OT - Summer Plans?

Submitted by canzior on April 20th, 2021 at 10:33 AM

Has anyone made any summer plans to make up for being limited the last 12-14 months??  Got anything fun going on?  Professionally, personally?

I live in the DC area (northern VA) and flights to Paris are about half price & many have no change fees if purchased before a certain date.  Business class to Paris is about $1200 and trips to Dubai are $750 last I checked.   I'm going to try to take a trip before the end of summer.

(Can we do this without delving into a debate on covid & vaccinations perhaps?)

Nice trip.  Mt. Washington area is awesome, lot to do in summer, especially hiking and rafting.  North Conway and Jackson offer some great eating options.  Providence is nice.  East Side around Brown is fun for walking around and people watching, Federal Hill offers some excellent Italian food options (Camille's, Old Canteen and Siena are great).  Great and easy day trips from Providence are Newport or Narragansett.

Next weekend we set up our camper at our seasonal site.  From 1 May to 31 October.  It's great.  Once it's set up we can come and go without having to tow it.

Fishing, hiking, boating, swimming and beers by the camp fire.  That's my idea of a great summer.

Also, set up to watch a few UM football games on our outside TV.  I never said we rough it.  LOL.

Nothing really, life is in a weird spot right now so our focus is elsewhere. We have a long weekend planned with friends and all the kids Labor Day weekend, so that's the big one to look forward to now. 4 more months!

In later August, my wife and I are taking a trip to see the national parks in North Dakota and South Dakota (T. Roosevelt, Badlands, and Wind Cave).  We're also touring Custer State Park in SD which is supposed to be beautiful.  We have a goal of seeing all (or most) of the national parks in the continental U.S.   We have a ways to go though, since they keep creating more NP's all the time!

We may go up north in Michigan too at some point, as well as visit our daughter in D.C.

Custer State Park is indeed very beautiful; excellent addition to the agenda. If you have ever seen National Treasure 2 (of all movies) the end (If I remember correctly) was filmed at Custer and gives you some sense of how it looks. I applaud your mission to see all the National Parks and am curious to know if you intend to make it up to Isle Royale NP at some point. Always interested to know who visits as it is seriously remote.

Thanks for the National Treasure 2 info.  I've seen the movie but don't remember that part.  Yeah, Isle Royale will be one of the more challenging ones given it's relatively hard to get to and limited options to stay on the Island (we're not into camping).  Since we live in Michigan though, it should be doable.

Hey canzior, I'm in NOVA too (for now)! I don't really have plans, hoping to head down to Richmond next month for my birthday (need to get my second shot first). As far as an international trip, I don't think we really have anything planned. It's kind of hard to think about going abroad right now.

House on a lake in New Hampshire for a week.

Quick trip to FL to see parents for first time since last January.

Assorted long weekend road trips to see family and look at colleges for daughter who is a junior.

Drop off older daughter for freshman year at Northeastern.

Should be a busy and fun summer.

We live on Lake Huron, so we usually spend the summers at home enjoying the lake. We usually try to travel during spring break/winter. We just got back from South Carolina, and are planning a trip to Arizona this winter.

Southern AZ in winter is nice and warm but if you’re going up north  it gets quite cold. Very Michigan- like but can be worse for snow due to the higher elevation. So watch the weather if you’re going to the Grand Canyon, dress warm, parts of it are closed for winter and you may not realistically be able to get there.

Michigan in June.
Seattle in July.
Cape Cod in August

First time flying for our soon to be two year old so not sure how that’s gonna go, but happy to be getting back out in the world.

I was fortunate enough to be able to make two big trips in early 2020 prior to covid (Australia and Costa Rica). Now those trips feel like 10 years ago.

Just moved cross country to California for the 3rd time in my life, is that a record? Settled on Santa Barbara this time and enjoying is thus far. So I guess this already feels like a new/fun summer plan.

Got a few wine tasting weekends already in place and would like to set up a trip to Yosemite at some point. Maybe a trip up to Seattle to visit a friend for some fishing as well.

We’re thinking something similar. Keep in mind even with the vaccine, Hawaii big island still requires a negative covid test 72 hours prior to arrival. The vaccine simply allows you to skip the quarantine and post-arrival test. HOWEVER, this only applies to the big island.

