OT: Tate Martell Loses QB Competition to Freshman at Miami

Submitted by CincyBlue on August 12th, 2019 at 11:52 AM

@Brett_McMurphy

Freshman Jarren Williams has been named Miami’s starting QB for opener vs. Florida. Williams won a 3-way battle w/sophomore N’Kosi Perry & sophomore Tate Martell

................No word if Tate has entered the transfer portal again.

Don't think this makes much sense.

If a coach says this when its not true..then wouldn't everyone actually on the team think that was BS? The players (and 'insiders' to a degree) know who is performing and who isn't. A coach blowing smoke for the sole purpose of 'motivating' a guy would loss credibility w/in locker room.

Besides...if guy at the super critical QB-position needs to be 'motivated' by such games then I'd be real concerned with their self-motivation and leadership skills.

Everything in that article could be 100% true and it is still irrelevant. OSU doesn't play Michigan for 3 and 1/2 months and 11 games. So so so much can happen between now and then:

Projected backup is legit and becomes great

Fields figures it out over the course of the season

The offense goes back to running the QB 20 times (Fields can definitely do that) and throws it 15 times a game

The offense takes a serious step backwards, but the defense improves dramatically

FAU and Cincinnati probably have a serious interest in what's going in Columbus as they get Ohio State within a month. Michigan . . . just take care of your own business.

He was actually tied for 9th... coincidentally with another QB.  Brock Berlin.  Do you remember him?  Neither do I.

He went UF, couldn't win the job and sat for two years, transferred to Miami and was required to sit one, was named the starter and was bad his junior year (12 TDs, 17 Int's), and was OK as a senior.

If you're going to invoke his 247 rating, that's the most direct comparable.

LOL. I really wanted him to stay at OSU because he is such a douche, no offense to douches, and is a great villain to cheer against.  Watching him on QB1 was insightful.

Not totally surprising. Tate is a QB recruited to play a specific offense (Meyer's) whose skill sets dont translate to the offense they are running in Miami IMO.  My guess is if J.T. (he was short) Barrett similarly transferred he too would get beaten out.

Meyer knew what he wanted at QB to operate his run-heavy spread offense.  Braxton Miller, J.T. (he was short) Barrett and Tate Martell were all very similar in what they do well (run the ball) and what they struggle at (throwing the ball).

Barrett and Shea Patterson are the same height and it's highly unlikely Barrett could only play for Urban Meyer. He was a decent thrower, not great for a top tier team, but better than most of the starters in the Big Ten.

Martell was a 5* recruit that lots of high level schools pursued despite his lack of height. Miami was willing to fit the offense to his strengths if he was good enough. At this point, I don't think he would be great in any offense, including Meyer's. He probably needs to transfer again to a lesser program.

According to OSU people, the biggest difference between JT Barrett and Tate Martell was how they conducted themselves.  Tate is more athletic, faster and had the higher ceiling.

JT shows up as a FR with no path to the starting job coming off an injury, settles in and starts to insert himself into leadership training, takes to the film room, hangs around Tom Herman and becomes a virtual assistant coach. Paid off, as a RSFR he got a trial by fire and wound up going 11-1 as a starter.  There is a reason a rather slow, largely incapable passer left OSU with just about ever career QB record in the books, the dude worked his butt off.  I know we're not supposed to compliment our rivals but this guy was solid.

Tate shows up as a FR with JT Barrett and Dwayne Haskins ahead of him and pitches a fit when he doesn't play.  Meyer has to sooth him and he almost left during his FR season.  SO year comes around, Haskins is clearly the better QB after beating out Joe Burrow and Tate in the spring.  Fall camp, Meyer is suspended and Tate has to be cajoled by Day into staying, he almost quit during camp.

Ryan Day knew damn well Martell wasn't good enough as a player and even worse as a leader. He also knew bringing in Fields would be the last straw for Martell at OSU.

In hindsight, he might as well have remained at OSU (he clearly would have lost to the Fields). At least he would be on a team with more wins.

There was something oddly unsettling about his relationship with his sister on QB1. Kind of weirded me out a little.

That whole family seemed a little off, now that I think about it. Wondering if there isn't a bit of Todd Marinovich there.

The last year or so has had to have been one massive slice of humble pie for Tate Martell. I remember when he came out of HS he was supposed to be the next big thing. Like an upgraded on-field edition of Johnny Manziel. Came from a powerhouse program in Vegas, not sure he ever lost a game as a starter, won a few state titles, etc. Went to go play for Urban Meyer and one of the top programs in the country, and everything was lining up for him to take over for Haskins and continue the line of dominance.

Fast forward to now, he's a backup for a meh Miami program. Beat out by a freshman, so that means that as long as Martell stays at Miami, he won't be starting, barring injury to the guy in front of him. Bet he's regretting leaving Columbus now. Had he not, there was probably a >50% he was starting this season.

Martell did what he thought was best for himself, and in the end, I can't blame him for that. But he also ran out of town before spring camp even started. To the outside observer, that says "running away from competition." If that is indeed what happened, then its hard for me to feel bad for him. I mean hell, Brandon Peters had less of a chance for starting for Michigan next year than Martell did for starting for OSU, and he still stuck it out through spring camp.

Tate Martell's football career may effectively be over as of today.

There is room to argue the opposite point; that leaving before spring camp was a smarter decision to allow him to transfer in somewhere and learn the playbook and build relationships, while staying through spring and transferring would look like running away from competition because he would have spent time sizing up the competition and getting a bit of info on where he stands on the roster. Either way you make appropriate points and, as I stated before, you get multiple +1s from me just for your username

Not worthy of a new thread, but word out of Madison is Mertz is now behind Coans and possibly another QB. That should bode well for our game against the Badgers, especially if they can't name a clear #1 coming out of camp.

yeah that's good news. If Mertz isn't going to be a instant impact freshman starter, that game will be a win if we can limit Taylor's damage on the ground. He'll get yards but contain him from breaking big ones and score when we've got the ball, and we'll walk away with a win in Madison

I would not sleep on Jack Coan. He made some big throws in a few games last year and is getting a good amount of buzz in Madison this spring/fall.  He doesn't have to be a world-beater with that running game, just needs to be able to nail a few clutch throws, which is exactly what Hornibrook did against Michigan a couple years ago.
