My vegan in-laws are visiting so we’re ordering Chinese. (But it’s the really good Peter Chang’s stuff so that’s okay! )
December 25th, 2023 at 12:51 PM ^
Prime Rib with asparagus, green beans, mashed potatoes, bread from Cheesecake Factory, moscato for adults, and for dessert Mississippi Mud and an apple pie.
December 26th, 2023 at 4:32 AM ^
Cheesecake Factory bread has so much sugar in it, should just call that dessert!
December 25th, 2023 at 12:53 PM ^
Prime rib, mashed potatoes with gravy, garden salad, roasted brussel sprouts with bacon, and mac and cheese for the kids as an additional side.
December 25th, 2023 at 12:54 PM ^
Beef tenderloin, parmesan crusted potatoes, honey sriracha carrots, asparagus and Sanders Bumpy Cake. And a smattering of bourbon throughout the day to keep it on time.

Doing something decidely non-traditional and making cumin lamb noodles with hand-pulled biang biang noodles and unhealthy amounts of garlic and chili oil. If you live in NYC, these are the signature dish of X'ian Famous Foods and hopefully mine will turn out looking something like this:

I am sure it is more than chickens that are nervous around your place. Given your diet and number of kids and chores I am wondering if most things around there have developed a hearing problem when you call them? ;)

Christmas Day is for mostly appetizer type stuff. Christmas Eve dinner is beef tenderloin with horseradish sauce, Alaskan king crab legs, smashed baby potatoes, and asparagus.
On a related note, one of my Christmas gifts this morning was a 2-liter bottle of Black Cherry Vernors that my in-laws brought from Michigan. It's the little things that count!
EDIT: and I almost forgot, my youngest made a batch of peanut butter blossom and gingerbread cookies (though the latter are in nontraditional shapes, like penguins and bells; I guess she couldn't find the little man cut out).
December 25th, 2023 at 11:17 PM ^
I tried the black cherry Vernors this past summer. It was quite good; I made an ice cream float with it.
December 26th, 2023 at 4:37 AM ^
Vernors is now owned by Dr. Pepper Snapple Group. It’s widely available in chain grocery stores nationwide. Now labeled as ginger “soda”

Still the rare find out of state, but so worth the weird looks from people that don't know how good it is...

Latino so we did most of our stuff yesterday but usually posole, a special cheese spaghetti and a new poblano spaghetti, mashed potatoes, sometimes tamales. Then usually some rompope (like a Mexican egg nog liquor is the best way to describe it) with assorted pan dulce

Siri…Wikipedia entry for “rompope”…

Beef tenderloin, Yorkshire pudding and Homemade horseradish sauce for dinner, and some veggies. Kielbasa as a starter before dinner, and potentially a charcuterie board.
Dessert is homemade cheesecake, chocolate fondue (was supposed to get made yesterday but didn’t) and leftover cookies.

Lasagna today.

Making one of those tomorrow, with a bit of a twist, more of a Bolognese with diced onions and carrots than traditional marinara sauce. Made it a couple months ago, and it was fantastic.

Ham, two kinds of taters (white and sweet), a couple of veggies, cranberry sauce (Mom loves it always), and punkin pie for dessert.
Appetizers are simple. Schuler's Bar-Cheese, summer sausage, and crackers.

My family loves dressing/stuffing, and since we wanted to break from our usual rotation of beef and turkey, I got it into my head to try to make a dressing for ham. Still not really sure if this is already a thing or not, but I found a dressing with cranberries and sausage, leeks and apples that sounded like it would work, and used some gluten-free bread for the croutons, since my daughter was recently diagnosed with Hashimoto's. Made it yesterday, and will crisp up today, since dressing always seems to taste better re-heated. Got a Frick ham (?), and made an orange glaze for it with oranges, marmalade, and fresh-squeezed Florida oranges, reluctantly throwing in some fresh pineapple juice.
Making some rice pilaf with onions and parsley, brussels sprouts with crumbled bacon and a little maple syrup--trying not to let the whole thing became a big sweet mess, but celebrate the pig! Have some Washington State Riesling, and my wife is mixing up a sorrel rum punch as we speak.
Last night, we had my family's traditional oyster stew and caesar salad, and the stew was--for me--heaven. But my daughter is less enthusiastic about it than she was in the old days; next year I'll figure out something else.

Mostaccioli and fettuccine. The great grandchildren want pasta; Christmas is their day. (Not my great grandchildren, I'm not quite that old.)
We had ham for the extended family gathering last week. Tonight will be simpler.

I made a braised brisket in a sweet and savory just, with Mac and cheese, roasted Brussels sprouts, and honey-ginger glazed carrots. We've got rice pudding for dessert.

Vegan field roast (tastes like cardboard but I'm used to it, though this year it was not easy finding the best tasting versions...stores didn't sell them or sold out early) with garlic green beans and soy infused mashed potatoes...and a Tums.
Everyone else gets Rib Roast on the bone (not XM quality but the best Bezos can provide) topped with Horseyradish, and breve buttered mashed potatoes...we share the green beans. Brother brought an awesome salad to boot.
Cherry cheesecake for desert. First time doing that...so good. Life is a yummy compromise sometimes.
Very touching grace mentioning our good fortune and the plight of others that dominate our thoughts and prayers.
Truly great to be a Michigan MGoWolverine!

An SEC spread for a B1G family. Fried catfish, greens, mac and cheese. Key lime cheesecake or sweet potato pie for dessert.
The key lime is a new thing I'm trying, after taking the cheesecake crown from my wife on Thanksgiving.
I was helping her out by making rhe cheesecake in a time crunch, and somehow, my product ended up being superior. Now I'm the Kang!
Blame it on my wrist!

Thanksgiving Dinner: The Sequel.
It's a great meal, so why not have it twice. Also, having a bird for Christmas is kinda the tradition and what I grew up with, so I'm always gonna have a preference for it.
December 25th, 2023 at 2:16 PM ^
It's just the wife and me, so nothing too elaborate ...
... but that said, the other day user "Ray" posted a link to a Butter Chicken recipe (comment link), so I went to an Indian grocery and bought garam masala, curry, and red pepper chili and made it.
Oh my goodness, it's delicious. I made the stove-top variant, rather than the InstantPot process.
So tonight it's leftovers, which for me is a very good thing. I love leftovers, especially for dishes like that because the flavors have had time to really meld.

Standing Rib Roast, Yorkshire pudding (regular and gluten free), strip house potatoes romanoff, vichy carrots, cranberry sauce and brussels sprouts
December 25th, 2023 at 2:26 PM ^
Standing rib roast, Yorkshire pudding, balsamic glazed carrots, mashed potatoes with gravy with deviled eggs as an appetizer. Sanders fudge bumpie cake for dessert with vanilla ice cream. Also, to wash down dessert, some nice port wine from Ficklin Vineyards in Fresno, CA. If you love port wine, you need to check this place out.
December 26th, 2023 at 4:49 AM ^
Port…from Fresno? No, just no.
December 26th, 2023 at 2:51 PM ^
The vines are from Portugal and were planted in the late 1940s after WWII. The climate in the Fresno area is very similar to port growing regions in Portugal. The wine master knows what he is doing, too. There's 40 year old port in their inventory.

My in-laws do taco Christmas. I hate it. We spent one year with my family and that was the year taco Christmas took over with her family and it’s now 10+ years running. I’ve offered to cook the turkey to no avail…19/20 people prefer taco Christmas.