Don’t forget that if you think you might travel to any of the other islands, they each have their own restrictions on travel and quarantines.

Disney in JULY.  Yes, I said it.  Disney in July.  Wife's orders.  She doesn't mind sweltering heat but that's when it works for her job.  I assume I'll survive, but maybe not.

I'm in Florida so it's summer most of the year - mowing the lawn year round was an interesting thing coming from the north. Basically I'll probably just go to the beach more often and spend the day in the water now that the gulf is starting to warm up. Nice thing about living in a world-famous vacation destination is most weekends can be made into a vacation if you want; not a bad way to live life if you ask me.

Sort of in flux here.

Son - 2023 UM Grad - is having jaw surgery in early June, so puts things on hold for about a month.

Going to Providence for a wedding in three weeks.

Going to Chicago over Memorial Day weekend.

Probably going to get to NYC to see friends at some point.

Maybe a week up north.

Probably not traveling internationally for a while.  My family of four is vaccinated, but we are a little concerned about getting trapped somewhere if there is some sort of outbreak or if a limitation on travel is instituted while we're out of the country.  Plus, my wife is feeling a bit more anxious than I am about getting back to a "normal" level of activity...and I don't want to push her or make her feel stressed.

My beloved dog will be 11 years old in September.   While I try not to dwell about it too much, I know that we don't have a ton of time left with him.    He loves spending time at our lake getaway in northern Wisconsin, so I'm making every effort to take as many long weekends as possible to let him thrive in the water and outdoors.   A bonus:  I also thrive in that environment.

I also look forward to spending some extended time with my parents in the U.P.  I haven't seen them since January 2020.   They also live on a lake, so my dog will be very happy.

My wife and I are finally going to do a UP road trip we've talked about doing for years it seems in June.  We figured it would be a good year to put aside our normal winter trips to somewhere warm - The plan is to go to the falls, then kayak around Pictured Rocks, go to Mt. Arvon and then finish it by going to Isle Royale for a night.  Praying it all goes well with safe travel and good weather.

I'm just going to Oregon to be trapped at the lake with my In-Laws for a week.  Beyond that its going to be business travel if anything.  Which is fine as I just spent Spring Break on a National Parks tour in Southern Utah and so can't afford to go on anymore vacations.

My family, however, is going all over the place.  Son is going backpacking with my parents and other nephew Out West and then Wrestling Camp(also out West) before coming back to do Boy Scout Camp.  Daughter is going to Hawaii with my parents and other nephew for a week.  Then both kids and my wife are going to Oregon for three weeks with the in-laws.  My son is not super-excited about it, but my wife is starting to anticipate that its the beginning of the end for her parents and so she's trying to spend as much time with them as possible.  End result is I get left to my own devices for two weeks back here in Tennessee with the Dog and a likely long list of Honey-do's before going to Oregon to join them.  I tried to make it shorter but got hit with the, "But this is when we're doing family pictures."  Game Set Match.

Just got word from a breeder we have been communicating with for almost a year that they have a pup for us. Super excited to have a doggo again. So puppy training and traveling up north to the family cottage will be the main parts to our summer. Also hopefully a lot of golf.

I'm taking the kids out to Zion and we're hiking the Narrows.  We're just doing bottom-up this trip although I'd like to make it back and do the full top-down hike at some point.  Also plan to hit Kanab and Escalante for some other hikes.  We've already started collecting gear and doing some practice hikes.

The Narrows is an AWESOME hike and the outfitters have a great and efficient setup, just expect to drop about $50 a person for the rental gear.

Make sure you have your shuttle bus tickets secured to get up there.  If you can get them a couple weeks early that's the best bet, trying to get them the night before can be pretty chancy.

Driving up to Grand Lake, CO with the wife and 6 month old baby this weekend. It's only a couple hours away but it's our first trip since March of last year so we're excited to get out of the house for more than a few hours at a time.

Funny you should ask... We moved to Denver 3 years ago primarily to ski and with the new baby (and Covid) we have gotten zero days in this season. I keep telling myself I'm going to get at least one so this weekend might be my last reasonable chance... Going to pack the planks at the very least and hope the wife lets me get a half day in ?.
