OT - Who's Playing Wordle?

Submitted by EastCoast Esq. on January 27th, 2022 at 9:28 AM

If you haven't been playing Wordle, get ready to get addicted. It's the new fad created by a random guy in Brooklyn for his significant other. He didn't create it to make money (there are no ads whatsoever on the site and there are no paid features), and it has gone absolutely viral. Jimmy Fallon even played it with his audience.

The premise is simple. You get 6 tries to guess a 5 letter word. For every correct letter in the correct spot, you get a green square. For every correct letter in the wrong spot, a yellow square. Basically Mastermind, but with words.

So....who's playing and what's your strategy?

I’m at 100% since starting 11 days ago and solved today’s in 2 turns.

I enjoy Wordle, but find it annoying when people brag about their results.

It's pretty fun.  Simple, short, clever.  I get most of the biggies out of the way in the first two guesses.  That and what's left on the keyboard is enough to figure it out in the remaining guesses for me.  When the "answer" has double-letters, it's a little trickier (e.g., "K-N-O-L-L" was a tough one).

S-H-A-R-E then M-O-U-N-T

C-R-E-A-M then P-O-S-I-T

By the way, for those of you who are music fans, there's Byrdle. It's Wordle with only music concepts / figures. It seems to be much, much more difficult.

And if you're looking for something kind of silly and using "4 letter words," there's Sweardle.

I'm sure there are others, but those are the ones my wife has found.

First word is “Stair” for me, then I use words (or letters from now that I’m playing on hard) from “Honed” and “Lucky”, and if necessary the letters “MWFGP”. That’s basically the most common letters used in relative order. I started using “adieu”, but found it more helpful to emphasize more consonants, since you can assume vowels are in there. Generally, I’m getting it in three to four rounds with a few second rounders.

I generally try and guess the word instead of using most common letter algorithms. It makes it a bit more fun, for me, and I get it right faster in many cases... except where I don't.

That didn't say much other than, I'm figuring it out and having fun.

I'd say I'm more in the McCarthy mode, run around and wing it, than Cade play it safe.  But the consequences of failure are pretty low.

Started Saturday, prior to today I needed 3,3,3,3,2(!) guesses to solve. Today was my first 4 and im still fucking pissed. Going to my 3rd guess today I only needed to guess the first letter, there were two obvious choices. To quote that old knight at the end of one of my favorite movies, I “chose poorly”.

I've been using words with three+ vowels for my first word. I've kinda settled on POISE lately.

I love to start my mornings with Wordle & coffee before getting into the grind of the day.

Some day people may ask, “Why were we posting our Wordle results on social media? Should we also have posted our daily New York Times Spelling Bee scores & Peloton results? Shouldn't we just have been trying to find Waldo or name all the Beatles’ songs in a picture?”

I have quite a few different words I will use as my first word. Using the exact same word every single day is kinda boring. The most common word I use as a first word though is SOARE. SIREN is a close 2nd. I've been playing this for months.

32 games now, I got in early!

I know the words to use to truly limit your attempts but I figure I'll never get it on one attempt if I continually use those words so I make it more fun and switch up my word usage .

I wrote some code on an Excel spreadsheet that performs a lookup on either common or "scrabble-related" words based on your Wordle guesses. I've only been playing for a couple weeks and so far all the words have been found in my common word list (2500 words vs 9400 tough ones).

I used it today and got my solution in 3 guesses.  I used ADIEU and STORM as my first two guesses.

I go for the words with the most popular consonants. It's easier for me to plug in vowels than vice versa. Isn't the original Wordle guy from London? I don't know. I downloaded a knockoff and I guessed 'ENEMY' and it said I got the N and M in the right places, the Es in the wrong places and the Y was totally wrong. Is that even possible??

Mostly do it because my 11 yr old son likes to do it an compares his results to mine.  I tend to start with ATONE or STEAM or RATES
