OT: Should Detroit Mercy Pay $50,000 for an Extra Game so Antoine Davis Can Set Scoring Record?
I've seen some mention on the board of this story but not an entire thread. It deserves one. Antoine Davis of Detroit Mercy is just three points shy of Pete Maravich's all-time Division 1 scoring record of 3,667 points, which Maravich accomplished in just three seasons and without the three-point line. Davis scored 3,664 points in five seasons.
Davis came up just short when Detroit Mercy lost in its Horizon League tournament game, but now the fleabag CBI tournament is considering extending a bid to UDM, even though it had a losing record this season (14-19). It would cost UDM a $27,500 entry fee to play in the tourney. When you add in travel expenses, it'll be about $50,000.
The only reason UDM would do this is so that Davis could set the record. What say you? I say that if it happens, that record should not just get an asterisk; it should be put in an entirely different book.

he probably wouldve had it already had his scoring average did not decrease YoY every single season.
26.1

From a basketball purist perspective it'd definitely have a feel of backing into the record. Especially given that Davis already got a fluky bonus year due to Covid. It's still an incredible accomplishment to finish 2nd all time, but for a career sub 41% shooter and a guy who averaged almost as many turnovers as assists to get the record? I don't know, just seems like they'd be quite literally buying the record here.
UDM should go for it if they get the opportunity. Even if his all time scoring record falls Pete Maravich still held it for 50+ years which is amazing. It's not like they are going to rip down his statue at LSU and take him out of the basketball hall of fame just because he is no longer the NCAA scoring leader.
If UDM can spare the $50K, why not? It can come from the marketing budget.
As to the asterisk, I mean seriously? It's all made-up stuff anyway.
From a standpoint of exposure, yeah, they should do it.
But from a sporting standpoint, it feels cheap to get the record this way.
It’s worth more than 50k for marketing, UMD isn’t that small of a school, so I’d be shocked if they didn’t. I’m not old enough to really give a shit about the Pistol, so I don’t care.
They should absolutely do it. Do you have any idea how crazy it is that he's averaging like 28 ppg in this day and age? It would be the only game anybody watches of that tournament.
And no asterisk. A season's a season.
Exactly my thoughts.
How are you going to justify an asterisk? It'd be a legit record. It also would have been done in like twice the amount of games so no one thinks it's more impressive than the old record.
I say do it, the program doesn't have much else going for it.
It would be Texas justice to see them pony up the $50,000, then have the kid get the flu and be unable to participate in the game. Money gone and no record. Then we would see the outrage.
They should absolutely do it.
That a college sports program spends any money at all for athletics (beyond simple recreational opportunities for regular students) is for only one thing: Sports glory.
There are college programs that spend millions for that, including one that we are quite familiar with 40 miles to the west.
$50K for the all-time Division 1 scoring record is a bargain.
They should do it. The PR boost and attention the school will get for Davis breaking the record is more than worth the $50K it will cost them.
For the same reason there should be an asterisk by Hank Aaron and Barry Bonds name .There were differences from their time and Babe Ruth's .In Ruth's time the pitchers mound was higher, the ball was softer, the fields were bigger. I don't tjink Aaron and Bonds would have passed Ruth playung with the same conditions.
