Maybe it's a sign of times in terms of our polarized politics (and possibly an obvious point), but I think that public spats between boards and presidents can't be good any institution. That's likely true for MSU and Stanley, and frankly for Michigan and Schlissel even the underlying facts vary.  Turmoil can't have a positive impact on student and faculty recruitment, donors etc.

My recollection is that Duderstadt and the regents butted heads back in the '90s, and he eventually went back to a faculty role without a lot of public drama.

Both the UM Regents and the MSU Trustees are elected roles.  For voters in MI, it is well worth the time to research and vote for the non-clown candidates (if available).  I don't think it benefits either university or the state to weaponize the governance of two of our most important institutions.

I filled out my absentee ballot last night.  I was tempted to vote for the biggest buffoons on the MSU BOT ballot, but decided the only thing I was disrespekting was myself.

MSU, regardless of the rivalry with Michigan, is an AAU member institution.  Being a member has responsibilities that are far more research and academic pursuit related than anything else.

It seems like the MSU BoT is "out there", and it's impossible to understand what they are focused on.

The culture of what is deemed acceptable conduct by academic staff, athletic staff, or students / student-athletes, is quite inconsistent.

What does their BoT need to figure out?
