OT: Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductees

Submitted by Dunder on April 22nd, 2024 at 9:06 AM

The list for this year includes these four:

  • Dave Matthews Band
  • Foreigner
  • Peter Frampton
  • Kool & The Gang

I submit for discussion and comparison these bands/performers that are not inductees:

America, The B-52s, Blood Sweat and Tears, ELP, Grand Funk Railroad, The Guess Who, Jethro Tull, Kansas, Marshall Tucker Band, Harry Nilsson, REO Speedwagon, Gerry Rafferty, Supertramp, Three Dog Night, Steve Winwood (solo).

I submit all on this non- inductees list belong, at least, ahead of Frampton (and yes, I'm of the age and headspace that adored that Frampton Comes Alive effort).

I abstaining on Marshall Tucker since I don't know enough about what they did in entirety.

They have never gotten their due. Kind of in the shadow of the Allman Brothers. Listen to Ramblin'. Just a great high energy song. Toy Caldwell at his best. It evokes the spirit of an old Robert Johnson blues number of the same name.

I'm old but they were a bit before my time. Nevertheless my mother was super young (20 when she got married) and she listened to everything I would've listened to if I was a teenager then. I still have her Iron Butterfly In a Gadda Vida album. She was into Grand Funk, and I liked them when I was in high school.

The above list (of performers, not "musical influences, which also includes the MC5) is missing A Tribe Called Quest, Ozzy Osborne, Cher, and Mary J. Blige.

Tribe is the only inductee that I'd actively choose to listen to (Midnight Marauders and Low End Theory are perfect albums, IMO) but, obviously, YMMV.

DMB was the #1 grossing touring act in the US for years on end, even after they were a bit past their prime creative output. They're emblematic of a very popular strain of popular music. The RRHOF is clear now that they're pitching a wide tent, so there's no reason why they shouldn't be inducting the best of the alt rock/jam band fusion groups of the 90s.

I could listen to an entire Dave Matthews band and be thoroughly unimpressed and actually probably annoyed.

But live performances of songs like Seek Up, #41, Grey Street, Bartender and some others are totally different animals.

Some of the best performances I have ever seen are by Dave Matthews.  I have also left a show or two because my ears hurt and they sounded like garbage.  In the iconic words of Eddie Murphy in Coming to America, DMB is the epitome of "Good and Terrible."

ew on the first. fine with the rest.

You listed some good ones. Not sure I agree with all, but as always, that's a personal preference.

I will say that this group is... particularly weak. Who is the headliner?

Until Joe Cocker is inducted I have no use for this supposed hall of fame.

BTW, does anyone know how to change their user name here?  I am not a big poster and my name goes back to the Wilton Speight era.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is as relevant as the WWE Hall of Fame.  Fun to talk about, but not going to lose any sleep over it.

I have no problem with anyone that made it in.  The four listed by the OP were Iconic in their time.

I have no problem with any of the left out bands mentioned by the OP.  Kansas and The B-52s in particular stand out as bands that should be there already.

Oasis, Sinead O'Connor, and Jane's Addiction were ROCK STARS that weren't mentioned in the OP.   You can't tell the story of rock and roll without them.

The fact that Chris Cornell is not in the Hall of Fame to some degree is incredible.  Not sure how Soundgarden is not in the Hall of Fame at this stage.

Are there actual, meaningful criteria for admission? Doesn't seem like it.  Seems like they just add whomever they want.  It's pretty dumb.  It doesn't seem like anything anyone should really care about.  We visited the RRHOF once while driving through Cleveland on our way to somewhere else.  It was a mildly fun place to visit once.  I find it very unlikely that I would ever return.

Warren Zevon is a glaring omission (or did I miss him getting in finally? I know Wenner had some personal grudge against him).

REO Speedwagon is not getting in - Ever.

The Guess Who, Supertramp and  Tull probably deserve to be in.

I'm not losing sleep over Grand Funk or Kansas missing out.

I was riding with my grandfather when I was nine and he turned off the car radio. Hot Blooded by Foreigner was playing.  He was a good friend.

Really don't mind if you sit this one out. My word is but a whisper, your deafness a shout. I may make you feel but I can't make you think. Your sperm's in the gutter, your love's in the sink.

So you ride yourself over the fields. And you make all your animal deals. And your wisemen don't know how it feels, to be thick as a brick.

Jethro Tull, from Thick as a Brick.

Ian Anderson is still plugging along singing about Aqualung, playing the Teacher while his band bungles in the rock n roll jungle.

Before there was jumpman, there was Anderson dancing,, wild eyed with bandana, flute in hand, serenading the high notes and gesticulating on stage. Yes, his band's omission from all-time rock n' roll HOF status is a massive oversight.

Jethro Tull and Harry Nilsson not being in blows my mind.

With the way the RRHOF operates frank sinatra, bing crosby and Lawrence welk have better chances than those guys in getting in next year.

Honestly, I'm surprised the four inductees took THIS LONG before they got in.

Went with my then-girlfriend, now wife of 31 years, to see REO at the Midland County Fair August 1990. My hearing never recovered :>) We were so close to the speakers. The synth along on the Keep on Rollin' probably cost me 10 db loss in hearing alone. But what a great night it was!

Supertramp would have probably been in by now if not for the split between the band and Roger Hodgson. Breakfast in America album was a great memory from my 10th grade days (1979).

These are great bands from the 70s and 80s.  Not sure about the choices for this year. Not a big fan of Foreigner or DMB. I loved The Guess Who and Jethro Tull as a teen.  My order:

  1. Jethro Tull
  2. Guess Who
  3. America
  4. Supertramp
  5. B-52
  6. Three Dog Night
  7. Blood Sweat & Tears
  8. Kansas
  9. MTB
  10. REO

Kool & The Gang!!!  They have so many great songs, it's hard to remember them all.

Celebration (my personal choice after any victory over the Buckeyes), Get Down on It, Jungle Boogie, Ladies Night, Too Hot, Summer Madness, Fresh, Steppin' Out, Joanna, Cherish, Fresh, Misled, Hollywood Swinging, Funky Stuff, Love & Understanding, etc.

They are one of the most sampled bands out there.  They still tour.  I am bummed I missed their recent show in Washington state near Olympia.

Now that KISS is in, you might as well induct Dundee’s entire list. They’re all more talented, important & influential than KISS. And I have nothing against KISS. My point is the bar has been lowered. Let them all in.

And Paul Revere and the Raiders!! Hungry for that good thing, baby!

(Unless they’re already in. Lol.) I agree about Wenner. Total DB.

Strongly disagree agree with you, OP---Peter Frampton being inducted into the HOF yesterday was long overdue.  Frampton has long been one of my favorite guitarists due to his somewhat unique jazz-influenced playing style but he's also very capable when playing the blues too.  I just saw Frampton for the 5th time (first couple times were at Wings Stadium in K-zoo, back in the "Frampton Comes Alive!" days) about a month ago in Gary at the Hard Rock Cafe, also saw him at Meijer Gardens last summer. He's lost nearly all his hair and has a degenerative muscle disease that prevents him from standing up while performing, but he's lost nothing as an entertainer, singer, and guitarist.

Matter of fact, his old band Humble Pie should also be in the HOF, Steve Marriott and company have long been overlooked by the hall.

I agree with most of the others you listed except for probably Gerry Rafferty and REO Speedwagon.  Of that list, Tull, Winwood, ELP, Guess Who, and Grand Funk should be slam-dunks.
