OT: Rob Parker and Three Ex-Athletes Launching All-Black Sports Talk Radio Station in Detroit

The story in the Detroit News is paywalled, but here's the relevant part:

Former Detroit sports columnist Rob Parker and three business partners, all former athletes, have reached an agreement to lease WXYT 1270-AM from Audacy and launch the nation's first all-Black lineup of hosts. "Sports Rap Radio" is scheduled to launch in mid-May, and eventually will feature local programming from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., with Parker's nationally syndicated show, "The Odd Couple" with Chris Broussard, airing from 7-10 p.m.

One of his partners is former U-M wide receiver Maurice Ways.

haile selassie: On the question of racial discrimination, the Addis Ababa Conference taught, to those who will learn, this further lesson:

that until the philosophy which holds one race superior and another inferior is finally and permanently discredited and abandoned;

that until there are no longer first class and second class citizens of any nation;

that until the color of a man's skin is of no more significance than the color of his eyes;

that until the basic human rights are equally guaranteed to all without regard to race;

that until that day, the dream of lasting peace and world citizenship and the rule of international morality will remain but a fleeting illusion, to be pursued but never attained.

Had completely forgotten about Maurice Ways. Seems like a lifetime ago. Hopefully Braylon is not one of the hosts. Wouldn't mind having a better local radio option in several time slots.

I think my favorite Twitter meme of all time was when there were rumbling toward the end of the year of Maurice Ways transferring at the end of the season. There was a clip of him putting very little effort at the end of a deep ball thrown his way and a Twitter poster shared that clip and said “looks like Mo Ways just grad transferred halfway through his route”.

I’m trying to make the point that radio stations that exclusively employ and are aimed at certain groups already exist. Yet these people grumbling only seem to get upset when it’s a black radio station. They aren’t mad about Christian radio stations. And I think they should ask themselves why they are fine with a radio station aimed at one group of people but not another.
