exercise with a limited time commitment.
January 27th, 2022 at 9:48 AM ^
The OGs are all sick of it by now -- everyone's constant facebook and twitter posting ruined it. It was legit for about two weeks before everyone's great aunt started posting on FB every day.

Offensive guards play wordle?
