OT - Who's Playing Wordle?
If you haven't been playing Wordle, get ready to get addicted. It's the new fad created by a random guy in Brooklyn for his significant other. He didn't create it to make money (there are no ads whatsoever on the site and there are no paid features), and it has gone absolutely viral. Jimmy Fallon even played it with his audience.
The premise is simple. You get 6 tries to guess a 5 letter word. For every correct letter in the correct spot, you get a green square. For every correct letter in the wrong spot, a yellow square. Basically Mastermind, but with words.
So....who's playing and what's your strategy?

Everyone from what I hear.

You know who's playing World? Every single woman I am friends with on Facebook, that's who, and they post about it daily. :-D
January 27th, 2022 at 9:58 AM ^
And now you have something to talk to them about to lure them into your lair!
January 27th, 2022 at 10:02 AM ^
"Hey baby, wanna come back to my place for some hot tubbing, fortified wine, and a game of Wordle?"
January 27th, 2022 at 10:17 AM ^
I mean, go with what works.
January 27th, 2022 at 10:10 AM ^
This is a safe space, no here will judge you for admitting no women would willingly befriend a killer clown
January 27th, 2022 at 10:20 AM ^
There were literally thousands of women who used to send love letters to Ted Bundy, Richard Speck, etc. I am pretty sure I, too, can find love...

The sewer/drainage system aspect of your existence might present a barrier to your courtship process

Got my first "2" this morning...lucky strike

LOL...nice
January 27th, 2022 at 9:52 AM ^
Sounds like a fun game. Who is this Jimmy Fallon guy?
January 27th, 2022 at 9:52 AM ^
I’m at 100% since starting 11 days ago and solved today’s in 2 turns.
I enjoy Wordle, but find it annoying when people brag about their results.
January 27th, 2022 at 10:34 AM ^
... as I brag about my results.
January 27th, 2022 at 1:33 PM ^
As the #OxfordDictionary Guy, don't you have an unfair advantage?
January 27th, 2022 at 1:33 PM ^
Congrats, you just annoyed yourself!
January 27th, 2022 at 9:56 AM ^
I got lucky and got it in four tries. I started with "penis", but that didn't get me much. Now I have to wait until tomorrow for another one?
January 27th, 2022 at 10:30 AM ^
Similar results with penis in life.
January 27th, 2022 at 9:57 AM ^
It's pretty fun. Simple, short, clever. I get most of the biggies out of the way in the first two guesses. That and what's left on the keyboard is enough to figure it out in the remaining guesses for me. When the "answer" has double-letters, it's a little trickier (e.g., "K-N-O-L-L" was a tough one).
S-H-A-R-E then M-O-U-N-T
C-R-E-A-M then P-O-S-I-T
January 27th, 2022 at 9:57 AM ^
Usually start with STARE and move on from there. Haven’t missed one yet and the most tries I’ve needed is 5.

