OT: Rob Parker and Three Ex-Athletes Launching All-Black Sports Talk Radio Station in Detroit

The story in the Detroit News is paywalled, but here's the relevant part:

Former Detroit sports columnist Rob Parker and three business partners, all former athletes, have reached an agreement to lease WXYT 1270-AM from Audacy and launch the nation's first all-Black lineup of hosts. "Sports Rap Radio" is scheduled to launch in mid-May, and eventually will feature local programming from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., with Parker's nationally syndicated show, "The Odd Couple" with Chris Broussard, airing from 7-10 p.m.

One of his partners is former U-M wide receiver Maurice Ways.

I follow her career fairly closely, and as such, I'll deviate from your comment a bit and very disrespectfully disagree with that dude. In my experience, the Venn diagram of people who say Jemele a racist and people who feel like January 6th was a righteous day has 100% overlap.

These folks also don't understand why rappers can say it but they can't.

It’s pretty clear she doesn’t like white or Asian people Also January 6th was a dumb.  She’s a provocateur of racial division something I find abhorrent personally. I don’t agree with her perspective and don’t think she’s particularly talented which is why she began her schtick Her career is on the Rob Parker track as a result and that’s fine.

I live in the New Trier high school district in Chicago, which is a very good school district and very competitive. As you would expect, these Asian families (a few are first generation) are trying their hardest to get their kids into the best schools. They have been very vocal about some of the efforts to make it harder for Asians to get into top notch schools. Jemele is one of several people who have apparently expressed some anti-Asian sentiments around this topic. I mean I just looked up and she basically equated asians as white supremacists for combating this. Ugh! Horrible take IMO.

I’ll just say the Asian families in my area really stick together. Meaning I wouldn’t be surprised that every single Asian family at New Trier knows each other very well and work together to “fight the system” whether that is real or perceived.

It's pretty hilarious that Parker's current employer (Deadspin, or more accurately, "shell of Deadspin") STILL has this article up from 15 years ago totally trashing him* (when Deadspin actually WAS Deadspin):

* Trashing liar & scab Mitch Albom too.  Bonus points for that.

I love this idea in theory, especially as a Black man. I could see the station being a springboard for some future media superstars. But why invest all these resources in legacy media? That seems a little out of step with the way most fans consume sports content.

Regarding the investment in legacy media, it does not escape notice that they are doing this on AM 1270, which is the sister station of 97.1 FM, which Audacy also owns. They also have their studios and personnel in the same building (and there are a few crossovers, I think), so the monetary and physical investment is probably quite minimal aside from the new on-air talent.
