OT - Who's Playing Wordle?

Submitted by EastCoast Esq. on January 27th, 2022 at 9:28 AM

If you haven't been playing Wordle, get ready to get addicted. It's the new fad created by a random guy in Brooklyn for his significant other. He didn't create it to make money (there are no ads whatsoever on the site and there are no paid features), and it has gone absolutely viral. Jimmy Fallon even played it with his audience.

The premise is simple. You get 6 tries to guess a 5 letter word. For every correct letter in the correct spot, you get a green square. For every correct letter in the wrong spot, a yellow square. Basically Mastermind, but with words.

So....who's playing and what's your strategy?

AERIE has two e's! You're missing the opportunity to confirm or eliminate a whole letter. I've been using RITES or STARE. The Scrabble bingo (i.e., word that uses all seven letters on your rack) with the most words in it is RETINAS, so figuring down from that to one of those two made sense to me.

ME!  Love it.  Look forward to it every day.  It's simple, fun and like you said utterly without bullshit.  The creator is sitting on an absolute goldmine but doesn't want money?! Unusual and refreshing.

Strategy is usually go with a word that has commonly used letters but then sometimes just throw out a crazy guess like PRISM.

R-A-T-I-O (#2 thre #6 letters)

C-L-U-E-S (#1 letter & #8 thru #11)

N-Y-M-P-H (#7 letter, #13 thru #15, and #19 "Y")

Beyond that, no vowels remaining, and letters used in less than 15% of the English language. Already bored with this game. I enjoy NYT Spelling Bee much more.

How are you going yo have no hits?

If you did today's and used R A T I O in hard mode you would have the  T and the O out of place meaning you cant use  C L U E S or N Y M P H

If you go for time in basic mode it's easy.  Just type 3 words with all different letters. If you try to solve in 3 or use hard mode it's more challenging.

I'm doing Wordle, Spelling Bee and the NYT crossword every night.  Which of course means I'm now like an infant with an all-night feeding schedule: Wordle at midnight, sleep for a bit.  Spelling Bee at 2:00AM (central), crossword, sleep a bit more.  It's kind of insane, but it's as if my insomnia now has a fixed schedule which may actually work better than not.

I think the fact that everyone gets exactly one play per day is a big part of the popularity.  Nothing like artificial scarcity to drive up demand!

I like it, it's something to do every day for a couple of minutes.  But you then have to wait until the next day so you aren't tempted to sit and play it for hours on end.  I don't have a phone attached to me at all times like some, I don't like games because I get bored with them quickly and don't really care to spend more than 5 minutes on anything after being on a computer all day for work.  But this hits the right spot of something quick to do, but not overbearing.

I use as many vowels as possible in the first move and try to hit rstlne (the wheel of fortune hack) to try and identify as many letters/positions as possible.  7/7 and done by the 5th round.

I haven't, but I've noticed a bunch of Facebook friends posting their daily update every day.  I'm not quite sure what kind of response they want?  "Good game?"

The OGs are all sick of it by now -- everyone's constant facebook and twitter posting ruined it. It was legit for about two weeks before everyone's great aunt started posting on FB every day.