By the way, for those of you who are music fans, there's Byrdle. It's Wordle with only music concepts / figures. It seems to be much, much more difficult.
And if you're looking for something kind of silly and using "4 letter words," there's Sweardle.
I'm sure there are others, but those are the ones my wife has found.
January 27th, 2022 at 10:15 AM ^
There's also LEWDLE, which unlike sweardle is five letters. As an example, my 3/6 tally yesterday was pubEs, fElCH, CHODE.
Sorry for lack of link, as I am on mobile, but it's easily googled.
January 27th, 2022 at 10:03 AM ^
I open with ROAST and go from there. I don't have FB or Twitter so no idea what anyone else is doing but fun little competition with my wife.
January 27th, 2022 at 10:17 AM ^
First word is “Stair” for me, then I use words (or letters from now that I’m playing on hard) from “Honed” and “Lucky”, and if necessary the letters “MWFGP”. That’s basically the most common letters used in relative order. I started using “adieu”, but found it more helpful to emphasize more consonants, since you can assume vowels are in there. Generally, I’m getting it in three to four rounds with a few second rounders.
January 27th, 2022 at 10:25 AM ^
For real fun, I recommend the Russian version:
January 27th, 2022 at 10:50 AM ^
I hear this is all the rage in "the" Ukraine. But you wouldn't know about that... yet.
January 27th, 2022 at 10:34 AM ^
I generally try and guess the word instead of using most common letter algorithms. It makes it a bit more fun, for me, and I get it right faster in many cases... except where I don't.
That didn't say much other than, I'm figuring it out and having fun.
I'd say I'm more in the McCarthy mode, run around and wing it, than Cade play it safe. But the consequences of failure are pretty low.
January 27th, 2022 at 10:47 AM ^
Started Saturday, prior to today I needed 3,3,3,3,2(!) guesses to solve. Today was my first 4 and im still fucking pissed. Going to my 3rd guess today I only needed to guess the first letter, there were two obvious choices. To quote that old knight at the end of one of my favorite movies, I “chose poorly”.
January 27th, 2022 at 10:54 AM ^
First word: LATER
Second: SCION
Third if needed: DUMPY
January 27th, 2022 at 11:46 AM ^
Dude, play on hard mode. If your score doesn't have an asterisk next to it, it didn't happen.
January 27th, 2022 at 11:00 AM ^
Not to humblebrag but I did pretty well on today's Wordle:
January 27th, 2022 at 11:05 AM ^
I've been using words with three+ vowels for my first word. I've kinda settled on POISE lately.
I love to start my mornings with Wordle & coffee before getting into the grind of the day.

I found another site that has multiple words per day if you really want to succumb to the addiction.
January 27th, 2022 at 11:08 AM ^
Yesterday tied my worst showing -- 5 turns. That word was WHACK!
January 27th, 2022 at 12:01 PM ^
Day before had me at 5 attempts. SUGAR. So dumb.
January 27th, 2022 at 12:02 PM ^
Yes, yes it was!

Some day people may ask, “Why were we posting our Wordle results on social media? Should we also have posted our daily New York Times Spelling Bee scores & Peloton results? Shouldn't we just have been trying to find Waldo or name all the Beatles’ songs in a picture?”
January 27th, 2022 at 11:41 AM ^
I have blocked the word on my feed.
January 27th, 2022 at 11:44 AM ^
I have quite a few different words I will use as my first word. Using the exact same word every single day is kinda boring. The most common word I use as a first word though is SOARE. SIREN is a close 2nd. I've been playing this for months.
January 27th, 2022 at 12:00 PM ^
32 games now, I got in early!
I know the words to use to truly limit your attempts but I figure I'll never get it on one attempt if I continually use those words so I make it more fun and switch up my word usage .
January 27th, 2022 at 12:01 PM ^
I wrote some code on an Excel spreadsheet that performs a lookup on either common or "scrabble-related" words based on your Wordle guesses. I've only been playing for a couple weeks and so far all the words have been found in my common word list (2500 words vs 9400 tough ones).
I used it today and got my solution in 3 guesses. I used ADIEU and STORM as my first two guesses.
January 27th, 2022 at 2:03 PM ^
I imagine that OUIJA might not be a bad starter, given all the vowels.
January 27th, 2022 at 12:16 PM ^
I go for the words with the most popular consonants. It's easier for me to plug in vowels than vice versa. Isn't the original Wordle guy from London? I don't know. I downloaded a knockoff and I guessed 'ENEMY' and it said I got the N and M in the right places, the Es in the wrong places and the Y was totally wrong. Is that even possible??
January 27th, 2022 at 2:17 PM ^
ANIME
January 27th, 2022 at 8:31 PM ^
I guess I was thinking both Es belonged, instead of the app repeating that one E was out of place, oh well...
January 27th, 2022 at 12:17 PM ^
Word was mount my first guess was round for some odd reason and my second guess was mount. I should probably retire now.
January 27th, 2022 at 12:46 PM ^
Mostly do it because my 11 yr old son likes to do it an compares his results to mine. I tend to start with ATONE or STEAM or RATES
January 27th, 2022 at 12:53 PM ^
Just learned hard mode makes my strategy useless. Guess I need to try hard mode.
January 27th, 2022 at 1:38 PM ^
It’s Mastermind with letters in place of colors.
January 27th, 2022 at 2:19 PM ^
Except you actually have to form valid words. Mastermind is just putting in random colors with no restrictions.
